Halo 2: The game it should have been (beta).

So I was bored one day, looking up stuff about Halo 2 and the e3 trailer, and suddenly I found a lot of stuff about halo 2 before it came out: First off, here is the e3 trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb9o-Ce_hYM All the h2x fanboys have seen this already. You know, what could have been blah blah. Now, for something you didn't expect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LMZgz_fVYs&feature=fvw Check it out: MLG dudes playing a Halo 2 Beta. Notice the Halo 1 HUD, proof the game was based off the Halo 1 engine. This isn't unusual in game development, did you know that Black Ops is really based off ID tech 3? Another public announcement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHrpjRnvl10&feature=related Later on, there is a XBL beta running on The XBL test network AKA Parternet (as it is called on the 360). Bungie has this offical interview from gamespot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B31J7GkvOvw&feature=related EDIT: Turns out, it was a pressed disc given to reviewers, and most ms employees. It worked on normal unmodded xboxes, and was the beta in the other videos below. Of course, there were other betas on Partnernet, but the most common beta (and the one floating around) is the Private beta. And another bungie interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9XMqg4W9-o&feature=related Note the halo 1 HUD again and another type of HUD, you will see that in the next video. While looking for other videos of halo 2, I found these videos too. I thought they were fake at first, but now comparing these with the other videos, these are real. First off, here is the full main menu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SAX6tuQofU&feature=related Note the Xbox 1 dash style ZOOM effect, and placeholders for scrapped features. The mongoose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV3_p6PIFNQ&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhGsIBZ0KWk&feature=related The second one has offical narration on why it was removed. Now for more beta menu goodness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ug1ZnyY2EA&feature=related And now for some scrapped crap in another version: Single Shot BR with Different Rocket Launcher: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8Vzn0WLUdA&feature=related Another one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atCsy1nVbb8&feature=related Ghost getting killed by a weird flamethrower: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sSVh0bPq2c&NR=1 And now for one last thing: Semi Destructable Enviroments: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx9MSyX6Tr8&NR=1 That's all I could find. EDIT: One more thing: This is a very prototype falcon, the model isn't even finished: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAgh0FHnPOo&NR=1 1-29-10 edit: New video of a hacked up beta. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C5zzPO9y-4 Wonder why he didn't enable system link. And private servers might be possible, but only 2 or 3 people really give a crap about it. Beta Zanzi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yen1xkXMBfg Beta Waterworks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpusDCjIn6o Beta Midship http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30Uik2nJlYQ Info about the beta in the youtube videos: http://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index.php?title=Halo_2:Closed_multiplayer_beta EDIT: 2-4-11 More beta footage found on gametrailers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxUvM-VRZ5c LameCheat also has the beta...and being the elitest he is, he is not releasing it. Heres a video of the main menu though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUlI4o-ckpM Unlike the other person, he can't fake the connection. LOL! EDIT: 8/18/11 Found more vids. Some moongoose footage and alt weapon sounds. Some glitches in viewmodels An early attempt at cracking the beta for the above vids EDIT: 10-20-11 Apparently it's been cracked and dug into, something tells me it got leakedz too.... 2-6-12 UPDATE: Oh yay, more footage: The moongoose, useless because it lacks the passenger seat A demo of Shared.Map The full main menu. Hidden options, headhunter + invasion, plus it's limited. 4/12/12 Hey look, more footage of that beta. Now with more debug info and more weapon demos. :3 5/18/12 An interview with bungie. It also explains why the E3 demo was canned. [Edited on 05.18.2012 11:56 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: General Heed Actually, we were talking about hardware mods. Not actual game mods. We were comparing softmods to actually modding the hardware of an Xbox. He mentioned doing the same to a PC and what I meant to say is that upgrading the parts in a PC is not considered modding. I assumed when he said modding on a PC he meant "hardware mods" since that was the whole discussion before.
AH! Okay. Thanks for the clarification. xD

 •
Posted by: Dr Syx
Posted by: General Heed Lol modding a PC isn't really modding. It's not like you have to unlock your PC to be able to run custom programs.
W... Wha... What... I... I don't even... Just... I shouldn't even touch this... I shouldn't even have to explain why this is terrible logic... Modding isn't just modifying a system to accept mods. Modding is creating mods. It's modifying a game. Saying you can't really create "mods" on PC games because you don't have to "unlock your PC" to do it... it's wrong. The use of the term "mods" in gaming most likely (Going to say most likely when I know it was. Just being careful) came from PC gaming. Saying it's not really modding on the platform is just... well... idiotic. Sorry to be that blunt about it but it is. •
Posted by:JacobGRocks Original Xboxes aren't rare at all, they have a ton of them and games at every used game store I go to
Just to clarify to the people who think GameStop (or GAME in the UK) are the only gaming stores to exist, he's not talking about those. He's talking about actual used game stores that don't just stock things within this generation of systems...

I'm sorry, even though modding came from the PC, and even though you can mod PC games, it's not modding. I fail to see the logic there. Please, take this guy's advice and get off the internet.
My original xbox is very precious to me as well and it's also rare now, but playing the betas really does interest me a lot. I've seen xbox mods where people upgraded the CPU to a faster one and added more RAM to the Xbox. I've thought about modding my Xbox before, but there's always a risk and I don't want to ruin my xbox, even though most of the games I have for it will work on my Xbox 360. I'm still on the fence about doing anything to my original xbox. I've messed up jailbreaks on my iPod Touch before, but that's easy to reset. An Xbox is a lot more complicated. I think custom maps in Halo 2 PC will be sufficient for my mods interests lol.
Original Xboxes aren't rare at all, they have a ton of them and games at every used game store I go to, plus if you softmod you can load original XBL dlc. Also, if you bork a softmod on an Xbox 1, you can recover easily if you back up as all files are on the HDD.

Its happened at least twice before, and now there are less and less of them than before.
Lol modding a PC isn't really modding. And anyone can use game saves to change stuff on an Xbox. In fact, the only thing modified is the gamesave in itself, it would hardly be considered modding. Theres also a difference between downloading something and changing the code and scripts yourself.

 •
Posted by: halomaster10144 It still annoys me that Bungie removed the single-shot BR.
The Single shot BR has a fast ROF and low damage compared to the 3 shot burst but has about the same time to kill. All it does is save ammo if need be, but at least with the 3 shot burst you know it takes 4 shots etc.

 • It really isn't difficult to softmod an Xbox, I was able to do it years ago with no issues whatsoever. It's a simple matter of AR, load a save game, click on backup Xbox dashboard, install modded dashboard, job done. Honestly, people make it out to be harder than it really is but it is fair enough because the risk is there if you forget to backup the original dashboard. Otherwise...I stand by my statement. As for the Beta, it is good, it's very similar to Halo 2's final MP build with a couple of noticeable differences (weapon handling, hud, vehicles, cut extra's and a secret on waterworks which may surprise you all...) All will be revealed soon when I get round to uploading the comparison between the two.

 •
Posted by: Dark Hunter21 Indeed, it is easy to get the Beta (well, hexing in the weapons might be difficult if you don't know how, but still). Whats hard is modding an Xbox or finding an Xbox pre-modded specifically for it. I always dreamed Bungie would open their front door one day, and say "Free copies of the Halo 2 Beta for all the good little fanboys and fangirls." Really, what do they really need it for now anyways?Lol...
Actually, modding the Xbox is surprisingly easy. Softmodding anyway, mod chips are another story. I will be uploading a full detailed commentary and comparison of the Halo 2 Beta compared to the final build shortly, within the next 2 weeks at least which should hopefully shed some light on the differences etc.
