The Nintendo Switch Has Already Failed

The Switch will likely succeed.

The Switch will do okay and survive for a while.

The Switch will likely struggle to thrive.

With the Nintendo Switch being recently revealed, I had high hopes for the console to really succeed where the Wii U had failed. However, after watching the reveal, I have been left quite disappointed. I have taken the time to write down some points on where I think Nintendo has gone wrong for the second time. As much as I'd like to see the console succeed, I have a hard time believing that it will due to Nintendo's latest errors. Feel free to read it and share your thoughts on why you think it will do well or poorly. •
Clever advertisement, OP
Jim Sterling has some similar, but more vulgar, thoughts on the matter. He does raise a good point, though.

    • Remember it showed Skyrim being played on it and the console is also a mobile device which means I can play Skyrim anywhere.

I will admit that most people I've heard from are pretty tired of the gimmicks, however the thing that will make people buy it, and probably one of the main reasons the pre orders are sold out would be the Nintendo exclusive games that are coming out for it.

It will be like the wii, cool for awhile but eventually the lack of games will kill it off, and then you will only play it when you want to play that 1 game you liked (super smash bros)

                  • I think that meanwhile it may struggle in the beginning, partly due to the initial lack of games for it, once things pick up and we get other games available for it, it will likely become more successful due to the fact of how easy he transition is to go from console with TV gaming to handheld gaming. The only thing we may need to watch out for is the battery life while it's in handheld mode, if it only lasts for a couple of hours, sure that might last during some journeys but if you're travelling for the most part of a day or longer, it's gonna be a problem. Especially if you're playing big games like skyrim and Zelda, you're not really intending to only play for a couple hours at a time and you certainly don't want it to die in the middle of a session. The only other thing I'm a little wary of is that they're intending to make online, a paid subscription service. Sure it might be reasonable once there are bigger multiplayer games but that's still be dependent on pricing... if it's like the pokebank then sure I can get behind that cuz it's only about £4.50 for 365 days. However considering online use for the 3ds and such is currently free, what about those kinds of games if they'll become accessible on the switch? Like Pokemon sun and moon, I've heard there's going to be a somewhat spin off for the switch called Pokemon stars and if it's anything like the main series of games then we'll definitely be wanting to use online features for trading and battles, unless exclusives may be offered to incentivise paying for online, I don't see why we'd suddenly have to or want to pay for it when it's currently free now.

                  • I think one of their biggest missteps is not capitalizing on their IPs. Kid Icarus, Metroid, Star Fox, Smash Bros., Bayonetta, and many others are nowhere to be seen. Not to mention the shape of the "tablet" form of the console. It's flat on the back. Why? WHY? WHY?!?! That's the same EXACT thing that the Wii U controller got slammed for, and they had to redesign it! SO flipping frustrating. Then you have the cost of accessories and lack of bundles at launch. This might be something to buy a year or so from now, when the price drops but it's a horrible launch day purchase.

Here's the thing. Nintendo has no intention of trying to please hardcore gamers. That's not their market. Nintendo aims for purely entertaining, casual experiences. Their goal is to have a console in the hands of every family, every non-gamer, etc, and provide them with quality entertainment that while not top of the line, is enjoyable from a gameplay standpoint. The place they are failing in is their marketing. Think about the Wii. That thing was heavily marketed on tv, and ended up being in nearly every household, even though it was outdated tech. Then look at the wiiU, the average person still doesn't even know it's separate from the Wii. Nintendo can really hit it big with the switch. They just need to understand who to market towards. It not hardcore gamers.

                      • There are problems with the Switch and I would suggest still deep seeded issues with Nintendo that have existed ever since the console manufacturing game became a sport for big electronic companies. But to say "The Switch has already failed" is such hyperbolic nonsense. They're fine for launch. They have a Zelda game. Point me to the last console that launched with a killer app. Sure $299 is a tad high. I think Nintendo needs to have that price advantage over Microsoft and Sony. But it's not like they are at a disadvantage by being more expensive. The Switch has some buzz and has some huge titles in the pipeline for this year. I think their biggest problem is that the advent of smartphones has killed any chance this thing leaves the household. This thing will be a home console or a tablet the kids use while Mom and Dad watch TV and that's a good selling point.

                      • Here's the thing though. It's a matter of quality vs quantity. Yes, I was disappointed at first seeing how few launch titles there were. But let's be honest, are you gonna buy multiple $60 games & a console at launch, or just buy one must-have game that you're going to spend hours and hours on? Yes, more variety at launch would've been great for those who aren't into Zelda. But most people are going to buy the Switch for Zelda, and they'll probably spend so much time on that that they'll ignore the other launch titles they bought until after they beat Zelda. Plus they seem to have a schedule of releasing a game every month this year. What does Microsoft and Sony have going on this year? Microsoft doesn't have Halo or GoW this year, and Sony hasn't even announced release dates for GoW, The Last of Us II, etc. This year looks better for Nintendo games than Sony and Microsoft games. I only wish the PS4 and Xbox One had a must-have exclusive game at launch. Their launch line-up wasn't exactly great either. They had a lot more than the Switch, but it was mostly ports and mediocre exclusives. So for quality exclusives, I think the Switch will do fine.

                        • I think the Switch will do fine, Nintendo learned from the Wii U's mistakes and made something to make up for it, basically the Switch is what the Wii U tried to do and failed miserably at. There's always a feeling of doubt in the air when something new comes into the gaming industry, for example I remember there were a lot of people saying how the Wii would fail but look how that turned out. I'm not saying the Switch will sell like the Wii but all I'm trying to say is give it a chance before jumping the gun and declaring something that hasn't even been released yet a failure.
Its also generally a good sign when a console's preorders sell out basically everywhere, I don't think the Wii U even achieved that
• Nvidia will probably make sure that this thing doesn't fail. After all, they did make the processor. I mean come on, when was the last time Nvidia hardware was in a console that wasn't their own?

                            • I'm not as down on it as a lot of others seem to be. I'm confident that it will sell better than the Wii U, but not to any significant degree. It definitly won't sell the 100 million that the Wii did. The Switch will survive purely on its first party exclusives, same as every Nintendo console since the N64. Unless the Switch surprises everyone and becomes a breakout success, Nintendo's third party situation won't improve really at all, I feel. The rest of the objections I have with the Switch are pretty much the same I had with the Wii.
