Is it worth it to get Halo 2 for PC right now? Compatability/pop#?

Hello there, I have recently been interested in getting Halo 2 for PC, but I wanted to research it first before I make a dumb mistake. I have been playing Halo for most of its 10(almost 11) years now but mainly on the Xbox. I am looking at this version on Amazon:: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000NV8F58?qid=1344778771&sr=8-2&vs=1 But it has some very mixed reviews.. I have a 64 bit Windows7 desktop that I built myself:: i5 2500K Nvidia EVGA GTX 560(non Ti) 8 GB Crucial RAM at 1600Mhz (main needed specs) So my question is mainly, is it still worth it to get Halo2 for PC? I wouldn't be playing much multiplayer, but I want to link it with my Gamertag(gold mem) and have it play well and stay connected online.. I have seen some people lately saying that because of an update for GFWL, it doesn't easily accept the older games' validation codes anymore. Is this an actual problem and means that I shouldnt get H2 for PC(Im using Win 7) because it's hard to remedy this(or any other hiccups)?? Or do you think I should go ahead and get it? I do wish to play some Halo 2 again, online and campaign.. What do you think?

 • Hmm, upon deeper inspection, it may be something completely different. This is actually really interesting and I'm trying to figure out how they did this. Whoever made a proxy dll and did this is incredibly ingenious, still not sure how they managed to fake the game type ID. I haven't finished disecting the struct and probably won't seeing as I'm busy and it isn't relevant to much after I know what it is, but there are a few IDs microsoft uses when activating a game, and somehow they found the universal ID, which I'm going to assume was a help/support feature that is activated when you call in for a key and it gives you the code over the phone. Idk really how to describe it without just posting the pdb. Well, I guess I was wrong. This is really advanced -blam!- though, I'm surprised. Must have taken a lot of effort, sadly the game didn't get popularity. It's not a crack in the conventional sense, it's simply a flaw in Microsoft's activation process. They have a... backdoor?... for most likely product support.

 • I got the same interpretation Bt did. He's easily one of the most intelligent posters on this forum and I'm sure most here would agree. It's a problem with your wording, not a problem with his understanding of the English language. My point was that you need a cracked form of the game for it to work. From your original reply to me, it seems as though you were insinuating that it didn't require a crack when it actually does. For what reasons it needs a crack is beside the point. However, from what I've been told, the game doesn't accept the keys given to you from codehpro without this MF.dll file that you keep going on about. So therefore yes, you have to do something to the game's files to allow those keys to work. Instead of giving an over complicated answer, I'd like a simple "Yes" or "No" to whether or not you need it for the game to accept the keys. [Edited on 08.30.2012 10:52 AM PDT]

 • The wording of your comment left it open to interpretation and no, the exports are not relevant. We don't need to know about them to know that what you're doing is not as above board as you claim. You purchased (supposedly) serials for the cheapest GFWL game you could find and now you distribute them along with a crack for the game to allow for limitless use. Nothing more needs to be said on how it's done. No amount of bizarre logic is going to be able to legitimise your actions. [Edited on 08.30.2012 10:29 AM PDT]

I said even if you managed to crack your h2v client, you can't connect to the needed servers to sign in and play the game. Please l2engrish. Also, please visit msdn and look up said exports. It is completely relevant. [Edited on 08.30.2012 1:02 AM PDT]

 • Even after like 20 topics you still don't understand server sided activation :| How it works: h2vregistration encrypts the key somehow (probably a combination of their base 24 then character shift from halo pc and md5) and sends the hash to microsoft's servers. The key is then encrypted and then sent again with a salt sent from microsoft's servers based on the first one. If the two keys match, microsoft generates a (let's call it) keyhash based on the key you sent and their own algorithm, and stores that key's number of uses/activation in their own database. The keyhash is then encrypted and stored in token.bin. Each time you attempt to sign into live or join a server, your keyhash is decrypted then sent to microsoft where it is compared against some encrypted form of your key or the other way around, and if it is valid you are allowed to sign into live/the server. If it is invalid, your connection is rejected and you're forever alone. Without a cracked server and live master server replacement, it's impossible to get online even if you did have a cracked h2v. Which brings me to another point. I decided to run dllexp on MF.dll to find out what's in it (the "cracked" one) and here's what I've found:
MFCreateAudioRendererActivate 0x10001599 0x00001599 1 (0x1) MF.dll MFCreateSourceResolver 0x1000159f 0x0000159f 3 (0x3) MF.dll MFCreateTopology 0x10001595 0x00001595 4 (0x4) MF.dll MFCreateTopologyNode 0x1000159d 0x0000159d 5 (0x5) MF.dll MFCreateVideoRendererActivate 0x1000159b 0x0000159b 6 (0x6) MF.dll MFGetService 0x100015a1 0x000015a1 7 (0x7) MF.dll
To make that a little clearer, the first column is the undecorated export name, the second is the expected address when loaded in memory, the third is the offset from MF.dll's base address, and the last is the ordinal number (export number) So now let's remember that Media Foundations is intended as a replacement for DirectShow, a graphics pipeline. Now let's go look up some of those functions on MSDN. Here's the main page of the SDK. And lol, just dissassembling it and found some interesting stuff. Brb.

 • There are many different definitions for piracy. It's in hot debate right now. Throwing around definitions from various sources would be nonsense seeing as though no one can agree with what it really means. Also, the version of Halo 2 Vista you get from there is cracked. You have to crack it for it to accept the keys. My point is this isn't legitimate. I just dislike the fact you guys are trying to make it seem like it is. Whether doing it in the first place is ethical or not is a completely separate discussion.

Thanks for enlightening me, friendo. You do realize that is exactly the same thing you're doing with H2V, right? Final question: Are you guys genuinely ignorant to the true meaning of piracy or are you the drug dealer that claims it won't hurt to try [insert hard drug here] once? (Being absolutely serious with the question. If you don't feel like answering it publicly then send a PM.)
Someone needs to learn the difference between filesharing and piracy. While each may be illegal in their own way, they are completely different. Piracy: selling stolen or cracked content Filesharing: ...sharing files, be it stolen/cracked/legit/whatever. p2p falls under here. I see general media has gotten to you. Also, please tell me where I said it was only piracy if it involves cracks. You can have filesharing of cracked files. I crack things and share them... umad bro? It's not piracy unless I'm selling it. Maybe you should refresh your definitions on some of the differences between piracy and filesharing. You seem way too eager to throw around that term. FYI: the only illegitimate part about it is the h2v ISO download. The mf.dll is loaded by h2registration/h2v on startup, and the keys are not keygenned (microshaft products are individually activated...) [Edited on 08.26.2012 10:13 PM PDT]

But, honestly, I think over the years we've talked about Halo 1 and 2 PC to death. We've contributed our fair share to Bungie and this forum. There's hardly anything to talk about now.

Pirating involves selling cracked products/warez. Nothing of which Kant or Codeh has done.

 • Get it on Xbox, there's a higher playercount on Kai and XBC, plus the community isn't as much of a joke as it is on PC. Or get Halo PC, far better.

I've got Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and i've had no issues with the game but OEM I have no idea. Sorry.

 • If you'd rather not wait for summer to end, then it's a great way to play a game without your room from heating up (with M$ consoles, an average gaming room can become a furnace within 30 minutes unless you have really good ventilation). I hate H2 Vista but I prefer it to the Xbox version due to the absence of major heat output. Why just yesterday, I was able to update one of my collections substantially... • Your PC in theory should run it no problem. HOWEVER, Halo 2 Vista can be a hit and miss with people, varying from not wanting to run (usually fixed by updating the GFWL client separately) or choppy performance. So here's some things you should know before considering purchasing Halo 2 Vista and hopefully this will answer your questions too. 1) The validation codes you are referring to is actually the CD key install limit. Halo 2 Vista can only be installed 5 times before you need a new CD key. DO NOT buy a used copy, you do so at your own risk. 2) Multiplayer player count hovers around 30-75 at any one time. You will not get the same experience as Halo 2 Xbox matchmaking and there is no rank system (although there is a mod that enables it for some servers etc). Furthermore, the 360 controller is superior to the M+K in multiplayer due to the ridiculous aim assist and mouse lag over 60fps. There is also a Co-op mod which allows you to play most of the Arbiter levels in co-op with up to 16 players although it can be a little buggy. Take note of these if you want to play any form of MP. 3) The game comes with the usual perks from being on PC, higher resolutions and looks sharper, AA etc. GFWL achievements will link to your XBL Gamertag and so on. To conclude, it really depends on how much you want to play Halo 2. I've listed some things for you to consider and tried to balance pro's and cons but the decision is yours.
