• Hello, When downloading updates to PlayStation 4 consoles, previously downloaded content sometimes needs to be verified. If any issues are found, your platform will require the redownload of Destiny, and all previous updates. For additional information, please see our Downloading and Updating Destiny Guided Support.

    • Okay, I have done some "research" and I think this is connected to te way how patches are distributed on the PS4. There are no individual patches in the sense of Patch 1 + Patch 2 + Patch 3..., but only one huge file. When a patch is provided, the system now counter-checks all files on the PS4 with the "one size for all" patch file on the server. This is the "Preparing download" phase of the download. This is also the reason this often takes so much time, since checking 31 Gb of patch data on the really slow 5400 rpm HD of the PS4 takes its time. After that, it only downloads those parts from the huge patch file that are actually needed. This is not a bad thing per se, since it allows to update from any version to any version without problems and it allows to repair any messed up installation without having to download the whole game/DLC. I guess the problem is that in this case, that the patch system needs at least twice the space it actually requires, because it downloads the patch file, unpacks it and then later deletes the packed file. Which would also be no problem, but since the DLCs for Destiny are handled and distributed like patches and are also in the patch file, hence the size of 31+ Gb. And apparently in this case the system will not even start the process of counter-checking the local files against the patch file, since it just demands free space on the HD of twice its size right from the start, just in case. Which is indeed stupid, because when I have to constantly keep between 60 Gb and 80 Gb of my HD free, just for patches, then I really have no 500 Gb HD, have I? The system should do the counter-check and then decide how much HD space it needs. This is really ridiculous. And just as a sidenote... what is really bugging me is that the bloody system is not even telling you how much space you need for the whole process to start. Just the message "Delete unnecessary content", which is ridiculous in itself. So all my other games are "unnecessary", hm? And on what basis should I decide what to delete? With the last patch it was relatively easy, since I've deleted The Division, which I was not playing anymore anyway. But this time? I really could not tell what to delete. I have a couple of games with huge install files, which I really do not want to delete, since I am still playing those games and I have a couple of smaller games with a file size between 500 Mb and 5 Gb and I would have to delete all of them. Honestly, this crap needs to be fixed. And we all know that this will never happen.

Why in the blue hell did I need 51 GBs of free space to install this damned patch? Most people on here are saying 31 GBs or something in that neighborhood but I couldn't even start it until I cleared 50+ gigs. I spent all my potential playtime clearing space rather than enjoying the game. Destiny is the only game I have where I have to go through this -blam!-ery every time even the most minor of patches is being pushed through. Something has to change because this makes me not even want to play.

    • This Destiny update, for me, used up 31.47 GB of "Other" in PS4 application storage until update is installed. When I pause while preparing it showed as needing about 31 GB of data, or less when paused after some progress on preparing. Apparently, the PS4 is copying data to "Other" while preparing to download, and then download a small amount, just so the game/application can continue running while downloading update. When ready to install, installing free up old data and move "Other" back into the game/application. Updating may fail immediately when having less then the required free internal storage size needed to make room for "Other" in application storage. I am not sure why Destiny update need a really huge amount of "Other" in system storage, this can be a problem when having less then 30 GB of free space.

      • After cancelling, restarting with cache cleared, doing the pause download thing a bunch of times, I finally got the DL down to 221mb. Regardless, no game should require THAT much work to download a small update. Amateurs.

          • This was another pain to deal with... Cleared out a TON of stuff, then realized it might be the glitch. Sure enough cleared download list, cancelled and deleted the download, activated the game icon and on the third attempt of that... It finally triggered the download. 😑

I think it's a bug cause i was having the same issue; but after being at 10% for a couple mins, the percentage started jumping up quickly. It went from 10 to 55 in like 3 secs. Right now i'm at mid 60s and it's going up steady. edit: it finished downloading the update pretty quickly after staying at 10% for a few mins. The issue now though is while updating, the file freezes. If this happens to you, do not pause/resume, it causes the update to have to re-download again from the beginning, which happened to me, smh. edit 2: finally finished and back in the game. quick advice tip for those on ps4: after the download finishes and it's updating, just put your ps4 in rest mode for a few mins to have it install. My file was stuck while updating, put it in rest mode for like 2 mins, and it was done when i got back on. Hope this helps.

              • Updating on PS4 is total garbage. Whole reason I stopped playing FFXIV was I got sicker having to uninstall the game to trigger the correct update its time. Right now it says I'm at 99 Plus hours to run the update. I'll be on installing and finding a new game long before I wait on that lol
