The Path We Choose: Ch23

The crew of the Maverick, excluding Geren and Amelia, gathered in the cockpit to discuss what to do. "I think it's obvious what we need to do." Soren said. "Throw her out the airlock!" Morown jumped up. "I'm talking about Uldren not Amelia, you idiot!" Soren snapped. Morown sat down in frustration. "We need to try and contact whoever is paying us to find him." Soren continued. "I don't think we should continue." Morown said. "We have no leads, and no assurance that we'll get paid!" "So you want to give up on our greatest offer ever?" Sully asked incredulously. "I don't trust this mystery man, and I certainly don't want to die in a vain attempt to get money that probably doesn't exist!" Morown stood up, his face turning red. A piercing ring sounded throughout the ship. Everyone on board clapped their hands over their ears. After a few seconds, it ended, replaced with a voice that was obviously an Exo's. "I told you proof was to come." Myra whirled around. "Where are you?" she shouted. "Here, there. Does it really matter?" the voice said. "Yes, it does matter." She argued. "I'm not on your ship, if that's what you're worried about. I have a long reach." "What do you want?" Myra asked. A moment of silence, and then "I hope you will be smart about this, and take what I offer you. It won't be offered a second time. Due to unforeseen circumstances, your time has been extended indefinitely." The connection was cut, and the crew sat in utter silence. "We've got coordinates." Soren said. "What?" Myra asked. "He sent us coordinates. Deep space. It's going to take us a while to get there." Soren said. Myra ran her fingers through her hair. "I put Amelia in my quarters. She can sleep there for now. Soren, I want you to set a course for those coordinates on autopilot, then go check on Geren. Sully, it's not unreasonable to assume that others got this message as well. I need you to get to work on the cloak. Morown, recalibrate the weapons. I need time to think." she said. They spilt up and went about their jobs. Sully and Soren disappeared, while Morown went to look at the weapons. Myra went to her quarters and opened the door. Amelia was out like a light on the bed, snoring. Myra chuckled and closed the door. The ship landed with a thud. The small craft had been designed to hold only a few people, and it was not happy with carrying ten. Lyla stepped out onto the lush grass of the EDZ. She wrinkled her nose at the smell of flowers. She much preferred the smells of the City. Resolutely, she marched forward through the grass. Ahead of her, was a door cut into the hillside. It was just big enough for a human. Surrounded by her entourage, she stepped through the door and into the cold, clammy darkness. She would never understand these Fallen. Their love of darkness was disturbing. Ahead, a group of Vandals held three men. The men were dirty, and wore the clothes of bounty hunters. They were on their knees, their hands tied behind their backs. Lyla held up her hand cannon. "Who wants to talk first?" She said. All the men looked down. "No one?" She asked. "Well then, I'll pick one." She scanned each of the men, her eyes resting on the youngest, a small man with wild eyes. "You." she said as she knelt down. "Tell me why you were in my territory." The man looked up at her. He shook his head. Lyla raised her gun and fired. The man on her left, collapsed. The young one in front her shook with fear. "Tell me." she said "Or else I'll shoot your other friend. And after him, I think you know what happens." The man looked up at her with hatred. "I'll never tell." he said. Without a moments hesitation, she raised her gun again and fired. The other fell face down on the rocky floor. "Tell me what you were doing." Lyla said, not a shred of remorse or impatience in her eyes. "We were looking for the Prince!" The man blurted. Lyla froze. "What prince?" she asked. "Uldren!" The man babbled. "We received a message from an unknown source, saying we would receive untold riches if we killed Prince Uldren!" Lyla crouched down next to him. "Anything else?" she asked. "No! I swear!" the man said. "You have to believe me! I've told everything!" "Shhhh..." Lyla said. "I believe you!" She hugged the man. His body seemed to relax, calming down. A crack echoed throughout the cave. Slowly, the man slid down to the floor next to his friends. "Tell Solkirin, I have important news." Lyla said, standing up. She turned and walked briskly back to the ship. She had work to do.
