Blank Slate Ch.31: Band of Misfits

Table of Contents https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/225386550/0/0 This is a crossover with Destiny Legend Untold. Here's a link to its table of contents: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/212710816/0/0 Our six pairs of boots thumped on the ground as our jumpships glided away. I surveyed the area. Lush plants covered most of the terrain, the only exceptions being around the puddles of sulfuric acid that dotted the two paths in front of us. One led down to the wreckage of city, while the other led farther into the wilderness. "Wow, Drew," Trixie giggled, pulling my attention back to the team, "I didn't know you could do that!" "Yeah," Drew said, "Maybe I can help you find an Acolyte and try it out some time." Sierra stomped past me and groaned, "Null, never ask Drew to break the ice again. I swear, his stories keep getting more and more disgusting." "Agreed," Blanc concurred. It had become apparent that she did most, if not all, of the talking for Keis. "I'll be sure to remember that," Null assured. "Oh my gosh, look!" Trixie gushed, "Venus is still soooooo prettyyyyyy!" "We're going that way," I informed, pointing down the path to the ruins. "Thanks, Will," Sierra replied sarcastically, "I'll be sure to ask you for help next time I need to walk in a straight line." "Ouch," Null chuckled, "You've got a rough one on your hands, Will. She's as sassy as Yvan." I shrugged in response. I'd grown used to Sierra's behavior. We dropped our conversations and fell into a steady stroll down the trail, letting our weapons materialize in our hands. After a minute, Null decided to end our silence, "So, you guys seem like quite the misfits." Sierra huffed, "What's that supposed to mean?" Drew shifted closer to Trixie and whispered to her, completely forgetting that we could all hear each other on the comms, "What's a misfit?" "A misfit is someone who's different from everyone else," I explained. "Oh," Drew puzzled, then his footsteps strengthened with pride, "Yeah I am. Ain't nobody like me." "You're right about that..." Sierra muttered. "So am I!" Trixie bubbled, then dropped to her grave voice, "But what is it to be unique, if everyone else is as well?" "Okay..." I sighed, taking in the string of ridiculous comments, "I think you might have a point Null." "Doesn't mean it's not an insult," Sierra retorted. "It wasn't meant to be," Null soothed, "More of a compliment, really. I'd say my friends and I are all misfits, too. Right, Keis?" "Am I a misfit, Blanc?" Keis asked. "Definitely," Blanc answered sweetly. Keis looked over to Null and replied, "Yes, I'm a misfit." "You definitely all seem about as weird as us," Sierra added. "So, do you guys not have many friends?" I inquired, then quickly put my hands up and clarified, "I didn't mean that in a rude way." "It's fine," Null laughed, "And no, we don't. It's just the six of us and another girl named Ilya. She wasn't with us today. No friends outside our little clique." "It's more or less the same for us," I said, "We-" "FALLEN!" Trixie cheered, practically jumping up and down as she pointed down the trail. A small pack of Fallen were digging through the wreckage of cars on an old overgrown road between two rows of buildings. "Let's go get 'em!" Drew bellowed. "I saw them first so I get the first punch!" Trixie yelled, bolting towards them. "Okay," Drew replied, as if that made perfect sense, following her. Their charge was soon noticed by the scavengers, and a spray Arc bolts shot towards them. They barreled straight through the gunfire, closing the distance to their targets. "Uh, should we be worried about them?" Null's Ghost questioned. "They'll be fine," Rush assured. "Yeah, they do that all the time," I agreed. Drew and Trixie crashed into the nearest Fallen, launching their bodies through the air. They began tearing through the group, mercilessly smashing their terrified victims. "Wow," Null murmured, "That's pretty wild." "Wild?" Sierra repeated, "You know, Null, you really don't talk like a Warlock. They usually sound boring, like Will." "Hey," I fussed. "You know I'm right," Sierra said. I couldn't really argue, so I dropped it. "I'm more of a conversational guy," Null shrugged, "I guess I could talk like other Warlocks. I'm smart and stuff. But I said we're misfits, didn't I? What about you, Will? You have the most confusing wardrobe I've ever seen. You're not one of those cosplayers, are you?" "It's a long story," I explained, "Basically, I'm a Warlock and a Titan and I wear what I like." "That makes no sense," Null's Ghost said. "GOT 'EM!" Drew announced, his voice booming on the comms. "Agh!" I grunted, reaching for my ears, "Drew, don't yell. We're on the comms." "Oh, sorry..." Drew apologized, "Got 'em." We strolled down among the carnage to where Trixie and Drew stood proudly at the end of the street. "Did you see me punch that Vandal?" Trixie recalled, making punching movements, "I was all like BAM! And POW!" "Yeah!" Drew put in, "And I was all like WAPOW! And I got that Dreg like BOOM!" "Alright, we get it," Sierra dismissed, "Let's just keep going." The six of us continued around a corner to the next street. A cliff came into sight, looking over a sea of sulfuric acid. A small structure surrounded by the husks of cars sat at the edge, and a few Fallen were standing around it. "You guys can go get those ones," I said, "We'll catch up." I hadn't even finished before Drew and Trixie eagerly dashed past me. The rest of us kept our pace behind them. "You know," Null observed, "They're kind of like kids." "What does that make us?" I asked. "The parents," Null replied. "There's four of us," Sierra retorted. "Okay," Null pondered, "You and Will are the parents." Sierra huffed and pointedly looked away. "What are you and Keis?" I inquired. "Easy," Null said, "I'm the crazy uncle." I laughed, "That sounds good. What's Keis?" I could tell Null was smiling broadly under his helmet as he answered, "My parole officer." I cracked up at that. "I think Secilia is more like a grumpy daddy," Trixie inserted, drawing my attention to her and Drew standing over the bodies of the Fallen, "Veronica is like my sweet mommy." Sierra's gaze snapped to Trixie, and I couldn't help but think of how lucky Trixie was to be several meters away. "My name is Sierra," she hissed. "That's what I said," Trixie said. Sierra took a deep breath and whispered something to herself. I quickly tried to diffuse the situation, "Drew, Trixie. C'mon, let's keep moving." The two Titans jogged back to us and we resumed our journey. We only walked a short distance before a bolt from a Wire Rifle zipped over our heads. The cries of several Fallen rang out as they sprung up from behind the wreckage of some cars. Having nowhere to go for cover, I ducked behind Drew's massive frame as he hollered and shot back at the attackers. Bolts harmlessly splattered his armor as he defiantly held his ground. I leaned out from behind him and fired as the Fallen scrambled in front of us. I looked to see how the others were faring, and was surprised to see Null ducking behind Keis. "You do this too, Null?" I questioned, getting his attention and indicating my position behind Drew. "Never," Null answered, "But I saw you four and thought it was worth trying." Confused by his response, I looked the other direction. Sierra was using Trixie as a shield, just like the rest of us. "I didn't have much choice," Sierra grunted. "It seems to be working pretty well," Null observed, "They're like sponges or walls. You do this often?" "Yeah," I confirmed, reloading. "By the Traveler, Keis!" Blanc urged, "Take cover! You're giving me a heart attack." Keis slid over to one of the cars, leaving Null exposed. Startled by the sudden disappearance of his protection, Null ungracefully scrambled after Keis and joined him against the side of the car.
