Trials is beyond hope

I'm going to start this post with a personal account of my experience with Trials in year one, and then with why I have changed my view on Trials completely(concerning possible fixes related to making trials more accessible). WARNING: THIS IS LONG My Trials, overcoming, and the glory of sharing victory with friends: During house of wolves I was personally disappointed that there was no raid. POE wore thin very quick, and the Skolas encounter was more frustrating than fun. It was at this time but I lost most of my PVE clan mates. Along came Trials of Osiris, and I was immediately intrigued by the idea of a true endgame PVP. Upon stepping into Trials for the first time, I was blown away at the competition, and learned quickly... That I wasn't ready. Up to this point I had been mainly a PVE player who dabbled with 6v6 modes, almost always avoiding 3v3. I remember telling a friend who had attempted some runs, "I'm going to do it man, I'm going to get better so that I can go flawless". Cue the montage: I trained 3 hours a day, watched tip videos, and regularly sought advice from better players on how to improve. Play sessions were not just run around and shoot, they were sessions where I tested and mastered various techniques, and plays. Embracing the Meta: I gave up all motions of vilifying the "meta" and embraced it(at the time it was Thorn). Before Trials, I despised Thorn but I realized very quickly that almost every match featured either Thorn, The Last Word, Felwinter's Lie, or Epridete's Spear, and yes I used the final-round exploit in many matches. I found that in 6v6 games the Hunter was my go to, but a Titan with an Armamentarium build was my best for Trials. I took note of all positions in every map available, and built a vocabulary System that I would use to communicate more efficiently with my teammates. The recruitment process was challenging, as I had to dig into a whole new pool of players outside of my normal, fun-loving-raid-friends. No matter how nice on the surface, this new breed of player was calculating, Judgmental, and impatient... It was essential that I performed at my best, or be left behind. I also had to master the Zen part of not getting frustrated no matter how stiff the competition. Finding the right team: After many failed attempts, and full-blown disappointment, I finally found a few players who had a good mix of desired, gun and communication skill. Both players were from the UK. They had a serious, yet tempered disposition, and the chemistry between us was workable. We were well rounded. We had one player who was good at mid range combat, a damn good sniper, and myself, who was a specialist in pushing the pick(sniped player), with double lightning grenades, followed by a barrage of shotgun fury... We practiced In skirmish and in Trials, honing our skills and communication... At some point we became a well oiled machine. Each person in the group was not only willing to take criticism, but would often times admit failure. We listened to each other, took up the slack, help each other when one of us was down, and would compensate for each other's weaknesses. Before we knew it... We were ready for the big game. The Lighthouse: Our first run to the lighthouse was intense to say the least. It was filled with high drama, amazing comebacks, winning against a team of cheaters, and I even picked up a few friends on the way. We beat 2 teams who were on their 8th win, and in the final match we beat a team who was on there eighth match, no boons. Several of the teams sent me friend requests, and I later ran with them. When we won, and it was real that we were going to the Lighthouse, we all screamed like sports fans seeing their favorite football team win the Super Bowl, but it was us, WE had won! All the work, and time that we put into it meant something to us. Not the big chest, or the exclusive social space, or any of that, it was rising from the disappointment of defeat, and the ultimate joy of victory... None of us were carried, and multiple games featured each fireteam member in the top slot, and subsequent matches where we all rode the bottom... Following in Osiris's footsteps: I went to the lighthouse by myself, because I wanted to explore without holding anyone up... Even at this point I was a PVE player at heart and I knew that there was more to the LightHouse than the loot chest(SPOILER ALERT). I spent a few hours crawling through every nook and cranny, until I found a secret area that had a lamp, bed, and what seem to be notes and items strewn about... Something told me that this was Osiris's hiding place before he eventually disappeared into the Vex network on Mercury. I made my way to the Loot chest and got exactly what I was looking for, The Messenger Adept. This became my weapon of choice in every trials run in the future. It was the weapon for me personally, that gave me the opportunity to break the meta- at the time. Again, I want to stress that this whole process, the work moving into the eventual victory, meant a great deal to me and I wanted to share it with my real life friends, and furthermore the entire Destiny community, Taking a friend to Mercury: I had a friend who was an excellent shooter player going back to when we were in high school. He was always the best at every shooter, but he was somewhat hotheaded... When I told him that I had made it, he became very interested, but our first attempts were rough because he was traditionally a self interested solo PVP player. In short, he had difficulty acclimating to the team-based style that trials required. I refused to give up on him. We went through a separate recruiting process because my regular team could not deal with his attitude. Eventually we found a very patient, talented player who could fill the role of sniper. After a few attempts, and refinement of communication, I was able to help him get to the lighthouse. I was probably more excited to have shared that victory with one of my best friends, than my initial first trials run to the lighthouse. We both got the Summoner adept, and immediately brought it into standard crucible. At the time auto rifles were almost completely unused and it was so awesome that we were running around kicking ass with weapons that bucked the meta-at the time. Again, I want to stress that this victory had meaning, it was a momentous occasion, two real life friends going to the Lightouse together... Grabbing cool gear and having a good time. BUNGIE'S change to Trials and its impact: I have written many posts criticizing Bungie's change to card based Matchmaking and its effect on this end game PVP mode, so I will spare everyone. I can say however, that I have done everything mentioned in my long post at the end of year two, going into year three to reach the lighthouse, and I have been completely unsuccessful. Trials has changed, and it is obvious that Bungie favors the extreme elite, paid professionals, and streamers over everyday players like myself, much less a new breed of player. As a community, there has been a significant portion of us who have presented options to open Trials up to a wider number of players, but they have been ignored. And there are many, who meet any suggestion outside of the current state of trials, with ridicule and distain. I read a post today that exacerbated everything that I feel is wrong with Trials today. "if I change was made to place flawless players into a flawless bracket, I would simply quit out of an 8 and 0 card, re-join, and continue to block players from going flawless". With all the paid carries, professional streamers, and hard core players who make it a point to block others from having the awesome experience of going flawless, The entire act of going flawless has lost any meaning that it had. These players don't give a shit about the achievement, they're simply re-joining to continue their domination of lower-level players, or worse, purposely doing it to manipulate the system in a way that provides them supplemental income. My premise: I'm providing no specifics on how to change the system, and I'm not trying to change any one's mind about the sanctity of competition... I making a simple point. Trials of Osiris has lost its meaning, and there is no hope, because nothing Bungie will ever do, can change the current trials communities voracious inclination to shit on itself. If you make a flawless bracket, they've got several accounts. If you lock them out, they'll do account recoveries. Only time will tell how long this toxic environment can exist in its current state. The legend of Kaliuga paints a picture of a snake eating its own tail, up until the point that it consumes itself, this is my vision for the future of Trials. I have lost hope that any change will matter.

  • Just read this and I completely agree. I'm a casual gamer with a +1800 elo which makes me look good but not that good as sometimes I have good games and bad games but yeah its full of sweats and trials is dying due to the shitty system

  • Shit is broken and the only people that like the current system are the high elo players pub stomping. If they had to consistently play equal players or higher they wouldn't be on here saying git gud.

      • Have to mildly disagree with you, if i have time i still do a friday run with sone of my y1 frienda and we try and if we make it then hoorah. Then i spend the rest of my week either running stacks to get my characters flawless or (free) carries to help others. If i carry on past 9 wins its either because someone wants scarab or I'm looking for good competition. I'm never trying to intentionally block somebody, but this isn't meant for everybody. Only the best of the pvp community should be getting flawless.

        • No matter what way it's spun. Every complaint about trials boils down to a simple complaint. "I shouldn't have to play people better than me". There are only 3 answers to any complaint. 1. Accept that because you aren't that skilled you'll lose more than you win. 2. Get good. Or 3. Stay out of multiplayer.

          • I'm a PvE and PvP player, and I play trials to have fun. I literally screamed when I got the sparrow on my first 5-0 win, the farthest I've ever gone that time. Probably never going to lighthouse, but the the meta needs to be changed. Kinda want to see the occasional... Shit, I forgot the weapon. It was a yr 2 weapon from Trials. See, this is what the meta makes you do: forget. That Scout always rekt me. I dunno why.

I took a break from Destiny for sometime before Rise of Iron came out, but I consistently played trials during season 2. Like you, I got an average team together and we eventually made it to the lighthouse, and then kept going back. We were casual players, but above average in PvP. I always checked my current matches on destinytrialsreport.com and the average elo was anywhere from 1100 to 1600 for most matches. Granted there were also a few higher and lower elos we faced, but this was much more competitive and fair. When I got back into trials for season 3, I could tell an immediate difference with trials. The average elo I face now is anywhere from 1400 to 1900. The majority of players are "elite", and that makes it crystal clear where Bungie's priorities lie. Your analogy of the snake eating itself is perfect for what trials has become. Casual players just don't care anymore, and I'm almost there myself. I'm not particularly mad, just disappointed that they haven't made an effort to update the MM system. It's been a problem since year 2 and has only gotten worse. Bungie may be worried about ruining its end game pvp mode, but I believe changes could be made without comprising this idea of competitive end game pvp. I would make the MM based on card wins + a tiered bracket system of average elo. This change would make trials difficult every match, but at the same time evenly matched. This system better rewards players with LH gear for improving in a realistic environment. Also, it's only fair that competition would increase as your elo increases, and decrease as your elo decreases. Other ideas might include having two mercy's instead of one, or maybe bring the card down to 7 wins in place of 9. Changes that involve the casual player will bring them back to trials. I'd be curious to know what other changes you all might have. Regardless, there's a lot that can be done that hasn't been done. Again, I'm disappointed that Bungie continues to sit on its hands with trials. I hope to see some change in the future.

            • Wonderful post. Read it all. I have to admit, I despise trials. The concept of anything that is dominated by slimy cheating basement dwellers makes me want to scream. And that is exactly what trials has become. Granted, I'm not that good at crucible. Like you, I worked at improving, and brought my 0.02 KD up to a little under 1.0. In most game modes I can hold my own most of the time. But in trials, getting slaughtered by people who have literally no-lifed this game just makes it the opposite of fun. Now I understand that trials is for the elite, and I am certainly not an elite crucible player (for which I'm quite happy, to be honest). I haven't even completed a single match for my year 3 book. I tried. Couldn't win one. Total wipeout every game. But as you pointed out, the toxicity and pure evil intentions of so many of these so-called "elitists" has turned this part of Destiny into the Bog of Eternal Stench. And frankly, they can live there all they want. Well written, Sir, and thank you.

              • I am a filthy casual, play for fun and what used to be some reasonable rewards. Hadn't played for a while, played this weekend with a very low ELO friend for bounties as he wanted some stuff. Used to do the bounties in one card, one and a bit if unlucky, this weekend I couldn't get the bounties done in two cards, we got stomped, absolutely hammered. For the filthy casual its a complete waste of time now, the rewards feel crap and more importantly any fun factor has long gone out of the window, I am certainly sworn of trials now. I am a 1.1 kd overall mainly 6x6 player but quite happy in skirmish or elimination.

Problem with trials is almost every average player lost hope and doesn't try anymore, so you're left to face new guardians or trials gods. We either win 5-0 or get smashed 5-0. We rarely have competitive matches.

                  • Well said. I completely agree. You are the voice of the overwhelming majority, somehow drowned out by the D-bag elitest minority (including many that only take their stance because they make money off the system). I have many friends that will never come back to this game, because of what trials has become - the streamer led era. It's currently a broken system, especially for the casual player. It turns those players completely away, not just turned off to pvp.. but as a result, the whole game. For every d-bag that says trials is not meant for casuals, you can eat a dick. End game pvp should be no different than end game pve, and plenty of good "casuals" get to experience the excitement of beating Crota, etc. Everything was more fun in year 1. Everything. Bungie has taken the joy out of the game and experience over time. I'm convinced that the people that run the company are complete -blam!-ing morons, because they alienate their very player base.. The repeat paying customer.

                      • Trials sucks and the people who play it are a joke, they aren't fit to lick the bootheels of players who play cod or halo in esports and MLG. It's unbalanced like a mfker and has no dedicated servers. Enough said.

                      • Trials isn't supposed to be beaten by below average or even average players. It's supposed to challenge everybody's abilities and reward only the skilled and talented. There is nothing to fix here.

                        • i have to wholeheartly agree to everything said there.. given the fact that ToO doesnt have Matchmaking makes it a BIG hurdly for the vast mayority of players to just try it and it narrows down the pool of players willing to put in the initial effort to find a team to run.. probably since most of the teams are "go flawless or leave".. and they leave and form new teams if they have 1 loss below 5 wins. i have been flawless more than once and the first time i got my inward lamp adept was awesome. this scout carried me through the skolas encounter .. year 3 ToO... i was hopping in with two non PvP friends.. just to do the yearbook event.. and we encountered two kind of players: - teams that would jump of the map once they saw the clan logo - teams that completetly wrecked us in a matter that was amazing to watch =) after the match "we lost big time but got the bounties".. i did two things :i checked the playstation live streams. even the paid carriers had a horrible hard time since they only were matched against other play for a living players.. and i made the experiement to get a paid carry.. outcome.: now this is a game and i think bungie devs could not be any more wrong with stating that ToO is not made for the casual players. i can , easily.. just separate the paid professionals from the casuals and both may have fun if the idea of fun of the professionals is not "easy wins" against noobs. (which they dont have right now) when i got my carry i asked the guys several questions.. in short : they play 16 hours a day.. they train in between trials and they do shifts to carry players.. .. that is out of reach for every normal player.. i simply cant spend 16 hours a day to get on their level.. and i dont want to spend 16 hours a day.. i want endgame content.. something to play which bungie promised in all their videos.. i would rather pursue the story further to learn about the world and the lore IN GAME than doing PvP but i would even take this.. i am quite ok in IB (last IBs was around 1.3KD) but i cant see a foothold in ToO since i am not playing with a preconfigured team and need to do MM through a lfg page.. (which should be in game anyway)

I haven't been to the light house much. The first time was in my birthday and it was amazing. Back then in Year 2 when you could SOME WHAT enjoy the game. Now I'm a sweaty. I am ashamed of what I have become. I have a platinum in Eliminaton and close to a platinum in Trials. Yet when I play with my friends I get stomped.... This wasn't the trials I remember with madadors and palindrome and everything else.. Sniping is difficult when you see a person with a shotty coming for you... I have a good K/D on my hunter and a good sniper. Once you get past 5 wins you play against people who play trials to beat people like you and me for the amusement. I am Pissed and I agree with out

                          • I made a post a while ago about a decent idea of what I believe a lot of the issues of trials are right now and a simple fix on it. My thought is that trials suffers because guys who don't play PvP nonstop have no reason to enter anymore. Im not great, my average KD is around like a .8 because i use guns i like instead of what is godly but i can hold my own in most playlists. I play elimination occassionally but lately ive been going to skirmish because of how crowded elimination is with trials players who want nothing more than an easy win. Its not an issue with the game mode, its not an issue of skill really, its not even an issue of metas. The reason why a lot of players like me hate ToO is because it is so damn stale and predictable. I have only been killed by five weapons in year 3 trials, three are pulse rifles, one is a shotgun, and one is a machine gun. The maps don't rotate so i really hate playing the same map for two to five cards in a week trying to finish bounties. The game mode doesn't encourage competition, it encourages you to throw two skip grenades at a guy and get a free round victory. The worst part is that it never changes. I played willingly during the Festival of the Lost because it was actually fun to me thanks to it actually having something new to it but any other week i would rather solo challenge of elders than do two matches of Trials. No average player wants to go into a game mode that judges you on luck more than skill. No player wants to spend 3 hours playing one map and usually in the same spawn. No player wants to spend hours for bounties and only get two blue engrams and some legendary marks.

                          • Thank you for this. Probably the longest post I have ever read on here (and one that I actually enjoyed reading). I agree with everything you said. The number of players playing trials plummets each and every weekend because people are getting tired of the weapon imbalance; and the overall BS of tryhards, top players, and carries (paid or not, this doesn't matter). Sadly, none of this can be avoided in a game mode like trials. Sure, you will have your top 1% PvPers playing every weekend, but this means that trials will become very intense (sweaty) for most. Perhaps this was the original goal? Make it as tough as possible so only the best of the best players will make it to the lighthouse each weekend. However, this is also a double-edged sword because most of the players who started playing trials aren't playing anymore (numbers are declining rapidly). Furthermore, trying to make something so difficult -- or inadvertently causing this elitist attitude of going flawless every weekend -- has turned trials into two things: A sweat-fest for some, or a pub-stomp for others... Not fun for either side if you ask me. Trying your hardest to win each and every match gets old fast (regardless of what others think about "earning" the lighthouse victory), and pub-stomping teams takes the fun out of it as well (completely sweeping each and every team can't be fun). They have a long way to go if trials (or any variation of it) returns in Destiny 2. As for inadvertently (or intentionally) causing this elitist attitude... This community tends to be split down the middle, on most things, but trials has also made the PvP scene more toxic. Just my opinion. Great post!
