A few weeks ago I explained to a guy that I maintained that I could make a raider out of anyone who was willing to listen and learn. Generally when I meet someone (outside of LFG) who hasn't done a specific raid that wants to I give them pretty loose instructions: these are the weapon types recommended. For example for Scourge: you're going to want a decent sniper or scout rifle, a decent shotgun or fusion rifle, and whatever exotic makes you happy. That is your homework this week. On reset, come hell or high water, we're going to get you there. There are three types of people that aggravate me to no end: 1) the guy who 'knows what to do' but keeps messing up mechanics instead of taking the time to learn. We can spend 3 minutes learning or an hour failing. 2) the guy who talks over me when I'm teaching. I will give you one warning to shut up and then I will kick you. I have someone patiently trying to learn this raid and I will not have you impeding them. 3) the guy who blames everyone else for wiping when it's his fault. These three types of people ruin the fun of the game. Thank God for the 'boot from fireteam' button 👍

  • Feel you in the #1 guy, hopped into a Leviathan and didn’t start teaching until we wiped about 6-7 times on gauntlet pulling new folks in. Why post KWTD if you didn’t then expecting the encounter to get down without jack getting explained. We beat Leviathan after hat but god damnit I needed that moment of “Just ask for help”

Only prick I’ve ever hated in a raid was the fireteam leader who, when I tried to give tips to someone who was having a rough time, decided to brand me as “toxic” and threatened to kick me if I didn’t “shut the -blam!- up and stop undermining my authority”. Needless to say I muted my mic for the majority of that Last Wish run and got out as fast as humanly possible. I do not like playing with those type of egotistical nutjobs, though that has been my only truly toxic LFG experience to date.

  • Oh geez, that guy had an ego on him. I usually have at least one or two people who know what they are doing with me when I teach for this reason. If they spot someone struggling, then offering advice helps everyone out and doesn’t undermine the sherpas authority. P.S. Yelling at someone for being Toxic usually means that you have now created a Toxic environment, so that raid leader really didn’t care about teaching or anyone in the fire team.

  • Since a majority still don't know how to read vault, I was in this one fireteam with Last Wish, only one who knew how to read vault, they didn't want to do it and I told them "It's not as hard as you think, it's stupid easy", gave advice to one dude and he labeled me as toxic and said "Don't be toxic if you don't shut the -blam!- up I'll kick you" so I simply said "Alright jackass, if you want to be an asshole you certainly picked the wrong person to bear his fangs on, I'll gladly say I wish I could stay here to enjoy you suffer and get angry but I'm not to keen on someone yelling in my ear, later" And just left.

  • I would've verbally ripped that guy apart. He would've had to kick me.

  • Felt like it, but it was much more satisfying to sit there silently as the same person failed another three times in the exact same way while he just got frustrated.

  • I would add in people who simply don't listen and people who don't speak up when they don't get something. The latter is less annoying than the former for sure, but they will still cause a number of wipes even though all they had to simply do is speak up. The former is basically unreachable, since if you don't listen, you can't learn.

  • YES! It's the annoying part of being a sherpa, so many people come into a raid claiming they want to learn and come out swinging with "but I saw such and such do this". If you want to learn then listen and learn, if you want to raid like whoever then find people who want to do that. Clear communication on what everyone expects is the best way to raid.

  • I like to learn but the one time I tried leviathan we were at the well with chains or whatever. I asked them what to do and the kept starting it and yelling at me for not standing on it but it was killing me so I left and I hadn't really wanted to try it since because of that

  • That's on them, if they aren't going to teach someone what to do, then they can't expect them to know what to do. It's just common sense. Not to mention that baths is possibly one of the easiest encounter to teach, in fact almost all of leviathan is one of the easiest raids to teach. It is normally the one I recommend newbies start out with if they are new to raids. Actually now I would recommend doing the managerie first if possible and then doing leviathan, it makes for a good introduction to the idea of basic mechanics of raids, such as if there is a new thing item/weapon in the room, and there is something else new like a shield, the two new things likely go together in some way. My advice is don't give up on raiding just yet, there are people out there unfortunately that claim to "teach" when in reality they are no where near qualified, but there are plenty of decent teachers out there. This is especially true in some of the larger clans, who typically have an open door policy, and regularly take requests for raid runs and hold training runs as well. Just might be something to consider.

  • That's bad teaching on their part. I'm sorry that happened to you. It's disheartening to hear stories about bad teachers scaring off potential. If you're on PSN I could run you through Crown, but other than that I don't have any networked people I know on the other services that could help out and I trust to recommend for teaching.
