Into the Hellmouth, Part 46: Even Gods Can Bleed

Hello, everybody, here's Part 46 of Into the Hellmouth! As usual, if you like it, give it a bump, and I'll get more out soon! Here's Part 45 if you missed it, or, if you're looking for a different part, here's the master post! Stay classy, Guardians! Eris clenched her teeth as she ran towards the beast that had killed her friends. In the background, she was aware of the shrieks of wizards, the roars of knights, the screeches of thrall, and even the distorted, blackened language of the Hive. But slowly, the noise disappeared, fading into static as it reached her ears. Soon, the only sound she heard was the sound of her breath, and the thump of her boots on the ground. She watched as the beast in front of her grew closer. . . and closer. . . and closer. . . “Raaaahhh!” Crota swung his sword down at her, and she blocked it with her own blade. She felt the tremors from the impact reverberate down the blade, sending spasms into her arms. Crota lifted his twenty-foot blade, and swung at her midsection. Eris managed to get her sword up just in time, but the force of the blow sent her sprawling, and flung the word from her grasp. Eris lay on the ground, clutching her her wrist in pain. “Uhng. . .” Her ghost materialized next to her. “Eris!” it said. “Are you alright?” Eris groaned. “No,” she said. Her ghost flicked it’s gaze to her hand. “Every bone in your wrist is shattered,” it said. “I’ll have to heal it.” Eris looked up, and saw Crota approaching. “Do it,” she said, “quickly!” She looked to her right, and saw the sword lying several feet away. Grimacing, she crawled towards it, pulling herself along with her uninjured hand. But no matter how fast she moved, Crota was faster. He stood next to her, raised his sword above her head, and prepared to bring it down. And then Eriana swung parried the blow, diving in front of Eris. Crota roared with frustration, and prepared to swing at this new challenger, only to have the next blow blocked as Sai joined the fray. Eris stared at them for a moment, until she heard her ghost say, “You’re healed up!” Eris barely wasted a second before grabbing the sword, and taking a swing at Crota. The Hive Prince blocked the blow, but then disengaged in order to fend off a blow from Sai. The three Guardians stepped back, and the faced the beast, swords at the ready. Eris looked over at Sai. “Are you with us?” she asked. Sai nodded. “Always,” she said. And then, the three Guardians went on the attack. * * * Despite his immense strength and nigh on a billion years of experience, Crota quickly realized that he was at a disadvantage. The Guardians displayed a remarkable dexterity with the sword, and they had him outnumbered, three to one. Every time one of the Guardians struck, he had just enough time to parry the blow before disengaging to stop the next strike, leaving him with no time to attack. And even then, he still suffered wounds. Most of them were mere scratches, but each strike chipped away at his strength, little by little. It occurred to him then that there was a real possibility that he might loose this battle. Then, a searing pain tore through his leg. * * * Eriana grinned savagely as she pulled the blade from Crota’s right leg. She quickly distanced herself as the Hive prince made a drunken swing at her, and roared with pain. “It seems that even Gods can bleed,” she said. Crota took several stumbling steps forwards, and then grunted as Sai shoved her blade into his side. Then she retreated, leaving the blade buried up to the hilt in his abdomen. Crota took one teetering step, and then fell to his knees - just as Wei-Ning had when Crota had slain him on Luna’s barren surface. Then, he leaned forward, resting one hand on the ground. Eriana grinned. She walked up to the Hive Prince, and spoke. “Well, Crota,” she said. “Is this not a reversal of fortunes?” Crota made no move to respond. “Once, you stood where I do now, and slew one of the greatest men that I have ever known,” she continued. “You killed us - butchered us by the thousands!” She paused, the anger flowing through her voice like a river of fire. “You call yourself a God, I am told - you believe that you have are the sole sovereign of this world. Well, Crota.” She paused. “Time to put you in your place.” She raised the sword above her head, and was surprised to find a single tear streaking down her face. “For Wei,” she whispered. She prepared to bring the sword down. . . And then an ear-splitting scream filled the chambers. Eriana winced, instinctively clamping her hands over her ears to try and quell the noise. However, the sound still continued to penetrate her eardrums. Eriana felt the blade in her hand begin to vibrate, and soon, the blade shattered, leaving her clutching a broken hilt. The scream stopped. Eriana took her hands away from her head, and realized that the same thing had happened to Eriana’s sword. She grimaced, and then looked to her left. What she saw gave her the chills. A large host of Hive - Acolytes, thrall, wizards, and knights - was advancing on them. At their head was a wizard, floating several feet above the ground. They stopped about forty feet away from the Guardians. The wizard cocked her head at them, and Eriana heard a booming voice in her head. Crota is a God, it said, because he is the keeper of the Law - the One True Law - the Sword Logic. For all who do not follow the Sword Logic do not follow the One True Way. They break the most basic rule of nature. And must therefore be destroyed. Eriana turned around to see Crota stand up, and grab the hilt sticking out of his side. With a grunt, the Hive Prince pulled the blade out, and then cast it aside. Eriana turned back towards the wizard. “Who are you?” she whispered. The wizard raised her arms. I am Omnigul, she said, Will of Crota! She lowered her arms. Now die, nonbelievers! And with that, the wizard rained down arc energy upon the three Guardians.
