I've read a lot of posts and I've noticed that no one has realised that the change to the weapon slotting has actually very little to do with variety, which is what Luke Smith said.
Bungie ran out of ideas of how to solve the shotgun and sniper issues in pvp and decided to simply move the snipers and shotguns to the heavy slot. Which will once again have a big impact in pve.. Think about it for a second. All pve players know the best and most efficient load out was always to have a sniper rifle & a rocket launcher or a heavy machince gun in your special and heavy slot.
Now with this change You'll have to decide when to go with a sniper rifle vs an actual heavy damage dealing weapon like a rocket launcher, Which will be a big annoyance in my opinion since the change wasnt needed. We're actually going to be less effective at taking down bosses since heavy ammo will have to be shared between rockets and sniper bullets for example. And for what? So we can equip 2 hand cannons or a hand cannon and pulse rifle? It honestly doesn't make sense. If anything, fusion rifles and shotguns will be used even less in pve since theres no reason to pick those over a sniper or other actual heavy weapons.. So that argument about variety goes straight out the window.
Maybe Bungie also did this to make pve encounters harder but I can safely say the main reason why they did it was because of pvp, which honestly isnt cool.
Snipers and shotguns are mainly single fire single kill weapons. They should not be in a category with massive damage dealing multi kill weapons.
