Crucible Map Design

Why are most if not all Crucible maps flat? One reason as to why might be that It's easy to wrap your head around a flat space. In nature most places are flat. And as a land based mammal we evolved to worry about threats from left, right, front, back and in some rare cases above but hardly ever below. Another reason might be budget. You might not want to take the risk of building a map with an unconventional or largely untested design. It's a risk. If you take a look on first-person-shooter multiplayer maps in general you would see the same thing. The overwhelming majority of maps are flat. Why is this? Is it, as I said above, because it's easier to overlook and wrap your head around them? Is it because game designers can't or don't want to take the risk? Now, back to Destiny. I think that with the very high mobility that your guardian have vertical maps can work. If you would look at all the maps from the side they are all wider than they are tall and none of them have more than three levels. They are all essentially a flat rectangular prism or a flat triangular prism. I'd love to see a pyramid shaped map. Both teams spawn in opposite corners on the bottom, you have a-flag in the center of the bottom level, b-flag in the center of the pyramid, maybe 1-3 levels above a-flag and then you have c-flag at the very top of the pyramid. Or... why not have an upside-down pyramid, a octahedron (I had to google that) or a vertical cylinder? Feel free to spitball ideas. :)

  • Probably because if you add a lot of vertical space it would add to many angles and ambush points to deal with. It would kill mobility because no one would be able to move with a couple players up high locking down the map. Think pantheon but with 360 sniper lanes instead of two. I just picked up titanfall 2 and a couple of the maps have a lot of vertical space and that's what happens on those maps.
