If you dismantle gear, either for parts or to feed to another piece, the ornament is gone. This is a known fact, whether you're just now gaining that knowledge or not is kind of moot. If you're not sure if the piece of equipment you got is the one you want to keep, don't put an ornament in it; it's really that simple.
