The bullet blender theory

Earlier today i had 2 very different raid experiences: the first one i had was a very focused minimal small talk maximum focus group for aksis phase 2, and we completed in run no wipes. The 2nd group i played with was maximum small talk minimum focus and we could not get past vosik phase 2 (the main topic of conversation was the bullet blender, hence the name of the theory) My theory is that raid teams (mostly lfg teams) who focus less on talking about bullet blenders for example, and focus more on communicating the mechanics will do the raid encounters quicker and more efficiently (sounds like common sense, and it probably is) Thoughts on this theory in the comments? *i also find that turning off in game music helps focus more

    • A little bit of small talk is OK when we aren't communicating. But my raid team has been 4/6 consistent of the same people since VoG/Crota days. 6/6 since RoI. We are all about 20 or older. So we can easily focus on communicating and know how to do the encounters. The only thing that can mess us up is any lag that might happen.

      • yes. It's pretty annoying to have a 12 or 13 year old constantly talking about 5 year old memes while everybody else is trying to communicate empowerment ect. lol

          • Personally, I find that a raid with less small talk is a raid that is less fun. They're boring and I genuinely find them hard to get into but when people are talking and making jokes and going off topic, even if it makes us wipe a bit, it is much more fun and enjoyable. I'm sure it would be different for people who aren't 400 yet or are brick walls because they just want to get it done, but when you have everything done, (except challenges, god dammit) it doesn't matter as much.

          • Most of my raid groups, (90% LFG) once we walk into the encounter call out positions, then 100% talk about random stuff.

          • My last 3 lfg groups were morons singing loudly and the others were some douche in the background blaring shit music and the other a child on the mic screaming autistically.

          • I agree, for the most part. When you've got a group of people that all know the raid down to every single pixel, then you can occasionally get a group where you can get encounters done and talk at the same time. I find myself those groups to be the most enjoyable, but hard to come by.

          • This I why I raid with my own group, do that we all know what to do, who's saying what, and we can actually communicate efficiently. This is also why we hardly even communicate the raid mechanics, we just do them. And so we just talk. Which led to the creation of the 'Paper Concussion.' Don't ask...

            • Mkay, so if you raid with the first type of group then you'll get in, get the raid done, get your loot that you most likely don't need anyway and get out. simple, some people want this thats fine. But raiding with the second group? you probably had a lot more fun, with a chilled group just talking about random shit and had some laughs for an hour or two. This is also how I have made some long-term friends in gaming. It's up to you to choose which you prefer but I would choose the latter any day, it's a social game after all.

              • I ran a raid with no sound in game, no mic, colorblind settings on, and no hud. We pulled off one of our fastest speed runs, a no wipe raid, and we did the challenge.

                • For the entirety of the taken king I had a group of pubstomping friends. We did the raids for shits and giggles, collections and what not. All 6 of us would go into kings fall, talk about everything BUT the raid and it's ongoing mechanics, besides a couple callouts when required, and we'd do it in 50 minutes or less every time. It really only ever took THAT long because of bathroom/drink breaks and at least one of us trying to be a troll every now and then. Point is, it's not the conversation, it's the team. No chemistry required. Just know where adds spawn, know your role, and have a little common sense.

                    • tbh at this point in Destiny when there is nothing worth while to get out of WotM and the "grind" of old is all but fully removed from this game I would much rather piss around a few hours with a fun energetic raid group then to fly through a raid with a bunch of boring people who only talk for call outs.

                      • As someone who has run over 300+ raids (mostly in Y1), I'd say if your group is more experienced, you can probably get through the raid while chattering about whatever. The more people understand what they need to do to finish the raid, the less important it is to communicate, other than for timing purposes. However, if your with people who don't work together regularly as a cohesive unit, it becomes far more important that you keep communicating every step of the way (I don't need a play-by-play, but definitely more communication is generally better). That's just my 2 cents.

                      • I've played with both types of teams and can tell you that you're right on the money. The people I've raided with usually breaks down like this: Direct Friends: These are the people you game with the most, you've played enough to understand where everyone's strengths and weaknesses are and are probably the best people to raid with. Friend list friends: This is usually people on your friends list that you don't really game with very often, they usually have a space in the fire team that needs to be filled and you just happen to be online. The Lagger: This persons connection is behind everyone else's and it's near impossible to get through a raid with them in the fire team. The unhelpful leader: This guy has done the raid a lot, probably with an experienced group. Now he's helping out others but doesn't have the patience for them. If someone messes up he'll spend about 15 mins poorly explaining what to do. The Blamer: This guys faults are always some else's cause, never his own. Worst kind of team mate. The Egotist: This guy thinks he's carrying the team, always ready to pat himself on the back while he completely ignores the efforts of others. The Easily Distracted: Typically a young kid, usually running around throwing grenades or shooting/melee'ing his team mates. Will interrupt if you're trying to explain part of the raid to someone. Always the first to activate the raid even when everyone is not ready. He'll also keep giving everyone updates on his current situation instead of focusing. The Noob: Never done the raid before and usually doesn't have the right weapons for the job. This isn't a bad thing depending on the people they're with, they can pick up things pretty quickly if they're with a good team. There's probably more I just can't think of them at the moment.

It's easy to talk about other stuff while making call outs in game. Just gotta have good chemistry and you'll be a ok

                            • We usually screw around on our way between encounters but when a fight is active its encounter related only.

In my opinion the best raid teams are somewhere inbetween. Folks who know what they are doing, don't place blame on others, can focus, but also joke around and laugh. Trust me there's plenty of those teams out there. I definitely disagree about the music. For myself anyway. I do turn game sounds down and party chat up, but I gotta have that kickass music playing!

                              • Welp every group needs a leader, and small talk really undermines that. The quiet group probably had a leader you were following without even realizing it
