Flood Already Released On Delta Halo - Halo 2

Title for Reference. So I was talking with a fellow member about the whole Flood conflict, both with Ancient Humanity and the Forerunners and how the Flood/Precursors returning to the Galaxy may be the ancient evil promoted for the Reclaimer Trilogy. Anyways, the convo eventually lead to the Flood on the Halo's and to the Flood that were already released and fighting the Sentinels within the Sentinel Wall. I think I heard something about this being explained or hinted towards somewhere, but I can't remember. Does anyone know how exactly the Flood were already fighting the Sentinels on Delta Halo? Where did the mass come from to sustain them on the ring? Thanks. Discuss. [Edited on 10.02.2012 5:29 PM PDT]

They came to the galaxy 110.000 years ago and fought Ancient Humanity, from which they were pushed back out of the galaxy, and later they returned against the Forerunners 100.000 years ago, from which both sides lost the war. The Flood essentially left the galaxy after the firing of the Halo array since there would be no biomass left to support them. Others were captured and put into study in the Halo Installations. Which is the Flood we all know and love. The Primordial promised the Flood would return and test Humanity in the future, and that time has yet to come, as the only Flood outbreaks we have seen have been from the specimens on the Halo installations.

 •
Posted by: MickelPickel All we really know is that 2401 Penitent Tangent, Installation 05's monitor, made some error in containment protocols which allowed for Flood biomass to accumulate and begin to spread, an error that was reported to him and ignored. Either he was compromised by the outbreak, or he went rampant and did nothing to fix it. Either way, there was a Flood outbreak on Installation 05.
Which is why I named my profile after him. Flood breaks out, and he doesn't give 2 -blam!-s.

And the Didact, or any of the other Forerunners, fits the descriptors they've given it, which was, new, as in something the fans had never seen before (which does not fit the Didact), plus the way Frankie described the Didact in a semi-recent interview: "His persona is kind of a mixed bag. He's a heroic figure, he's a noble figure in history, and in some ways feels like a good guy - but he's much more complicated than that." Is not at al how you'd describe a pure, true villain or someone who's supposed to be an Ancient Evil. The Didact can easily and very well be an antagonist or play an antagonistic role in Halo 4 with little to no problem(s)....but he's not the Ancient Evil.

 • I always like thinking that there was just a large amount of Infection forms from 2401's inability to fully quarantine the Flood, and that the Covies and Humans sent a force that was not expecting a Flood force of that mass and simply got assimilated. You gotta remember that that the Humans already got a small force past the wall in the first place, which is why they were in front of Thel anyway, and that after the shield went down, both the Humans and the Covenant could've easily sent for some heavy ordinance without being aware of the gigantic Flood force awaiting them. And BOTH of them really wanted the Index. We saw a lot of heavy ordinance such as tanks and rockets being assimilated and used by the Flood in Quarantine Zone. Aside from reports from Regret during the catastrophe in attempting to get that Forerunner fleet in Halo Wars and the great Battle of Installation 04, there was pretty scarce intel on the Flood. I doubt any side knew what was gonna happen or was properly prepared to combat it.

 •
Posted by: the real Janaka
Posted by: HipiO7 Alright, that we know. But how did the outbreak occur?
How the outbreak within the Sentinel Wall occured I do not know, haven't found any clues on that whatsoever, but what if the Gravemind is the same Gravemind that spoke to MB, the one present during the war, he might not have started out on Installation 05. To quote Cortana:
"This lake couldn't have been created by volcanic action, which means it was either built this way on purpose, or was created by some other cataclysmic event. Sorry... were you trying to kill something?"
And what do we find beneath the lake? But then they covered it up; rebuildt structures here and there:
"You know, I think the Forerunners built these new structures around the old, to protect them, to honor them. Pure speculation, mind you. I'd need to make a thorough survey to be sure."
Did the captured 2401 order the sentinls to rebuild? (The Graveming is after all able to teleport John and Thel to various destinations on the ring, something I doubt he would have been able to do before he somehow got a hold of 2401, so he does have some kind of control). Pure speculation, mind you...
Although I really like your theory, the Gravemind was not found under the lake. His tendrils seem to reach across the majority of Halo, as it did in High Charity. In the level High Charity you can see his tendrils all over the places, plus in the scene where he speaks with Thel and John, it has a metal sort of surrounding which would mean he is effectively underneath The Library or some other part of Delta Halo. Although 2401 may have gone rampant, in the cutscene he seems sane enough to notice the outbreak, a reclaimer and the urgency to put the containment protocol in effect.

 • The first time you see the conflict is when the Arbiter lands on Delta to retrieve the Sacred Icon. As you play through the level, you see several dead Covenant and Humans along the way. Adding to the fact that 2401 seemed to be going, or was rampant, might have meant that he had released the quarantined flood specimens which would have infected the invaded armies, causing the destruction of the "Zone" which they where housed.

 • In one of the CEA terminals, it mentions that 343 Guilty Spark lost contact with the other monitors. The only one that he did manage to keep contact with for a short time was 2401. And he mentioned that his responses were strange. He was already going rampant early on, maybe 3000 years post-halo activation. Also, the mid-end chapter title in Sacred Icon is The 100,000 year war. It seems the flood was loose for a while. [Edited on 10.04.2012 2:22 PM PDT]

 • Yeah the details on this subject are crap. The Monitor probably went rampant or made some miscalculations that led to the flood outbreak. There is no actual explanation are far as I know. [Edited on 10.03.2012 4:50 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: CrabbySpider I think I read somewhere (maybe halopedia), that the Gravemind had been lying dormant beneath the surface of Delta for thousands of years. If I remember correctly then the first time the MC encounters the Flood on Delta is after Regret is taken out. MC is captured by the Gravemind and taken to a cavernous lair. Let me see if I can find it somewhere. EDIT: Yeah here it is.
Through neglect shown by the Monitor of Installation 05, 2401 Penitent Tangent, a Flood outbreak occurred, and the Gravemind was able to find enough biomass to rebuild itself deep under the Library of the installation. It assimilated the dead Prophet of Regret into itself and also captured the Monitor.

Alright, that we know. But how did the outbreak occur?
Posted by: Darthbill99 There is indigenous life on Halo, it probably lived off the animals preserved there until the humans and covies got there. I think a better question is how they assimilated so many people quick enough to give you those first few flood fights on the sacred icon. I mean you literally opened the gate to the quarantine zone seconds before you get flooded (no pun intended) by dozens of combat forms from both species.
But the Flood were only on the inside of the Sentinel Wall. They escape when you deactivate the barriers to gain access to the Library. The whole inside was a frozen wasteland, I highly doubt there was any indigenous life in there. [Edited on 10.02.2012 8:27 PM PDT]

 • It wouldn't make sense for it to be the Flood at all. The tag line for Halo 4 specifically has been "An ancient evil awakens" while it's been confirmed that the Flood won't be in Halo 4. (Well, you know, except for the multiplayer gametype.) As for how they were let free on Delta Halo, I have no idea. I never even thought about that before. [Edited on 10.02.2012 7:45 PM PDT]
