So was watching Halo Legends...

And was completely enthralled by the gravity of some of the stories, especially "Be Human" and "Babysitter". I never owned an Xbox so I never played Halo, except Halo CE for a few minutes at one point in high shool. Bungie, where was this storytelling during D1? Will D2's story have the same garvity/weight? Because I hope not every mission in the campaign will have "vex milk" levels of childishness. P.S. I know the game has a T for Teen rating and has an audience across multiple age groups. Just hoping for a few missions with a bit of weight to them. Edit: tempted to correct "garvity" but im liking how people are milking my rushed spelling. Edit: obligatory "trending" edit.

Hate to break it to you, but Legends was actually more of a 343i thing. Also, remember that Joseph Staten parted ways back in 2013/2014 and he was the LEAD writer. That was a very serious blow to Bungie on the creative side. People forget how many long standing employees they lost both with the split into 343 and with the launch of Destiny. I want Bungie to come out swinging through all this - but I just see a thicker skin and a bigger chip on their shoulder... and it's weighing them down. Here's hoping that D2 blows D1 out of the water!

Halo legends was a collab with 343i and other material using the source work from Nylund's Halo novels. Some of it took creative liberty to new heights with the origin material. However when it was release post Halo 3, I believe during the Reach Era [We waited on the Halo App on the Xbox 360 weekly for each episodes release], this was the most anticipated material that Bungie Halo fans had waited for as it did show some post Halo 3 footage, only that being Cortana revealing the origin story of the flood and forerunner war. Which was HUGE at the time. But since then the quality of the stories have been dropped by 343i in favor of taking it too seriously in a fixed way that put biology / specie world building before entertainment and awe. They turned it into hard sci-fi and made it tedious in forerunner mumbo jumbo that took away from humanity more terrifying and relatable struggle of fighting for its place in the universe. Also 343i decided to character assassinate Chief and Halsey, which were arguably the two main characters in the whole series, in favor of creating false context drama. That would lead to false advertisement with Locke and a contrived story of ONI hunting Halsey. Not to mention the S-IV's which under the right background story would have been fine, but under 343i universe it was made completely out of touch in their place within reconstructing humanity after near extinction post Halo 3. To be honest I could really go on with how badly Karen Traviss butchered the series onwards because she FAILED completely not only to read the past source material, but to actually have continuity and understanding of the past Halo Universe. Gregg Bear is another story whereby he is a great writer but when put into the Halo lens, has butchered the genre into like I said before, hard sci-fi. A similiar concept that would be like introducing 'midoclorians' in episode 1 of Star Wars. Making the 'force' more of an objective science based study of how the universe works. Its basically taking itself to -blam!-ing seriously and it's cringe af to read with Bears work. The dude wants you to fall into Halo like it was some kind of study of a forerunner documentary. Nylund's books were top tier because they were entertaining first, it had a human diliema at heart and you could actually learn from different pespectives because character building and large events were at the forefront of the story. Not characters bitching at each other for a made up reason that was unlike previous established behavior in past works like Traviss's books just so they can hit the wordcount target set by the publisher. There is a MAJOR reason why Halo lore dropped hard af after Halo 3, despite the INCREASE in EU material out there being put out by 343i. Halo 5's story is basically a summery that after at least dozen of attempts of creating Halo story, they still just don't get it.

I think that halos superficial story is pretty intriguing - just the stuff you learn from the games. The mysterious forerunners and why they did battling an ancient enemy is engaging. But with the reclaimer series I started disliking the story more and more. I know many will disagree, but I thought that the forerunners fighting ancient humans was really dumb.

      • It's a really great series man. Unfortunately the Bungie that created the first few Halos isn't the Bungie that made Destiny. Literally. Most of the original devs have since moved on. That's one thing people need to understand about Halo and Destiny. The guys pulling the strings for Destiny right now did not create Halo.

About rated T for teens. When I was a kid my friend let me borrow his copy of star wars knights of the old republic for the original xbox. It was rated T and yet is one of the greatest rpg/story games of all time. It had an amazing plot with tons of side quests such as working with an assassin guild and each party member having some small side quest if you got to know them enough, the story even included watching the bombardment of a planet by the sith fleet. So why in hell does a T for teen game in 2003 have a plot even adults will love while a 2017 T for teen game has plots like "vex milk" or "something with a G" and caydes (imo) silly/dumb banter?

            • Personally I like the Destiny storyline. It’s deeper than a lot of storylines in games. Wasn’t always solid but we all followed it happily. We just want more right? But hey, works well and the game is fantastic.

              • Yeah, so the problem is that you are basing all of this on a set of short films which are all made off the overall universe of Halo. Some sweet short films could be made off the destiny universe as well. The story in the games, which you apparently never experienced was always pretty weak. Oh look, this coalition of aliens hates us and wants to exterminate humanity in a religious jihad. Hey look at this giant ring. Oh this giant ring is their most major religious artifact but it's really a weapon. Oh the weapon will kill us all we must destroy it. And there you have the gist of halo 1. Wow, huge story.

              • Legends was pretty solid. I still think the best compilation of that type is the Matrix one, but they're all good in their own respect. I wonder others I haven't seen yet...? I strongly believe that the Destiny universe lends itself very well to this type of story telling. Heck, I could pull 5-10 random Grimoire vignettes and see them translating into something awesome for the small screen. Lots of potential... I wager we'll see a Destiny-style take on this by the time D3 rolls around.

I know that a lot of people will kill me for criticizing Halo, especially the holy OG trilogy, but it needs to be said. Halo never had an amazing story. It had a great framework for a universe and a decent story, but it wasn't anything like, for instance, what the books were. Bungie never was all that great at creating characters with depth(look at their attempts with ODST/Reach). There was a reason why your character never really talked in those games - they knew their approach of "letting people fill the role" would be better than what they would've made. Halo, at the end of the day, was a game centered around kicking alien ass with a bit of backstory and a lot of epic one-liners. So don't go around going "what happened to the master pieces, Bungie?!" If Destiny itself told somewhat of a meaty/interesting story, like Halo did, then it might change things. Halo inspired so many to contribute to an expanded universe because of the games themselves. A vague in-game story and off-site snippets of "lore" aren't all that inspiring besides to those that REALLY are into Destiny. Hopefully this will change with Destiny 2, but I'm not holding my breath. Destiny is a different animal at the end of the day that's mostly about looting and shooting. Does this mean that I don't think Halo is one of the best series of all time and that I think the story sucks? No. The Halo games, especially the trilogy, are my favorite games of all time. And I love characters like Johnson, Buck, Master Chief, Cortana, etc. I'm just saying that the franchise isn't perfect(nothing is) - even if it's arguably the best FPS shooter of all time. Does this mean that I don't think Destiny has interesting lore and that it's a bad game? No. It just has a lot of unfulfilled potential.

Halo is my favorite game series (even with the shit job 343 did with 5 - I still love it). I am currently on my 9th play through the series - playing through the whole series with my son for his first time! The lead writer for bungie and other employees that made them what they were, unfortunately left because of BS that went down before the launch of destiny. The grimoire & part of the story you got was from them, but the story was so chopped up and horribly redone that what was left was too difficult for their current crew of not very talented writers to fix. In comes the "properly exiting out" of character by killing them off at the beginning of D2 or just saying "their story has been told, the end" without actually explaining anything or expanding. I love playing destiny, it's a lot of fun, I am excited for D2, but I completely gave up on the "story" side of it after playing through the original campaign & knowing that since staton left, we will never get the destiny we had once hoped for Edit: pick up a used Xbox for cheap, the master chief collection, & a copy of halo: reach for the 360 (playable on xb1 or 360) if you get the chance - they are all old enough you can get them relatively cheap used and it's definitely worth the cost!

                          • More than a few of their veteran staff either quit or got fired, a lot of their newer employees are complete idiots who didn't care about what the old Bungie was like, and they signed up with Activision. Old Bungie breathed its last when they canned Marty.
