The Vex, and why they're doomed

So it seems that the Vex are one of the fan favorites, but the amount of hype these guys get is ridiculous sometimes. In the grand scheme of things they're irrelevant and will never be a threat on the same level as the Hive, the Worms, or the Darkness itself. To understand why we need to start by looking at the biggest difference between our universe and the one in Destiny. Within our universe existence is governed by physics. Within Destiny's physic is only one of three governing forces, the other two being Darkness and Light. Yes, Darkness and Light aren't only philosophies and entities, but fundamental powers by which existence itself is governed. Now, I know what you're thinking "but Saint, the Vex have time travel cant they just *insert timetravel nonsense here*?" No, they clearly cant or else they'd have won long ago. One thing we all must realize is that the Vex deal far less in timetravel and far more in alternate timelines. They tend to jump between roughly congruent moments in parallel timelines rather than truly draw from the far future or distant past. In fact, the only time we do see them do that are in the Black Garden and the Vault of Glass, two very unique instances that are, from what we can tell, not representative of the whole. Now, this isn't to say they aren't powerful in their own right. They have an understanding of physics and a mastery of space-time that we cant even begin to imagine. The problem is they're incapable of comprehending either Light or Darkness, as well as anything sufficiently close to either of them. The Vex work by collecting every possible variable, simulating every scenario imaginable, and then taking steps to ensure every scenario ends at the very least in their survival. For something like that, the inability to comprehend, and by extension simulate the Traveler, the Darkness, the Guardians, Oryx, the Taken, and the Worms, that's a pretty massive handicap. They can't use their greatest weapon because its useless in this massive ideological war they've found themselves caught up. tl;dr: Three people are playing a game of Texas Hold'em. The first two guys play normally and follow the rules. The third guy is only allowed to play with the 2 cards he's initially dealt. He isn't allowed to play the flop, turn, or river, but the other two guys are. The Vex are the third guy in this scenario playing against the Light and Darkness.

          • I've seen some interesting theories about how the vex are humans from far in the future that have come back to strengthen us by conflict etc... hence why they haven't completely obliterated us by now. Obviously the theories go into more detail than that though.

            • Well, no shit. The vex are just as useless as the hive, the fallen, and the cabal. Merely agents of the darkness (although some unwillingly) against Wielders of the Light. Bit silly.

            • Everything seems to have a scheme to live forever. The Vex included in that end goal. The Cabal immortalize themselves in their achievements, their empire, their warpath. Individually they will die, but their mark and their civilization will live on in glorious crusade. The Hive want to become immortal over the process of evolution, the weak feed the strong in an eternal cycle of perfection. Maybe, one day, that cycle will end and the perfect being will have dominated all life. But, personally, I don't think that will happen. The Fallen want to become machines, because machines don't expire like fleshy life dones, and then they won't need the ether. Which is more of a shackle than it is a life blood. Their 'gods' are simply objects that keep them alive and strengthen them. If they can keep themselves alive and become their own strength... they won't need gods. Well, it sounds better to say 'we're gods now'. The Vex have an ingenious way to live forever. They want to be a universal constant. A Cosmo. Something that simply is, always has been, and always will be. To not live within the universe, but to become it. Imagine, the whole universe, in all timelines, in all scenarios the Vex have become the solution. Every answer becomes the Vex. Everything controlled, monitored, maintained, willed to exist or be deleted at the whim of the Vex. Their enemy? Entropy, chaos, uncertainty, ignorance, and secrets. If you look at the cards, most (if not all) of their units are build for construction of certain things. Which is surprising. They are architects first, combatants second. If you can find a way to stop entropy, to halt chaos, to solve uncertainty, to pierce ignorance with all seeing eyes, and to know all the secrets there ever will be, how can you be defeated? That's why they have different timelines. They have to have all the answers, all the questions and its forms, answered. To leave a way to fail would be catastrophic. They can't understand the Light or the Dark because they are the essence of what the Vex fight against. The Light changes things, morphs planets, grants powers, from absolutely nothing. Nothing but 'light'. The Darkness is equally as chaotic. Evolving the Hive race, corrupting the mind and body, changing the fabric of time, infecting and piercing and throbbing wherever it goes, even granting machines 'faith' and 'will' beyond their own collective minds. It has no sense of order, it has no sense of finality or end design or plan (so far). It simply consumes, corrupts, and moves on. The Light sees things in terms of rebirth, renewal, and life. To build themselves again and become stronger. The Darkness sees things as energy, as food, as flesh to be consumed. Power to be moved from stomach to stomach, host to host. Knowledge is a similar form as well. There is no renewal. You refine yourself in your life, prey on the life around you, and become the strongest. The Vex see things in algorithms, not energy. A code here will make something happen there, everything that interferes is a virus. They see things as they are, how they should be, and what they will become. They do not desire to improve themselves. They remain constant. They remain the same. They desire to change everything around them. They are perfect, the universe is not. Yes, they can improve their chasis or their weapons. They can augment their armor and develop shields and improve their mobility. But they can't change what they are, who they are, what their thinking is. Their minds are static in a weird way. They comprehend knowledge as a means to an end. But do they understand that more and more knowledge is also supposed to encourage the way you think? Are they so old, so ancient, so hell bent on their goals, that they can't grasp another reality? This is also a weakness. If they do not change themselves fundamentally, they can only adapt by so much realistically. That is why they have to change their surroundings. They can't change their nature, but they can change the nature of everything else. The Light and Dark will shape themselves using their will and methods to become the best possible form to master the universe around them. Vex, however, will simply shape the universe around them to become their will. And I'm certain if they could change the Darkness and the Light, they would. It must infuriate them that they can't control it. -- Of course, this is just my on the spot speculation. I doubt I'm right, and this is anything but a lore post. But it's fun to think about.

                    • But Saint doesn't the Vex have physics and the Darkness on its side. Of course, the Vex does not have complete knowledge of the Darkness, but the Guardians don't have all the knowledge of the light (which is the entire part of the game). The Vex had served the Darkness before and the Book of Sorrows shows this. So is it possible that the Vex are separated in groups (Team Vault of Glass vs. Team Blackgarden)? Atheon does not work for the Darkness. In fact, he might hate the Darkness. What do you think?

                        • Yes, they can alter timelines, turn back time, can regenerate over time, and re-conduct the meaning of time... But they'll never solve the timeless question: What is the meaning of life? That is why the Vex have already failed.

                        • Well you make two important assumptions. 1. If they could *time travel nonsense* they would have won long ago. This approaches the idea of winning from a very linear point of view. If they're capable of time travel then before and after have little meaning. Perhaps their goals aren't to be the last ones standing but to simply be present throughout all timelines. If, as you say, they deal more in alternate timelines then there is no reason to suppose that we exist in a timeline where they won't win. 2. Being unable to access the light or darkness is a handicap. Physics has one major benefit over light and darkness. Light and darkness are diametrically opposed forces. It isn't outside the realm of possibility that light and dark forces might suppress each other enough that the vex's superior control of physics could keep them at the top of the leaderboard. Its an interesting take on the Vex. You could be right, but your logic is hardly foolproof. There are far too many unknowns... just how Bungie wants it.

To use your reference they are dealt the weaker hand but can clearly see what the others are playing with while theirs is still hidden so all they have to do is ride it out and wait for that moment to bet it big
