Into the Hellmouth, Part 41: I Must Know!!!!

Hello, everybody, here's part 41 of Into the Hellmouth! As usual, if you like it, give it a bump, and I'll get more out soon. Here's part 40 if you missed it, or, if you're looking for a different chapter, here's the master post! Stay classy, Guardians! The Guardians rushed about the chamber, killing thrall and dodging the Shrieker blasts. “What’s blocking the hall?” Sai shouted. “I don’t know!” Toland said. The old warlock was beginning to panic. He couldn’t die here - he couldn’t! He still didn’t know what the music was - he had to know! He had to! Toland backed up against the invisible barrier, and began to fire. A thrall slashed at him, knocking his aim, sending a bullet from his scout rifle directly into the shrieker. As he did so, he felt the barrier cave slightly. Not much - the barrier seemed to fall backwards little more than an inch - but he felt it nonetheless. Toland grinned. “Of course,” he said. He turned to his left, and quickly grabbed the thrall by the neck. He proceeded to yank out it’s vertebrae. “The shrieker!” he shouted. “Shoot the shrieker!” “What!” Eriana shouted. “Just do it!” Toland replied. Eriana finished off the thrall in front of her, and then began to shoot the shrieker. Then, came the whistling sound of a rocket. The ordinance exploded on impact with the shrieker. Pieces of metal went flying across the room, one of them slicing a thrall in twain. Omar grinned, and shouldered the smoking rocket. “Not bad, eh?” he said. “Look out, you fools!” Toland screamed. Sai looked up at the ceiling, and saw several purple orbs descending from where the shrieker had been mere moments before. One of the orbs peeled off from the main group, and started moving straight for her. Sai shot at the orb, but to no avail. Grimacing, she attempted to doge it. . . But then the orb collided with her back, sending her sprawling. “Sai!” her ghost shouted. “Sai, are you alright?” Sai groaned. She looked at her hud. Her shields had been wiped out by the blast, and her ears were ringing, but the armor didn’t show any significant damage. “Fine,” she said, picking herself up off the ground. She looked around her, and saw that the other Guardians had successfully dodged the other projectiles. “My scans show that you may have a concussion,” her ghost said. Sai killed a thrall that had been sneaking up behind her, sending several bullets into it’s chest cavity. “I feel like that’s the least of our problems,” she said. Toland put a hand through the space where the barrier had been several moments ago. He felt nothing. Toland grinned. “Barrier’s down!” he shouted. “Let’s go!” The Guardians ran forward, the screeches of thrall following them all the way. More of the hivespawn began to appear, bursting forth from the rocks. Eris looked up at the ceiling, and cursed as another shrieker opened up. “Omar!” she shouted. The hunter looked up at her. “Use your rockets!” she shouted, pointing up at the shrieker. Omar nodded, and took a knee. He grabbed the launcher off his back, and aimed at the shrieker. The rocket roared with the fury of a dragon, obliviating the shrieker in burst of explosives. Eris nodded. “Let’s go!” she shouted. The Guardians began to run forward, but the thrall began to fill the doorway, forming a new barrier for the Guardians. Eriana and Toland quickly decimated the barrier with a few well-placed solar grenades, their light burning the thralls to a blackened crisp. They ran through the doorway, and skidded to the stop at the edge of a massive hole in the floor. At the bottom of what appeared to be a roughly forty-foot drop, Eriana saw a small pool of black water. Then, she heard a loud screech from behind her, and turned around. The doorway to the passage was closing. “Come on!” Eriana shouted. Eris ran through the doorway a moment later, followed by Sai. Omar had to wait a moment in order to shoulder his rocket launcher, and then began to run forward. . . Only to have several of the projectiles from the shrieker collide with him, sending the hunter flying into the wall. “No!” Eriana and Omar’s ghost shouted in unison. Omar’s ghost began to move towards it’s Guardian, only to catch another projectile on it’s shell. The small sphere went flying. Eriana, Eris, and Sai ran towards the door, only to watch them close as they were inches away from the hallway. The last they saw of Omar was a prone form, lying against the wall. “No!” Eriana shouted. “No, no no no no!” The Guardians banged on the door, tried to wrench it open, shot at it, and even tried to blow it up in desperation. But the door remained as solid and and impenetrable as stone. Toland watched the Guardians desperately attempt to rescue their lost companion. Then, he went to the opposite side of the room, and took out his journal. He began to speak into it. “I still am at a loss to explain the mysterious song that I heard earlier,” he said, “but I have developed a few theories. However, they may require testing, and I am loathe to sacrifice my companions. But what is this song! What is this power that the Hive posses! I must now, and by my light, I swear that I, Toland, shall never rest until I know the truth of it! I will find this power, and I will understand it, even if it kills me!” With that statement, he let out a crude chuckle. “Ironically, it probably will,” he said.
