Fireteam Ashen(15): Return
Looking for a different chapter? Here's the Master Post.
The Eliksni marched, stamping his feet forcefully down onto the metal floors of the Ketch with every step. His Shrapnel Launcher rested on his shoulder, and his torn and unmarked green cape swished to and fro as the Baron shoved underlings out of his way. The throne room door opened to admit Frigoris and he approached the throne, occupied by Skoriks, another Baron. Being a Baron of equal rank, Frigoris was not required to kneel before the throne, but he did nod his head in deference to his comrade. “Ah, Frigoris, you have returned at last,” The Fallen seated on the throne said to the other, “Tell me, how did the other Barons respond when they heard my plans of our salvation?” “They were skeptical, but intrigued at your plan to create a new Prime, Baron Skoriks.” Frigoris replied. Skoriks leaned forward in his seat. “And did they swear all loyalty to me?” The green armored Fallen asked. Frigoris shook his head. “Some have, but not all. I think they want to see if what you’re promising can truly be accomplished.” “Of course it can be accomplished,” Skoriks scoffed, “This isn’t the first time I’ve had to rebuild a Prime.” “You refer to your time in House Wolves?” Frigoris questioned. Skoriks nodded. He stood and paced the room, littered with bits of machinery and bannered with green cloth. “Perhaps,” Skoriks said thoughtfully as he absent-mindedly picked up a Shock Rifle, “If the remaining Barons refuse to swear their loyalty to me, then it would be appropriate for them to be left for the Bonewalkers. All they have ever caused us is the grief of infighting and weakness. We must be unified if we wish to escape exile and take back the Great Machine.” “Shall I prepare for the assassination of the other Barons, then?” Frigoris inquired. Skoriks swatted aside the question with the flick of his wrist as he implanted himself onto this throne once again. “No. That can be left up to another underling. I have another task for you.” “What do you require, my Kell?” The Fallen Baron asked. “My scouts have informed me of a Hive machine, deep in their fortress. No doubt it could be useful in our plan for redemption. I want you to lead a large force into their base, and steal all the machinery and secrets that you can. Once you return, we can build the Prime, and get our revenge, both on the other Houses and on the City of Thieves.” “It will be done, my Archon, my Kell.” Frigoris turned and exited the throne room, traveling down the Ketch’s halls and down to the main hangar. He stopped, only for a moment, to gaze at the massive shell of a dismantled Pilot Servitor, wires and parts hanging from the detached eye. / “Ugh, finally!” Avesk shouted as he materialized onto the Tower balcony. “Earth, sweet, sweet Earth!” He lay on the balcony and began to kiss the ground. “That can’t be healthy.” Joden commented as the rest of the squad appeared behind Avesk. “Ugh, look at this garbage.” Patriot said as he removed his helmet, exposing his metallic face. “This damn helmet cracked under some Boomer fire. Messed up my HUD quite a bit too. I had been saving my Vanguard marks to buy a new Scout Rifle; now I’ll have to use it for a new helmet instead. Worthless piece of crap.” He turned and drop kicked the helmet over the side of the Tower. Shaking his head angrily, he stalked away to purchase some new gear. “Well that just happened.” Validus said. “Now what?” Avesk stepped up beside him. “I do like the idea of buying some new gear,” he said, “But you and Cosmo probably need to go and see the Speaker to tell him that you’ve unlocked the Light. It’s kinda like the last part of the ritual, if you know what I’m saying.” Valid nodded his head. “Okay. Hopefully this won’t take too long. Let’s go, Cosmo.” / As the two Guardians approached the Speaker’s Observatory, they found the robed man already waiting for them. “You’ve returned, young warriors.” The Speaker stated. “I can feel that your Light is much stronger now.” Validus nodded. “Yes, we’ve both unlocked our Super abilities.” “I can see that.” The Speaker commented. “It’s interesting, to see that you both learned Arc Light first.” “Beg your pardon?” Validus asked. “Usually the first form of Light that a Hunter unlocks is Solar Light, but you’ve unlocked your Arc abilities first. Very interesting..” The Speaker replied. “And is that a good thing, or a bad thing?” Cosmo spoke up. “It is neither, just an unusual occurrence.” The Speaker answered. “In time, you will master both Arc and Solar Light, and if you are strong enough, perhaps even Void Light.” “So wait,” Validus spoke, “Hunters can master all three types of Light? What about Titans?” The Speaker hesitated before answering. “There is a Solar class of Titans, but you cannot just learn and master it.” Validus frowned. “Why not?” “The only Titans capable of wielding Solar Light are part of a heretical cult led by an exiled Guardian. Seeking out the Sunbreakers is both forbidden and impossible. I’m afraid you’ll only be able to wield Arc and Void Light.” The Speaker replied. “What!? That’s not fair!” Validus exclaimed. “It’s only because you Titans suck.” Cosmo grinned. “You’ll stop laughing when your face is caved in.” Validus shot back. The Speaker shook his head and sighed. “That’s enough, you two.” The Speaker said. “You both have completed your special training. I bestow upon you each, a Spark of Light.” The Speaker pulled two diamond-shaped glass crystals from his long sleeves. Each crystal has a small mote of Light contains inside. Validus and Cosmo each took a crystal and crushed it in their grip. The Light left the shattered remains of the crystal and merged with the Light inside their bodies, reinvigorating them both. “Thank you, Speaker.” The two Guardians both bowed, and turned to leave. As they did so, a new voice beckoned to them. “Excuse me, Guardians. Could I have a word?” The voice asked. Validus and Cosmo exchanged a glance before heading over to where the voice was originating. They came upon a man dressed in red and white. Behind him was a red wall with three white diagonal stripes near the bottom. Banners adorned with red triangles marked with the three white stripes hung from rungs near the ceiling. “I’m sorry, who are you?” Validus asked. The man in red smiled. “I’m Executor Hideo, Tower representative of the New Monarchy faction.” The man replied. He smiled sympathetically at the confused look on the two Guardians’ faces before continuing. “We’re a separate group from the City known as a ‘faction.’ Every faction has their own special goals. Ours is just to help the citizens of the City and make it a better place to live.” “Well, that doesn’t sound too bad.” Validus replied. “Why’d you call us over here?” “Well,” Hideo answered, “every new Guardian is a miracle to the City, and from what I overheard from the Speaker, you two are going to turn out to be a special bunch. If you decide to support us, we’ll in turn give you special New Monarchy stylized armor and weapons. Very stylish, and very strong.” “I’m liking the sound of this so far,” Cosmo commented. “How do I sign up?” Hideo smiled. “All you have to do is wear the symbol of New Monarchy on your cloak. As long as you’re wearing it, we recognize you as a supporter of the faction and any Vanguard reputation you earn will also go to New Monarchy. The more reputation you gain, the more the leaders of the faction will notice you and send you gifts as a reward for all the things you’ve done for us. Normally we charge Glimmer for the class items, but since you two are relatively new, I’ll give you the first one for free. Here, take them.” He said as he handed out a red and white half-cloak out to Cosmo and a red mark to Validus. Cosmo donned the cloak and Validus fashioned the mark to his waist. He nodded in thanks to Hideo. "Thanks for the mark and the opportunity." “No need to thank me,” Hideo replied, ‘I’m sure this alliance will benefit us both greatly.”
Click here for the next chapter
