MUTE CHARACTERS : The Argument to END All Arguments

If forced against my will, I'd support voiced.

Title. People Who Support Voiced Protagonist : "More content is never a bad thing. Destiny is an RPG MMO FPS. Our vanilla experience contained 6 legendary voice actors/actresses and Destiny 2 should re-inforce that magic." People Who Support MUTED Protagonist : "This is my Guardian. No one voices who I am. I don't want to sound like someone I'm not." THE ARGUMENT TO END ALL ARGUMENTS : If a AAA Studio like Bungie is incapable of making a voiced protagonist that adds more to the story than it takes away, then they are an unskilled Studio that does not deserve the privilege of having millions upon millions of paying fans. / / Halo had a voiced protagonist that thrilled a generation of fans, to some who believe the original Halo franchise is the best FPS experience of all time. - - - - - I firmly believe that people who do not support Voiced Protagonist are in 1 of 2 groups of gamers. - - 1) They do not have a wide spread of gaming history to be able to properly formulate a valid opinion on the topic of Voice/Mute Protagonist. - - 2) Proper video gamers who simply have lost all confidence of Bungie being able to have the skill required to make a Voiced Protagonist after the complete disaster of story telling in Destiny 1. Dedicated players should not be punished due to the lack of skill and innovation from studio developers. If they are unable to learn from their past imaginations, they need to forfeit their product to a more passionate team. Andro out.

  • The biggest problem that I have with the way Destiny does things is that while we technically have a voiceless protagonist (most of the time. I'm pretty sure that there were lines for the character in Destiny 1), what we actually ended up with is something else. While our actual PC doesn't speak, we're bonded to this little floating light that speaks for us in every single situation. It's not like our PC never speaks but has a dialogue wheel; this would allow our character to remain voiceless while also allowing the character to choose text responses that would fill in the character in the way that they want them to. Yet, we also don't just sit there silently while people deliver information and instruction to us; in every instance that I can recall where our character is spoken to, Ghost simply replies as though he speaks for us. It defeats the entire purpose of the whole "blank slate mute" that seems to be the typical goal of a game with a mute protagonist.

I'd support it either way. it isn't a big deal to me. I do prefer the mute protagonist due to how this game attempts to make you the lead. You state Halo as an example... but its not a good one. Halo presented a character. I did not feel like that character at all, and that was okay. Halo wasn't trying to tell me that spartan was me. When Chief said something I wouldn't (because lets face it... he says more bad ass things than I do), it was fine because I recognized he was a character in this universe. If Destiny wants to do that. present the character as a real person in the universe. I wouldn't mind, but it would come with challenges. Challenges that obviously reared their ugly head in Vanilla D1 with terrible generic (some would say there was no point in voicing) voice lines. It is no longer an isolated instance that has one master chief. It is a lot of instancing (some might say shared instancing :D) And how are all those characters the "same" person with the "same" voice actor. They are solving more problems than they are creating with a mute protagonist. It just fits. Also. I do not feel I fit in either of your two categories. I have been gaming for 20 years and have played a diverse set of games in that time. I think a mute protagonist is the right creative decision with the goals of Destiny in mind.

    • I posted this elsewhere but will copy it below. Covers my thoughts on the issue. I have been quietly optimistic about Des 2. Taken everything with a grain of salt. Used the beta to feel it out. Watched/read the various releases of information. Picked it apart and theorized. Looked at the changes they have made and tried to understand where it is coming from and if it will improve the experience. The answer has mostly been yes. This however is a let down and not one that I will suddenly be okay with. Vanilla was a polarizing experience and there was so, so much wrong with the released product. From scarcity of legendary gear, to pointlessly confusing currency systems to an unclear antagonist and much more. For me, the one positive was my guardian and his interactions with the NPCs. The sceenes at the reef and the 'little light' cutscenes were great for making my avatar feel like a real person/robot/blueman groupie. I have felt the loss of that ever since with scattered cutscenes of my suddenly mute protagonist standing around looking bored while the grown ups talk it out. That doesn't make me feel like it's me in the game. It makes me feel like my guardian has become a cold, distant and uncaring weapon in a war fought by chessmasters that move me about with little more feeling than Oryx gave to the mountains of thrall he threw at me over the last few years. That kinda sucks. I'm not one of these attention seeking snowflakes that is going to claim I'll cancel my pre-order because they haven't got that one tiny thing in there to cater to me specifically. I pre-ordered on the first day available and am looking forward to spending thousands more hours playing in Bungie's newest murder-park while bantering the hell out of my clan but I will feel, justifiably, like there is something missing from the experience. Because I can picture every cutscene from vanilla where my space pirate/marine/wizard had a voice but I cannot tell you a single thing that was puked into my earpiece by Petra during House of Paw Patrol and that has to mean something, surely. P.S. sorry that ended up being such a long read. I suffer from some kind of irritable vowel syndrome

      • Or there is this third group of people that simply don't complain whatsoever. Or care whether or not we can/cannot speak. Weird huh? I wouldn't mind if our guardian spoke, but I also enjoy the fact that he doesn't because he is supposed to be me. Its called being optimistic.

      • I prefer a mixture of both. A good example would be Persona 5 where the Main Protagonist is mainly mute except for a few moments or in combat. It is the way of how the character interacts in the world, is how making a mute protagonist can be a good thing or a bad thing. In Destiny 2, perhaps it can work out but with that first mission, there were two moments, at least, that made it felt like your character should have had a moment to speak, even if it was just only one or two words.

      • I skip the cinematics in every game. I have no idea what's going on. I just want a gun, and a target. Voice, mute...whatever

First off, "Forced against my will Forced... against my will... Lol, what? A bit redundant are we? Secondly, you're already forced to deal with it if you're "forced" to play the game.
THE ARGUMENT TO END ALL ARGUMENTS : If a AAA Studio like Bungie is incapable of making a voiced protagonist that adds more to the story than it takes away, then they are an unskilled Studio that does not deserve the privilege of having millions upon millions of paying fans. / / Halo had a voiced protagonist that thrilled a generation of fans, to some who believe the original Halo franchise is the best FPS experience of all time.
And Master Chief had next to no lines and was talked to, Cortana spoke to us, just as Ghost does. Wonder why that is?
oh, right same developer...

I firmly believe that people who do not support Voiced Protagonist are in 1 of 2 groups of gamers. - - 1) They do not have a wide spread of gaming history to be able to properly formulate a valid opinion on the topic of Voice/Mute Protagonist.
Uh, thanks for calling me an ignorant moron because I'm indifferent on the topic?
someone's got a superiority complex, eh?

- - 2) Proper video gamers who simply have lost all confidence of Bungie being able to have the skill required to make a Voiced Protagonist after the complete disaster of story telling in Destiny 1.
Who said they lacked the skill? It's a design philosophy, as they've done it numerous times throughout their history.
Dedicated players should not be punished due to the lack of skill and innovation from studio developers. If they are unable to learn from their past imaginations, they need to forfeit their product to a more passionate team. Andro out.
Who said they weren't passionate? And how are we "punished" because of a silent protagonist? Can you not read body language? And no, I'm not voting in your redundantly worded, awkwardly biased poll.

Forced and punished? Some of you folks lead disturbingly sheltered lives. Not being offered the choice you'd ideally prefer isn't a punishment, it's the baseline human experience.

      • Your argument is a poor one I'm sure there are tons of people who would say that giving voices to Jack from Bioshock or Gordon Freeman from Half Life would have improved the experience of these games, but in the end they still stood as strong titles despite having silent protagonists.

        • A muted protagonist can and does attach to more players than a talking protagonist in said style of game. It has nothing to do with "innovation" and everything to do with research and studies that have been done for many years. The choice is based on what attaches a player to their character more to wider audience across the globe. People will not like the choice, but that is exactly what a consumer product is... a choice to purchase.

Funny. Mario, Link, Samus, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Solid Snake all didn't need voice actors to be good characters or to have great games. So if anyone hasn't been playing video games a long time, that would be you OP. Because clearly you didn't grow up in a time when there were no voice overs in video games.

          • That doesn't end all arguments. You shouldn't say that people who disagree with you don't have valid opinions. To do so makes you seem rather closed minded. I don't care if the protagonist speaks or not - it's me, I can fill in the blanks with my thoughts. You don't need a speaking protagonist when the protagonist is the player - Dark Souls and Elder Scrolls both proved that, and there's no reason for it to be attacked in Destiny.

          • Lol, you have to remember that the majority of ppl here would be singing bungies praises, even if all they got for their money was a box that said D2 on it. We have not included an actual game because we didn't want you to be limited by our imagination, you are the game, good luck Guardians.

          • Not going to vote, I dont think its a big deal at all. Wasnt a big deal in skyrim for me, wasn't a big deal in D1 and wasn't a big deal in any other RPG I've played. Won't be a problem for me in D2. I don't feel as if I'm owed the World from Bungie and I like the direction the game is going

          • Halo wasn't praised for master chief's lines or personality. In fact, Halo 4 & 5 have way more chief lines & involvement in story telling, & they're regarded as the worst halo titles.

            • I'm very much looking forward to D2, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit angry that there will be 50+ cutscenes in D2 and our Guardians will say NOTHING through all of them! Scream "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" or "GHOOOOOOOOST!!!" when he falls off the Cabal Flagship, DON'T JUST REACH AND STARE!!! How can our Guardians not be close to their Ghosts after he poured his little light heart out to us in the Khvostov Mission!? Guess I'm more than a bit angry, sorry guys. Just passionate about this.
