The problem isn't Tokens, it's RNG and Fixed Rolls.

To everyone complaining about the Iron Banner token system I want to pose a counter argument that the issue may not be the token system, but the fact that the D2 loot system is entirely RNG based with no value to duplicates due to fixed rolls. This applies to all vendors, but let's use Iron Banner as an example. In D1 we had a more limited loot pool with only two available pieces of IB Armor and two IB Weapons each month. The reason we were OK with this is because in addition to RNG end-of-match drops we could also purchase the items once we hit rank 5. So worst case we knew that for an investment of X time we were guaranteed Y rewards. Furthermore we could also continue playing if we wanted to try for better versions via end-of-match RNG drops, or a small chance for different items via bounties. The system both respected the player's time, and gave some incentive to continue playing past rank 5 if you wanted a chance at a better roll than the vendor. This past week I ended up with a wider variety of guns and armor than I normally could have ended up with from a single month of D1 Iron Banner. Despite this I still left frustrated. This was because although I gained enough tokens for 38 packages (all opened on my Titan) I still didn't have a complete set of armor. And because duplicates have no value, each duplicate chest piece and pulse rifle just made it all the more frustrating. According to Frodo-Jesus look-alike Luke Smith, Destiny is now a "collection" game. The problem Bungie is facing is how to keep you playing once you've collected everything. In D1 this became the hunt for "god-rolls" and better versions of the stuff you have. In D2 the only incentive they have to keep you playing is by ensuring there's always more loot to collect and that means they have to use a pure RNG system since vendor purchases would allow players to collect everything too quickly. If this sounds familiar it's because you might be like me and spent most of Y1 grinding for Gjallarhorn. The only difference is that when it finally dropped, you had a Gjallarhorn and not just another under-powered reskin.
