Now presenting; Skullgirls: Mobile Edition

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from the city of New Meridian, with everybody's favorite serpent, and zombie; Leviathan and Sienna! Sienna: "Hi everyone. You can just call me Squigly. Also, Aifos, don't say "zombie", that's offensive." Oh.. Sincerest apologies. Anyway! Have you wanted to get into fighting games, but don't want to memorize crazy combos? Have you been curious about the world of Skullgirls, but don't want to pay that $10/$25 price tag? Have you wondered what a turn-based RPG and fighting game look like mashed together? Well, have I got a deal for you! Introducing Skullgirls: Mobile Edition (or Skullgirls: ME)! Set in the Skullgirls universe, this free to play mobile app, is an exciting cross between your 51-combo fighting games, and your weakness reading turn based RPGs! Play as a familiar cast of characters, as you join the elite military squad known as the Black Egrets, on their mission to protect New Meridian from the Skullgirl! Will you overcome the challenge, and save New Meridian!? Squigly: "I think he's trying too hard.." Leviathan: "He always does.." *ahem* Well, anyway, Skullgirls: ME is an app game, that's a cross between a 2D fighting game, and a turn based RPG. I'll explain the mechanics to you, give a little review of my experience thus far, and I hope you give it a shot. ^-^ Mechanics:
So first off, fighting mechanics; The 2D fighter part is super simplified. Tap for a basic attack, keep tapping for a conbo, swipe forward for a dash attack (2x chain), swipe down for a sweep attack, and up for a launch attack (follow up with a tap). You can also block (hold 2 fingers on screen), grab (swipe up with two fingers), and charge a tap for a powerful attack. Now, the TBRPG mechanics: Special moves (stuff that usually requires stuff like 236MP+HP) are activated by pushing an icon. Most special moves regenerate over time, but Blockbuster attacks--your most powerful ones--charge by taking or dealing damage. Fighters have two big determining factors, as well as smaller stats. Character Class; this determines their moveset, appearance, and perk tree. Attribute; this defermined their elemental weakness/resistances, as well as their color Let's focus on attribute: Fire is strong to Air, weak to Water Air is string to Water, weak to Fire Water is strong to Fire, weak to Air Light is strong to Dark Dark is strong to Light However, a more skillsd Fire will usually beat a lower skilled Water. Character Class is what character they are. Peacock, for example, is a Fire type be default (Rerun Peacock), but can also be Dark (Inkling Peacock). Perk/Stat points are shared between all Fighters of a Class, but the Perk/Stats themselves are independant. Now, it's a free to play app game, so you know what that means.. There are two types of currency. Canopy Coins are found all over the place, and can be bought with Theonite. Theonite is a bit rarer, but not uncommon, and can be bought with real money. Most Relics (how you get new stuff) is purchased with Theonite, while Canopy Coins are used to purchase Perks/Stats, level up items, etc.
Quick review:
It's really fun. You have the block/counter feel of fighting games, and the special moves give a feel of almost turn based attacks, being worked into combos. Sadly, combos simply drop off after too many hits, rather than an IPS, like the console Skullgirls. Even so, a smart player knows when to retreat. I also don't like the "loot box" mechanic, of buying RNG chances at things, nor the pay to win aspect, of buying lots of Theonite, and getting Gold fighters early. Microtransactions aside, the pacing seems really nice. You never feel like you can't win, though overlevelled enemies are harder (duh), but they're marked with a skull so you know what you're getting into, and a good player can still pull through. The fighting mechanics are a little spammy, but every combo is designed rather fairly, from what I've seen. Each character feels unique, even though basic attack protocols are the same. All in all; it's free. Give it a try. If you like it, go buy Skullgirls: Console Edition, or buy some Theonite. Give Lab Zero some monies. :3 Also, I am totally biased. Love Skullgirls almost as much as Bloodborne. <3
Tl;dr? Here's my point! BLATANT ADVERTISEMENT! Now on iOS & Android!
