Since this is #gaming and not #videogaming

Anyone here play Dungeons and Dragons? I've always been curious about it and I want some info. Also, I'll move to offtopic if you want (even though it is a game of sorts)

  • I've played and it's quite entertaining with the right people. I've made many memories with friends playing that game. If it's your first time I'd recommend using the fate system since it's much simpler than the normal systems

I play DnD, and Deathwatch. Both are extremely fun DnD is a little less complex, all you need as a player is the 5e core rulebook, which is in PDF form. The DM needs the core rulebook, the monster manual, patience, and the dungeon masters guide as well as a quest. Deathwatch requires each player to have the core rule book, rites of battle, and first founding, which can be found on a website in foreign language on the 4th-5th page of Google after searching : Free first founding PDF download I will post a homemade deathwatch greentext of my first try of deathwatch >be me, let's start deathwatch guys > spend two hours on character creation, can only use starting gear >playing starter adventure, get attacked by nids then fight hordes of rebels > going smoothly, I'm the leader, friend M is devastator, friend E is apothecary, friend D is techmarine > things start getting off track, friend D picks up dead guardsman, loots him, and carries him around with private Ryan written on his forehead > friend M tells Friend D why he isn't leader > gets back on track, attempt to liberate PDF fort >one of the three officers is suspected nid, friend m want to shoot them wiht liberated artillery >I say no, I'll stomp his face in until he tells me (I have maxed out bonuses for interrogation) >go in, about to interrogate >friend D asks "what is your protocol" >Jerold the officers says "what" >friend D calls him a liar and shoots him in the head several times >other officers useless, friend M decides to line them up and shoot them with artillery >continuing, slightly annoyed >friend D who is now the bane of my leadership decides to attach a frag to the leak shell and use it as a grenade >in small hallway in a warehouse, he gives it to Friend E, and tells him to throw it. >friend E fails miserably >throws it directly behind me >I jump on it heroically >lose all chest armor, and am almost dead >we kill the general, and I get his plasma pistol >I have been voted out of combat but still follow them >head to next objective, the governors manor >ambushed by nids, I kill 2 with only a plasma pistol and 1 health >governor saved >friend D decided to threaten the governor, removing all recourses from the table >friend M shoots the ceiling >game master decides that that was all we had time for.

  • I still dabble from time to time. Sometime in long for it when I encounter a classic DnD enemy like Beholder in a videogame rpg, or of a mace does extra damage to skeletons for example. It really is quite fun. You know how most "gamers" would call Skyrim or Fallout "not real rpgs"? Well tabletop gamers can say the very same thing about even the most detailed videogame rpg. But it does take loads of time, work and dedication to run a game. I prefer more free style storytelling campaigns but mostly tabletop gamers run pre-made campaigns.

  • Me and a group of friends have started playing recently. We started by using what are called the pathfinder rules but then we got more people and decided that we should restart our characters and see how the fifth edition rule set works out (so far 5th edition looks like it is way simpler to understand, but you do need to buy the book, cant seem to find a good pdf online). So far it is a lot of fun, though i am excited to start again with a fairly larger group. There are plenty of places online for finding a group to play with, just be careful, some people play every differently than others and it can cause problems, there are entire sections of reddit dedicated to those kinds of stories.

  • I once got into Pathfinders for a bit which is basically the same thing. I've always wanted to make up my own version because I have always loved the concept.

    • Yup. Lots of fun. Especially if everyone is drinking. Its all about having a good DM and getting into character.

    • Haven't ever played it. It seems like it would be a difficult thing to get into and pick up straight away. http://dnd.wizards.com/ would seem like a good place to start though.

        • My roommate has set up a D&D campaign for us and 6 other people, so we have a party of 8. So far we've only had one session, but I'm really enjoying it. It's not my first RPG, however. Last year we played Stars Without Number (a Sci-Fi RPG) with a smaller group. It was fun, but even though our characters were alright in the end the ending wasn't so happy. We refer to it as the "Enchilada incident."

        • You're not wrong, however, as the flood used to be the place for non-halo discussion of games, board games and tabletops alike would fall into #gaming and #offtopic OT: No, I don't do the dungeon crawl.

        • Played in two campaigns in my life. The first was a one-off in a summer camp that involved a small classroom of middle schoolers or so. Was about the local guilds in a town having a kill an evil wizard or necromancer and an approaching Orc army. A Sudden Happenstance. GMed by one of my 40k friends who works in theater, and set in the same universe a friend of his used for a campaign he's in. I told a bit about it in some DnD story threads.

          • I've played a lot of D&D, and have been the DM for a few campaigns as well. But that was all before 2006, I played once maybe twice a few years ago. But it was more house rules. I haven't read the need DM or players handbook, so if there's any major changes in don't know of them.
