I get that it's always been this way, but why do the people who do worse usually end up getting the rewards? It's like giving the "Special" child in the class a cookie at the end of the day because he didn't choke to death on his own pen. The person in first usually ends up getting nothing or a rare, never seen this as a "Fair" reward system. (The only change I've noticed is in iron banner, even then it can be just as unrewarding from time to time.)
