I think an important thing to remember (you never mentioned it but I feel it should be addressed) is that price isn't a sound indicator of value.
To keep with your comparison to coffee, you can pay upwards of $600 a pound for Kopi luwak but I've read reviews by coffee connoisseurs stating they'd rather have freeze-dried Taster's Choice than to drink the overpriced swill.
I think an important thing to remember (you never mentioned it but I feel it should be addressed) is that price isn't a sound indicator of value.
It's true! Especially subjectively speaking. My first pair of "nice" headphones were Samson 850s, they cost all of $30 and they were such an upgrade over whatever I was using before (I can't even remember now) that I never looked back, and they still work just fine. One of the things I enjoy about audio stuff is that, once you find your end game, they last quite a while. Some folks are still rocking the Sennheiser HD600s they bought in the 1990s, my soundcard has outlasted two GPUs and one television set. But like you say, stuff doesn't have to cost a ton. A cheap coffee grinder and good beans will still taste better than 90% of the prepackaged stuff; it's fine to buy top of the line, but these days there's not that much need, as long as you know what you're doing. Kopi luwak is the stuff that's been predigested by jaguars or whatever, right? Never saw the appeal of that, I think I'd rather stick to Folgers and 8 O'Clock. (Not to undermine my point, but imagine being such a coffee snob you willingly drink pooped out coffee.)

That's the stuff! Although the berries were digested by the civet cat (technically not a real cat) and there's also Black Ivory coffee that's been digested by elephants, which I think might be even more expensive. 🤢🤮 From what I read, the price is more due to the novelty of it all than the actual flavor. However, I believe animal rights organizations are trying to press these companies on account of the horrible treatment of animals. For the civet coffee, the animals are supposedly force-fed the berries; think of what goose-liver pate companies are being prosecuted for, only with coffee berries. But back to your post and the real topic, I was gifted a Sony Pulse 3D Wireless headset by a remarkably generous individual and to be honest, I don't know that I could game without a 3D headset now; the way I can hear the direction where sounds are coming from has completely spoiled me. 😞
