I don't believe in ghosts old

Well... I really can't see how's Sony going to get its investment back. However, it explains why Destiny was removed from Gamepass. But even in this, Bungie is erratic: 2000 - Bungie was acquired by Microsoft. 2007 - Bungie left Microsoft to be independent. 2010 - Bungie joined Activision. 2019 - Bungie leaves Activision to be independent. 2022 - Bungie joins Sony. ..... Anyone wanna bet when they'll leave Sony to celebrate their independence as a studio... for the 3rd time? EDIT: as others have pointed out, Bungie was purchased so there's no leaving Sony option. I was misled by Pete Parson's announcement. I thought that it was an Activision-like deal. My bad.

  • They get a cut now from what Bungie publishes. Its more about Profits now. And on note of your edit, Bungie could leave. They were owned by Microsoft and broke away in 2007. Honestly, I think is more to do with the media outside the game. After Final Shape, there could be exclusives but time will tell.

  • In regard to your edit, there is a leaving Sony option it's just a taller legal order especially if they get to maintain their independence. To actually get all that in a contractual agreement means Sony really bent over backwards for them and likely has significant leverage. That said pre Halo release they were purchased by Microsoft, the hands-on approach MS took with Bungie rubbed the studio staff the wrong way which is why they eventually renegotiated their contract and left to become independent, the cost of that deal was Microsoft retaining the rights to the Halo property which they have since all but completely ruined depending on who you talk to.

  • Normally happens when there is high turnover coupled with poor management.

  • You can't just leave after being purchased.

Yeah, that's true, I was misled by Pete Parson's announcement. I thought that it was something like the Activision deal. My bad.

  • Sony will get their investment back because Destiny rakes in STACKS. Seriously there are several million players that fork out around a hundred bucks annually for the game. Never to mention that it's expanding into film and stuff too which means that Sony Pictures can get in on the action. They don't need to make it exclusive to turn a big profit, so they won't.

  • Well heres the thing about this. Unless I am misunderstanding, It appears Sony has actually bought bungie, which means they can't just leave when time is up or arrange to get out early. This isn't a deal or contract. They are now a playstation dev.

Exactly. They'll have to do what their new boss dictates. And their new boss already said this:
“This is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience."
My guess is that they'll keep the F2P part of Destiny widely available but all other content will be PS exclusive. They won't achieve that expansion without making it exclusive to PS.

  • or Sony knows that pulling that move would hurt them in short and long run and have to bite the bullet and let bungie just do their thing and by doing so would bring in more profit as a result

Maybe, but I still think this is just the usual PR talk to smooth the players. After all, we are less than a month from a major expansion release, the least they want is to create any disruption inside their community.

  • I don’t think it’s pr it’s more likely to temper the flames from this and since they did this the moment it was news is kinda good out out potential fires before they spread and as such make it clear destiny isn’t going to be ps exclusive and even Sony knows that As for the other games like the matter game that’s a different discussion as that one is literally up in the air on wher that coin lands

The fact is that Bungie removed all Destiny related content from GamePass a month ago and I'll bet that it was related to Sony buying them. I'll also bet that Destiny will become PS exclusive after the already promoted content ends. Xbox players will have Destiny fully available until 2024. After that, two things may happen: 1 - Destiny saga ends (I really doubt it but it's a possibility); 2 - They create some kind of "Destiny 3" and that will be PS exclusive; That said, as an Xbox player myself, I really hope to be proven wrong.
