Bungie Weekly Update!!!

July 23, 2004 It's been a busy, busy week. So busy in fact, and so crunchtacular, that basically nobody is really available to chat this week. Sorry. Don't yell/flame/freak out. Sketch was out in New York being a muckety-muck all week, and I got roped into another classic Parsons travel-trap. It involves a passport, and some international shenanigans. Think sauerbraten. Anyway, lots going on in the studio, and I've been playing through a very nice-looking build of the game. I noticed the skyboxes are looking amazing. Skyboxes are basically the sky (duh) designed to look 3D with flitting clouds, translucent fog and a feeling of real space and height. One in particular made me actually gasp as I looked up. 'Gasp!" went I. The skyboxes are often fixed later in the polishing process and a bunch of the placeholders have had big holes in the center for a long time. Probably the ozone layer or something. Anyway, placeholders are becoming rarer and rarer. There's even a placeholder sound. A startling, yet melodic tinkle accompanies any footstep on an undefined texture – that is to say, a texture that hasn't yet has a footstep sound associated with it. I kinda miss the tinkle on multiplayer maps, since it loudly announced when somebody was walking in certain areas. Which you would then blast. With a Brute Shot. "Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle. Whump, whump, whump. Blam! Blam! Blam! Ow." Marty also let me hear one of the new pieces of finished music from the game. It was perfect. Totally inspiring, a soaring cavalcade of angelic ecstasy, tempered with just a hint of mournful longng, and all this to a totally danceable Euro-technobeat….I'm just kidding Marty. It was great. Last week's experimental foray to the Penny Arcade forums was a roaring success, if that is, you judge success by the number of flames, death-threats and pictures of distended sphincters you get. The Penny Arcade guys (who fear to tread there themselves and are super-nice) actually warned me, but by then it was too late. I read about 40 pages of angry flames before I realized that I had no idea what they were mad about. They were complaining about the arrival of the "noobz" yet only a couple of percent of the posts were actually by "noobz." It was a self-powered nightmare, but we all had a good laugh. I've actually been playing more and more of the single player campaign, but last night, playing multiplayer, through my own crappy connection, I noticed nothing. No slowdown, no lag and no garbled voices. It was like playing on a LAN. Wonders never cease. I hope that's typical of how it will be in the retail game. In single player, I'm being distracted by the lovely environments of course, but also by the amount of interaction there is in the levels. There's a lot more use of cover, by both good guys and bad guys, but there are other ways you interact with the environments that are both novel and old-school, simultaneously…. And on that graphics whore note, I noticed two new types of water. One shallow, one deep. Both lovely. Splish splash. I sure do love game water. My favorite all time non-Halo game water? The icy pool in Dead or Alive 3. Brrrr! Adrian Perez Adrian's bug-fixing has reached something of a crescendo. "Every week we get closer to finishing, which means that every week the bugs I’m fixing are less and less critical.  This also has the unfortunate side effect of making them less and less interesting to talk about.  I added a few gravy features to the HUD so that Dave can work his magic, fixed a few lightmap problems that have been plaguing us since the beginning of time, and fixed a couple dozen miscellaneous bugs.  One cool thing I did was allow the designers script control over the damaging of specific sections in a model.  If they want some scripted event where the left tire of a warthog explodes and goes tumbling away, they will have a lot more control."  Chris Carney Our multiplayer maven is tweaking, tuning, fixing and hammering on the multiplayer levels.   "Concerning updates, Steve “Land of “ Cotton and I have been spending our waking moments trying to finish up all of new content by next Friday (i.e. content complete).  Included in this last mad dash is some familiar lands, and yes, I can not be more specific.  But let’s just say that we have been spending some serious time with some old friends.  In addition, we are going through all of our maps to try and finalize any outstanding game play elements, and are also deeply involved in polishing the art in the environments to a fine glossy sheen.  One of our major goals in Halo 2 multiplayer is to have at least one or two of the new maps look as shiny as Butkus’s car."   Bam.   David Candland Our User Interface maestro is getting seriously down and dirty with icons, iconography and iconification.   "This was the week of icons, icons, and more icons. First off, I updated the Xbox Live icons in the friends, clan, and players menus. We needed a special icon to represent a specific team member. Max suggested adding a large sombrero or foam cowboy hat to the friend icon. Although I laughed initially nothing better popped into my head. Fine, sombrero it is…for now. Next, another throwback to the Myth days. Our player level system is getting icons based on the Covenant caste structure. You will soon be able to see how good a player is just by looking at his rank icon.   Lastly, I’m working on refining some of the custom player emblems that don’t read well at small sizes. Sorry, but I’m afraid the shrunken head has got to go. Event horizon is borderline. Flaming Ninja has won the battle of emotional attachment over legibility. He’s in.   So, that's it until next week, when I'll recount my mysterious trip. I know it was short, and a bit limp, so I'll make it up to you next week. Until then, here's Mister Chief reacting to a skybox. It's more of a scream than a gasp…

Now the angry villagers will be after you with pitchforks and torches. Don't say that you weren't warned. Now I have to lock a Frankie-thread. What is the world coming to? Oh, and yes. You ban them, they create a new account and then come back. If someone wants to keep spending mom and dad's money in order to be a jerk, that is between them and their so-called parents. You see, we contemplated actually killing them in a grisly and disgusting manner (there were thousands of applicants for the position). Then someone brought up the fact that we'd all end up in prison for mass-murder. Trust me, game developers look awful in orange jumpsuits. Really awful.

  •
Posted by: Diplomst "No clue how that rumor gained so much momentum." You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd say that sentence is drenched in sarcasm. But of course I do know better and am sure Frankie really doesn't know *cough* www.ilovebees.com *cough* how that rumor gained so much momentum.
Oh, it's drenched in sarcasm alright. You're not missing the obvious. Not like the dozens who flooded the forum who apparently "can't write [their] name or read a book" well enough to notice the giant "NOVEMBER 9" on the very trailer that contained that URL. Or like the other dozens who could, yet chose to believe their wildest fantasy and ignored all other evidence, including the consequences for Bungie would be if this was all a smoke-screen for an August release. Or like the other dozens who unthinkingly went with the resulting stampede instead of stopping and trying to figure out if this was reasonable. I think we should all go and read up on Orson Welles' little Halloween prank in 1938 when he made a wonderful radio play based on the War of the Worlds; enough of the audience, jittery about war rumours, took the play at face value to cause a huge panic. Voices of reason were ignored, evidence that this was a play was swept aside, and out came the sandbags and shotguns. Afterwards, there were a lot of "told you so"s and "shoulda been warnings"s. Looks kinda familiar, don't it? *sigh* That was almost 66 years ago. I'd hoped we'd learned better by now. -- Steve is still learning the lesson Canute tried to teach... but the tide of credulity has minds behind it and so can be taught. Maybe. If they'll listen.

But of course I do know better and am sure Frankie really doesn't know *cough* www.ilovebees.com *cough* how that rumor gained so much momentum. The CTF level that journalist and fans have been playing since E3 and most recently at G-Phoria, might make for a good demo map to release to the gaming public at large on, oh I dunno, say August 24th. However, this would only be the case if a demo was being released but, we all know there will be no Single Player Demo Release....right? [Edited on 8/21/2004 3:39:22 AM]

Still 7 after all these years... - old

All this complaining and bickering doesn't change the fact that whoever is responsible for the ilovebees "mystery," be it Bungie, or Microsoft, or your Mom (would she tell you "the real deal," if it were in your best interests not to know? I doubt it), THEY WANT YOU TO FIGURE IT OUT FOR YOURSELVES. And they want you to enjoy and piece together the hidden storyline in the process. The blatant irony there is, if you were to get the story hidden in ilovebees.com put together, you'd figure out the mystery. -Alas, Lloyd thinks this won't happen in these forums, as too many people will take great sadistic pleasure in flaming him for what they know in their hearts is true. To quote Frankie...
Sigh.

  • Actually I'm saying it like this, Frankie WILL NOT tell you the real deal. PERIOD! He's telling you what you have seen already which is the Nov 9th release, you've seen it all over the place and so has everyone else, nothing surprising about that. But what is really going to happen on Aug 24th you can bet your A$$ that Frankie will NOT spoil it even if it was a Pre-release or demo Frankie will stick to the origianal story.

  •
Posted by: CableGuy_ The bottom line is that Frankie will not tell yout he truth, no one at Bungie or Microsoft will tell you the truth. You are supposed to be lead on by this mystery which is the sole purpose of why Bungie put [that web site] on that trailer to begin with.
I can interpret that two ways. I'll do you a favour and interpret it as saying that Frankie isn't going to spoil the puzzle for us by spoon-feeding us answers. Neither will Microsoft employees. We're going to have to solve it for ourselves. Otherwise, I'd have to interpret that as you thinking that Frankie is a liar. In which case I'd have to Do Things to you which are unmentionable in polite company and quite humiliating for you. So it's a good thing I'm granting you the benefit of the doubt... but you might want to watch your phrasing next time. It might get you into trouble. -- Steve spells "trouble" with a capital "D" and that rhymes with "E" and that stands for... Edit: fixing a busted quote, and alas I don't mean the tag. [Edited on 8/18/2004 5:32:44 AM]

  • Frankie is a Bungie employee, you know for a fact that he will not tell you whats really happening here. Frankie knows whats going on with ilovebees.com, of course he will not tell you whats going on, he's only going to tell you what we know which is Nov 9th release. Now the mystery behind ilovebees and Aug 24th is meant to be a mystery, you think Frankie will ruin that mystery, HELL NO!!! The bottom line is that Frankie will not tell yout he truth, no one at Bungie or Microsoft will tell you the truth. You are supposed to be lead on by this mystery which is the sole purpose of why Bungie put www.ilovebees.com on that trailer to begin with. [Edited on 8/17/2004 8:25:51 PM]

  • I kind of know how the whole rumor about the demo thing started. A whole lot of people (Like Me) want Halo 2 so badly, that we had to ask if they were going to come out with one on OXM, but some one came out and said "The next issue" and people saw it and answered similar questions in the same way, wanting and thinking it to be true. Sorry for playing a small part in the rumor... its just... i want to play it sooooo much. I apoligize for any misspelling (From lack of sleep).
Posted by: Frankie Halo 2 comes out on Nov. 9th or Nov. 11th for the UK. It does NOT come out on Aug 24th. You know what does come out on Aug. 24th? Some OXM special which does NOT, and I repeat does NOT have a Halo 2 demo on it. No clue how that rumor gained so much momentum. But to reiterate, Halo 2 comes out Nov. 9th or Nov.11th for the UK. Sigh.

  • I agree with (all of) you I mean, I really think the curent "footage"and stuf are great but it's all multiplayer (and again that's not all that bad) Í'd like a single player screen or at least a new screen or something. But then I'm just the new guy from Holland;). Later [Edited on 8/12/2004 10:07:47 AM]
