Anyone here play DnD? Any tips for noobs like myself? Any certain realms of campaigns you've enjoyed playing? What's your character? Do you do everything official or do you like mixing it up with fan made content?

To start out, I recommend picking a basic class based on your preferences. If you like bashing heads in, barbarian. Magic? Traditional Mage/ wizard. Sneaky? Rogue. Tracking/long range? Hunter/ archer. Choose human as your race if you want to be a bit more flexible, or, if you have a group or you know what you want to specialize in, choose half orcs/ orcs and halflings (if you know what you are doing) work best as melee. Hunters and archers work best as elves or half elves, but gnomes work well as hunters and overall adventuring. Rogues and thieves should be gnomes, halflings, or goblins. Goblins are best here due to innate abilities. Wizards are best when either gnomes or elves. Bards can really be any race depending on what you strive for as a bard. Note that any race can be anything, and can create hybrid classes. Humans can fill in anywhere. Never forget to do perception checks, and try to be careful with unknown environments and artifacts. Try to have a bard that has a broad level of knowledge, as well as a wizard that has spell raft abilities. This info may be wrong since it is mostly anecdotal.

As a suggestion, if you're ever in the DM chair, it helps to know your players. Know the type of game they like, be able to predict how they'll do something insane, etc.

There is probably a couple groups near you. I would recommend to join one of them and get used to the game and then I would recommend going through the Giants Module. It is old, but still really good.

Get the players handbook and dm guide Read them both

I have played mtg but dnd takes way to much setup and work

Not really, in the last 16 years they've done a lot of revamping. I did give 3.0 and 3.5 a go back in 2003-2004. While good, I sort of missed my AD&D days.
