Light Level, Equipped Light Level, and drops

Now that we're back to the festival of the lost, with masks that severely drop light level - we return to the really poor decision on Bungie that the light level drops that you get are not tied to your maximum possible light level - but your equipped light level. This is really a poor design choice. Extra Credits called Bungie out on this very issue on an episode. 3rd party apps know what the maximum light level is. It's not a hard thing to have in the game. It's a shame that a fun thing like the Festival of the Lost creates this punishing effect by having item drops be influenced because we're wearing masks. That shouldn't be the way the drops works. It's sad that load outs have to be adjusted to be what is the highest light level and not what you want to run. It's sad that this is still how the game works, when this exact issue is pretty much solved.

  • played the questline for the first day, completed and had fun, got very few rewards that were worth keeping regardless of what light they were, kept playing back at normal playing weight, thought no worries, still having fun

  • I don't have a problem equipping them for the quest, but it gave me a Xur mask as my reward that will never be used as it is pointless why lose the chance of decent rewards for 2 weeks to actually achieve nothing other than yet another Jackolyte or flight of shadows, I've had the shaders and deleted them as they are truly ghastly

  • I still don't see why masks can't have a light value at the very least.

Then there's a simple solution: Don't wear the mask. It's optional. No one is forcing you to put one on, there is no gun to the back of your head, no family member will be dismembered or killed if you don't put it on. And if you do wear it? God forbid if for one match or one strike you don't have your highest light possible. Seriously, two one-off activities is all you have to go through, and even then, for the crucible portion, you can take the mask off the moment you get your kills done, so you can still be max light by the end. And for the strike, you can put your normal helmet back on if you want to open the strike chest with a key, there is plenty of time to do so. Or does logic and thinking hurt you?

    • Its Trick or Treat dude. the "Treat" is having the pleasure of buying masks.(Guess that's a trick too) The "trick" is it lowers your LL.

        • Punishing? You talk like you are being waterboarded my friend. Wear the mask, spend an hour or two doing the quest line and suck it up with the lower LL drops. You'll be ok. Once you are done, put favorite helmet back on and enjoy your new festival 'loot'. A little personal sacrifice=profit. Or...don't put a mask on at all and not participate and continue to enjoy your high level drops. That's the beauty of it. Personal choice. ~makingsomethinggreatagain

        • So this is a little off topic, but still a part of it. Has anyone had problems with exotics and skeleton key chests decrypting/dropping at a lower level that your current light level? I've run into this a few times over the past few days and I was under the impression that smart RNG was still a thing so that every drop would be at or above your current LL.

        • Agreed. FOTL is stupid as hell. Sure Bingo take me back to 350 so I can get that sweet 350 Lutz. Then I'll just go drink some bleach

          • The game should "save" your highest level light. Using my pve gear on pvp only because of a chance to drop a thing at higher light level is stupid.

          • Just change your gear before collecting faction packs or decrypting engrams. It's just a fun mini event to get some cool stuff, with the added challenge of doing some activities as a disadvantage, kinda speaks to the whole events lore. So I'm ok with it.

Exactly It's annoying I can't play the game with whatever gear I want. If I want to get the most out of my drops, I gotta use my highest level stuff all the time. They made so many changes in the name of variety, but punish people for using weapons or armor that are a level or 2 lower than their top gear. My fusion rifle is my highest level special weapon. If I'm in the raid and want to switch to a sniper, I just lowered the level of my loot. So I gotta remember to switch back before I open the box. For me, that's easy to forget after everything that goes on during a boss fight. And a loot drop goes from being a positive thing to a "MFer" moment. I messed up just yesterday. I thought the mask went over your helmet, I ranked up with the vanguard and got 350 stuff. I've done the same thing with exotic engrams before. They should definitely fix this.

It's just a break from the norm. It's all just for fun. I have no problem with this crap not adding any light. It's not that hard to equip something before you decrypt.

              • Agreed Thanks bungie for taking the fun out of the event and thanks bungie by taking away the masks from the candy bags that's kind of sucked the fun out of repeatelty filling the bag.
