PS4 controls + D2's "look assistance" = almost unplayable
I don't know how it is on other consoles, but on PS4, there's an absurd feature that's so far beyond "aim assist" that it's actually confusing. It really took me awhile to understand what the hell was going on.
What's going on is that even when I'm not aiming or shooting, and regardless of what I'm doing with the control sticks, if the game decides something interesting passes into my view, it locks on to that. The game also frequently ignores directional input on sword and melee attacks when enemies are nearby.
It's actually shocking to me how this poorly considered feature was ever introduced, and how it could still exist. It's not helpful; it's just like the game is constantly fighting my ability to control my guardian.
Here are some examples:
- Grenades and area of effect weapons are often impossible to aim strategically between enemies, because the game always locks in the aim on whatever it decides the target is. It's especially messed up when an enemy goes into cover and the game decides that it would be helpful to drag my aim after them, causing my AoE attack to smash harmlessly into a wall or some other object.
- Enemies are constantly walking around, crouching, etc. Trying to aim a sniper rifle for a headshot is often nearly impossible: what I'd want to do is aim at a spot where their head is about to be, and that's exactly what the game prevents me from doing. Inevitably, the game tries to keep the aim on the enemy, who then magically moves at the last instant.
- Since I can't keep my aim on my intended target, if several enemies are moving and weaving around in front of me, I rarely get to kill any of them. My aim is being dragged around so badly, the end result is often that the enemies kill me without me killing even one of them.
- Even constructs sometimes (often?) seem to cause my character to "lock on." It's easy to see this, for example, with the hive crystals in the Tomb of Elders encounter. If I happen to look up at one of them, it's a struggle to get my guardian to look away.
- When I try to use a powered melee, or a sword attack, my character often spins (possibly 180 degrees) in some other direction before doing the attack. This happens even when I'm pushing forward on the control stick. I don't know how many times I've been trying to do a melee or sword attack on an enemy in front of me and instead killed myself because the game decided what I really should be doing is attacking an exploding thrall behind me that I didn't even know was there.
And so on. It takes a really wonderful game -- albeit with many other problems, but which I otherwise generally love playing -- and really just makes it a frustrating slog, where I find myself spending considerable effort playing around the problems it causes.
Do other consoles have this "feature"? I'm fairly certain the PC version does not.
Please: fix this issue by letting those of us still stuck on PS4 to turn off this intrusive and annoying feature.
