Storm-19 had left Morgana shortly after meeting her uncle at the Cryptarchy stand. She had been retelling their encounter with Rasputin (which Master Rahool found "fascinating”) when Storm had politely excused himself to do…what? It took him a moment to realize that he didn’t have subconscious drives directing his actions. He probed the breach in his head case and wondered if it was contributing to his dilemma. He had no reason to eat or sleep, and thanks to his Arc Light he didn’t need to recharge his batteries. He visited Banshee for a few minutes, but quickly determined the old Exo was having a hard time following the conversation and decided it would be better to give the gunsmith’s processor a break. He was about to go back to the database terminal he had stayed at for the last two nights when Nimbus appeared. “What are you doing? Find something else to do than research…stuff!” “What would you propose I do?” “Why don’t you go somewhere fun?” “Very well. I can use the Tower’s database to locate—” “Nope. We’re keeping you away from the computer tonight. What about that Flamma girl? Why don’t you check in on her, maybe take her up on that tour?” “I have already used the Tower’s database to familiarize myself with the City’s layout. I am not aware of Flamma-7's current location, but a quick search should—” “I think you’re missing the point of this. Hey! Why not go practice your abilities in the training room?” “Is it accessible at this hour?” “Only one way to find out…without using an interface.” The answer turned out to “yes”…because someone was already there. Storm exited the elevator to the sound of simulated gunfire. Across the room, he could see a familiar red-and-brown-armored Titan unloading a scout rifle into a Hive Knight with a sword. The massive beast swung its cleaver, but Troy-29 rolled out of the way and brought his fist down on the Knight’s knee. As the holographic creature stumbled to the ground, the Exo followed up with several body shots before pulling a shotgun from his back and blasting its face. The Knight disintegrated into pixelated dust. Troy noticed Storm’s approach and beckoned him forward. “Hey, come here! I want to have a word with you!” “Good evening, Troy-29,” Storm greeted with a handshake. “What are you doing here so late?” “Just Troy. I hate to be reminded of my age. As for what I’m doing, I think you had a similar idea: it’s never too late to squeeze in a little extra practice. I heard about what you did today. Gotta say, you’re lucky to be alive, but everyone is so glad that you accomplished what you did. You impressed me, and I rarely get impressed.” “I could not have succeeded without my friends,” Storm admitted humbly. “I was deactivated during the fight with Riksis, but Morgana was able to revive me before we finished him off.” “Hey, give yourself credit where it’s due!” Nimbus chided. “He was the first one to demonstrate how to use a Guardian jump and used his Super against some Fallen!” Troy removed his helmet. “Now that I gotta see. Lift into the air and slam down in the middle of the arena. Don’t worry about causing collateral damage, the floor can take it.” Storm moved into position and got a running start. He jumped into the air and lifted, gaining height until he almost touched the ceiling. Arc Light coursed over his form, arresting all momentum and dropping him at terminal velocity against the floor, making lightning spark all around him. He stood up and turned to see Troy’s reaction. The veteran Guardian nodded. “Now I’m really impressed. You’re fight against the Darkness has increased your experience faster than any I’ve seen. You’re an official Striker now. Have Rahool and Volkov progressed to the same point?” Storm nodded. “What is a Striker?” “At any given time, a Guardian can only use one Light aspect,” Troy explained. “For each class, this Light exhibits itself in a different way. A Hunter won’t use Arc Light the same way as a Titan. As a young Titan, you first start out using Arc light with aggressive tactics to scatter the enemy and draw them away from your allies. That makes you a subclass of Titan called a Striker, and your Super is called the Fist of Havoc. Rahool is a Voidwalker, and uses Void – as the name implies – to create a Nova Bomb. Volkov is a Solar-wielding Gunslinger and can summon a Golden Gun.” “What are the other subclasses and Supers?” “Arc Hunters are called Bladedancers and use an Arc Blade. Warlocks Sunsingers create a Solar Radiance that has a number of different capabilities, including self-resurrection with enough experience and training. Finally, Titan Defenders use Void Light to summon a Ward of Dawn shield to protect themselves and allies.” “What if I desire to hone my skills as a Striker? My tactics seem effective the way they are now, and I would hate to use my time inefficiently.” Troy waved him off. “You still have time to learn Striker techniques. As far along as you are, you’re nowhere near ready to harness Void Light. But when that time comes, you definitely should practice being a Defender. Not all combat scenarios will have you smashing your enemies.” “What kind of scenarios? I haven’t experienced anything thus far that requires a defensive strategy.” Troy chuckled. “I can’t tell if you’re being curious or stubborn! Tell you what, why don’t I just show you? Achilles.” His Ghost appeared beside him as he put his helmet back on. Achilles had a red and black shell like Troy’s plating and had metallic attachments reinforcing its front top and bottom points. “Set the Ambient Light Modifiers on Crucible,” Troy continued, stepping in front of Storm. Achilles flew over to a control panel against the wall. “What are Ambient Light Modifiers?” Storm asked. “Out on the front lines, your Light won’t hurt your allies,” Troy explained. “You could even shoot a teammate point blank and their Ghost’s shield would completely transmat the rounds. The only time you’re in danger of hurting yourself is if you’re too close to your grenade when it goes off. That’s all well and good when you’re fighting real enemies, but when you’re sparring against each other or in a Crucible match, you have to find a way to inflict damage on a fellow Guardian. An ALM is advanced technology that weaponizes Light against itself in a confined area.” Troy held out his arms. “Try to attack me.” Storm hadn’t expected him to do this. “I don’t want to damage you.” “Ha! Confident, are we? Don’t worry, you won’t.” Storm ran forward to use a Fist of Havoc, but Troy threw something in his path. Storm stopped just before the grenade exploded. He wasn’t damaged that much, but something felt off. Something was preventing him from tapping into his Arc Light. He turned back to Troy to see the Exo inside a glowing purple dome with his arms crossed. Storm drew his auto rifle and shot the shield, but the rounds were destroyed on contact. “The Ward resists all forms of high-energy attacks!” Troy told him. “You’ll have to penetrate it personally.” Storm was hesitant to step inside Troy’s Ward. Strategy algorithms warned him there was something he didn’t know. He cautiously approached the shield and extended his hand to touch it. The moment the tips of his fingers penetrated the purple veil, static enveloped his field of vision. Before he could retract his hand he felt someone grab his wrist and flip him over, slamming him to the ground. A few seconds later the static cleared, and Storm saw the muzzle of Troy’s shotgun pointed at his face. “You lose,” the Titan trainer stated. He lowered his shotgun and helped Storm get up. “What have you learned today?” “I think I need to reevaluate my strategic assessment protocols,” Storm replied. “How did you keep me from using my Light and blind me?” “A Defender’s suppressor grenade keeps enemies from using abilities,” Troy answered. “Don’t worry, it wears off pretty quickly. As for blinding you, well…” He tapped his Helm of Saint-14. “I admit I cheated a little. This Exotic helmet lets me blind anyone inside my Ward. It’s not something Defenders can normally do.” “Exotic armor?” “Some armor’s been developed to modify a Guardian’s Light. They can add certain features to a subclasses abilities, allow you to use multiple ability techniques at once, or store Light for a specific ability. This one only works if I’m a Defender. If I refocused my Light to be a Striker, all it would do is stop bullets from hitting my head.” “What are ability techniques, and why can’t you use multiple ones at once without Exotic armor?” “You’ll learn more about those the more experience you get as a Titan. Some techniques work well together while some don’t. You can’t punch, chop, and jab all at once with the same hand. With practice, you’ll figure out what works for you.” “Thank you for taking the time to teach me these things,” Storm thanked as Achilles flew back to Troy. “It’s what I’m here for. At the rate you and your friends are learning, you’ll be getting the hang of techniques and more Light aspects in no time. And you’ll need it, if you plan on partaking in more missions with unexpected problems.” Storm recalled their fight with Gotra. He still couldn’t comprehend the Hive Wizard’s powers. “Why was an interdiction put on the Moon?” Troy’s demeanor darkened. “Earth's Moon was where we first faced the terror of the Hive, and it became the battlefield of a great war - one we didn't win. I imagine in the years since, the Hive have ripped the Moon's surface apart, opening chasms that swarm with terrors. We once looked to the Moon and saw hope. Now we see only the power of the Darkness.”
