Yeah, as far as big AAA titles go, we're seeing very little innovation, and stuff is usually as good or worse than what came before. The upside, is that instead of competing through creative ideas, devs are trying to out-muscle each other, making their games larger and larger to satisfy player expectation. In this enironment, the name of the game is waiting. Companies know that most of the revenue is going to come from day 1 releases, so they try to put their games oyt as fast as possible, in order to drain wallets before competitors get to them. This sucks because games constantly release broken, but all those brainlets who buy games on day 1 are going to pressure the devs to fix the game they paid for. So, wait a few years, (the price will probably drop as the market will become saturated with more games), and the devs will eventually fix the game and probably add DLC. Today, the choices are buy a $60 unfinished broken game on release or buy a $40 functional game with dlc much later. Imo, not a tough decision. I think that if players start waiting, companies are going to notice day 1 revenue drop, and start making functional games again with full content on release. I will also say that ganes are now more accessible than ever. They're cheaper due to inflation, and a lot of the big boy mutliplayer shooters: Splitgate, Halo, Fortnite, Apex, Density are going f2p. In the past, if you wanted to play all these games, it'd come with a $300 price tag, but today, it's free. Sure, the quality isn't as great for most, but come on, you really can't beat free, and one of these is bound to be decent at least. If you want more innovation, just migrate to indie titles. I'm not sure how the ganes industry is the worst it's ever been when Holow Knight, Celeste, Sundred, Dead Cells, Cuphead, and Ori Will o the Wisps all release within 3 years of each other not that long ago. These are big boi platformers; quality titles with wildly different structures and ideas that they alnost can't be compared.

  • Yeah that seem to be the verdict. To move to indie games. They seem to care the most.

  • I think indie games, no matter what era we're in, will always be more polished and more creative than AAA titles. They don't have the pressures of deadlines or shareholders or the almighty dollar; their process is driven almost entirely from passion for gamemaking. They're also smaller teams, which means ideas aren't going through as many filters, so that creativity shines through. The drawback is that they can only do so much, even with expansive games like Hollow Knight or Undertale, i don't think they'll be able to make anything revolutionary like AAA studio can. For AAA singleplayers, i think there's a good amout of hope in exclusives. Mario Zelda, and most of Nintendo's other big exclusives are still incredible (except maybe pokemon, idk about pokemon), and Sony's really been pushing the cinematic experience, with Spider-Man and HZD and the Last of Us and Uncharted, not to mention theur Fromsoft exclusives, like Bloodborne and Demon's Souls. Microsoft has one shot to turn things around exclusivewise, with the acquisition of Bethesda and Activision, but, if they -blam!- this up, an xbox is going to turn into a cheap pc with less features. I think most of your grief is coming from AAA multiplayers, which you do have a great point in. The seasonal model of giving small, periodic updates is booming right now. What this type of model does is extend a game's lifespan a ton because players are incentivized every few months to come back and check out what's new. While this sounds pretty great, it also means that devs fan't really spend many more time and resources developing sequels or new ip's when they're so focused on perpetuating one hit.
