Trespasser was recently patched to fix a problem where it didn't require exotic shards to upgrade. It made me realize just how outdated the exotic shard economy is at this point in the game.
It made sense (sort of) in its inception. Having to rebuy and relevel all your exotics was dumb. Also exotics were ~~exotic~~ and special enough to warrant a new upgrade material. So upgrading your gun requires shards.
But right now they only stand as an obnoxious barrier to upgrading gear. Xur doesn't sell them and the only way to get them is to destroy other exotics and then infuse them. And you still need an exotic shard to infuse an exotic into an exotic which makes no sense from a logical standpoint.
There's also the """exploit""" of using the kiosk but since that's literally the only reasonable way of acquiring shards I do not consider it an exploit.
There are various posts on #feedback requesting xur to sell exotic shards again. And it would fix the problem for the most part but I ask: What's the point in even keeping this system? What value is left in the exotic shard other than another random upgrade material that is a pain to acquire? And why is this better than not having it?

The funny thing is, Luke Smith said they didn't like how the shard economy was "getting in the way of players using their gear" back when House of Wolves released. It's the reason they got rid of ascendant shards. It's like they just didn't apply that logic to exotics. In fact they just made it worse. Back then you needed 1 shard to push an exotic up to max level, and you never had to worry about it again. Now you need as many as it takes to infuse that item up to however high you want to go with it. You could blow 5 to 15 shards on a single item, depending on how incrementally you want to upgrade it. I think a good solution would be to slightly revert to the system from year 1 with regard to exotics. You get an exotic that drops at whatever level based on what light you currently are, and then you can spend 1 shard to automatically infuse it all the way up to the level cap. No need to sacrifice any gear. I mean it is an exotic after all. It's not a bad thing that it would allow you to gain a significant boost to your level just by equipping it. But, as a tradeoff, exotics could no longer be used as infusion fuel, because obviously everyone would have all max gear in 5 minutes if that were still possible. This would make leveling up exotics much less frustrating than it currently is, make them more rewarding to equip, and it would stop people from hoarding engrams and power-leveling on the first day of the expansion.

If Xur still sold exotic shards, then the economy would be fine. Instead, we are required to rely on the Cryptarch to give us a lucky exotic, 3oC's that has had their drop rate nerfed not once, but twice, or buying a truth off the wall to power level with motes, and break down for 1 additional shard. Have Xur sell shards again, and the problem is solved.
-
It was fine when 3 of coins dropped exotics somewhat regularly.

Keep the exotic armor pieces you like/want until you get one that is higher and has better stats. If you are trying to have all of them than you will have to manage shards. Just go get an exotic, level it up, and than break it down you don't need the perks active you just need be to be able to active them and you will get 2 shards instead of 1.
-
No point at all. It's dumb, and has been unpopular since they forced it on us in TDB.
-
It's funny reading the idiots trying to defend the exotic shard system

Edited by Nibblesonpaper8: 10/23/2016 9:23:57 PMThere's a loop hole to get free shards, I have around 50+ now. Just takes alot of glimmer
-
It makes the game last longer? Look once the story mode is done and there's no special player vs player mode going on there's not a lot to keep people playing other than the grind. And the multiple upgrade materials help slow this progression so that people don't get to max level too soon. Esp since they are only putting out new content once every 6-12 months.
-
What's the point of keeping the exotic Shard system?
To create a progression bottleneck for the playerbase. Bungie just wants us to grind more for certain things and keeping a low light level exotic and keeping it relevant by infusing regularly is supposed to be one of the struggles. Personally I dislike the current system but what can we do about it.

Busy Work! What else are you going to do?
-
So next you want it leveled up automatically upon receiving it? No shards? How about we do not work for anything in this game?
-
Laziness Bungo would have to change something And since we are the only that care they don't care to change it
-
I will only have a problem with it if they change the way the kiosk works or drop the amount of reclaimed shards from a dismantled exotic. At this point it's relatively easy to get shards.
-
You guys are so convinced there isn't logic. Holy shit, Upgrading your exotic require 2 FORMS OF CURRENCY!!!!!!!! The item, and the shard. Holy crap. Even worse, is Bungie has been doing this extended play time crap since day 1 and you guys are just realizing now that you're playing a game they are making no effort to make?
-
Agreed, exotics now are just mostly infusion material anyway as they have nerfed most of the good ones.
-
It's a terrible system, why you need a shard to upgrade an exotic with another exotic,😵 Who was told to program this in must have questioned the point also, realising they are gonna hate this.
-
It also needs a re work when infusing an exotic into an exotic. That shouldn't need a shard.
-
bump, shards are just a bizarre artificial barrier to upgrading exotics. I have a decent stockpile of shards, and yet I still will avoid infusing exotics because of the cost, so I pretty much only use one piece of exotic armor per class which sucks because I want to use everything I have to mess around with different builds, but the high shard cost prohibits that

Edited by x Silver cRoW x: 10/22/2016 8:50:27 PMYou have a great argument that I totally agree with. Unfortunately this is probably done on purpose to help inflate play time, but your right and it should be changed so exotic shards are removed.
-
they are pretty easy to get though
-
People just need everything to be SOOO easy that they hit 400 in a day and quit because the only reason they played was to get gear. Exotic shards are necessary because you aren't upgrading a legendary, it's exotic. There should be more barriers to upgrading them. It also gives you a reason to farm exotics with 3oC, otherwise what is the point? Are you that daft?
-
It also makes you use 3 legendary marks, as well. It should be marks to infuse legendaries and shards for exotics. If marks are needed to infuse exotics, I say get rid of shards altogether.

Edited by joey big guns: 10/22/2016 6:17:49 PM"Exploit"...??? Spending glimmer, a shard and motes to level a weapon up only to break it down and get one extra shard back(2 from heavy)and a couple notes of light...judges ruling 👍🏼...🤔no, no exploit there.
-
Bump. Like you said, just obnoxious.

How many exotics without using strange coins can be acquired each week
