Does anyone like traffic cameras?
To those of you forunate enough to be unfamilar with traffic cameras they are cameras that monitor traffic and snap a picture of plates for traffic violations, for example i woke up this morning to a 135$ camera ticket for running a red light a month ago.
The cameras and there tickets are entirely automated and are more expenisive than there regular officer issued counterparts, they can be appealed but are unlikely to be waived.
They generate there cities general fund with 10s of millions of dollars a year.
The cameras are regularly postioned at busy intersections and school zones which some have called pradatory.
Others have argued they are illegal becuase they violate ones right to face there accuser, but to get around this the tickets stamp the nearest officers number on them.
This is my first and hopefully last ticket but it got me thinking.
Who voted in favor of these and who actually likes them?
I think traffic cameras are just greedy government overreach then again i live in a blue city but still I know no one who likes or defends them yet despite there unpopulartiy they seem to only be appearing more.

5 RepliesAh I just find them being placed at busy intersections dumb, either put them everywhere or nowhere. You're just making the speeders go different routes

2 RepliesI got caught about three times on red light cameras making turns just as the light changes. I didn't enjoy it. However getting t-boned by someone running a red light is not enjoyable either. I live near one of the deadliest intersections in America and after red light cameras were installed deaths are down. I would qualify red light cameras as a necessary evil.

I never paid any of mine and I think eventually my state or city (st. Louis, mo) deemed them unconstitutional. Also I had friends that would fight them in court and all you have to do is switch the court date once (usually officer's schedule them in blocks) and no one will show up and you're free to go Bottom line: DO NOT PAY IT! The greedy bastards don't need to be taking anymore of your hard earned money You could also claim someone else was driving I imagine [spoiler]Jesus the people in this thread are why the TSA exist. -blam!-ing idiots[/spoiler]

We only have those on bus-only roads in the UK. And IIRC, they have to get the penalty notice to you within 2 weeks or they cant make it stick.

5 RepliesNot that big into motoring law but I think it's been shown that they help reduce speeding. Also, I don't see how it's predatory to put them in front of schools. If anywhere should be watched 24/7 for speeding motorists it should be where large groups of children regularly congregate.

1 ReplyNothing wrong in ideal theory, but it does tie government incentive to violation of traffic laws, which is problematic for fairly obvious reasons.

I don't have a problem with the cameras themselves. The current system turns them into predatory tools that the state can use to siphon more wealth out of people's pockets, though. Public roads are essentially just revenue generators for people in the government.

It's the state that's doing so. Overall, I don't think they're bad. Speed traps along roads are shitty, but I don't see much harm in placing them in intersections. Running a red light is extremely dangerous, and you deserve your ticket.

There use to be a couple of them down the road I used to take to school. The traffic light switches signals very fast. So either you run the yellow light at 100 mph to not get flashed or be paranoid and just stop at the green light. It's happened to me twice now, and the first fee was $70. Second time was $110, I believe. I received both tickets in the mail a year ago. The cameras aren't there anymore due to complaints. Glad they got rid of them.

Ohio outlawed them not too long ago luckily. Many people refused to pay the tickets because nothing would happen to them
