Even if it is a signal from an alien civilization, it'll take nearly 200 years to get a response from them.

When they come here and learn what happened to Harambe, humanity will be screwed.
-
I like how they jump from "mysterious signal" to "aliens." I'm sorry, but the skeptic in me urges me to acquire more evidence than, "SETI discovers confirmation bias." Or maybe it was just the author of the article who worded it as fact. Either way.

They are going to send us a picture of Hitler
please someone understand that reference
Edited by The Cellar Door: 8/30/2016 5:40:59 PMAnd this is one of the reasons I, as someone working towards being in the field, hate pop-sci. Pop-sci media outlets over inflate shit and jump to conclusions about random fluctuations in some measurement all the time, and people think it's reliable information because they've dubbed themselves as "science." Here's a protip: a ground-based telescope is not going to find aliens. Done deal. There is simply too much shit in the way. Sorry for being curt, but this pop-sci meme is actually very annoying for someone who actually cares about this shit.

Clickbait title

Edited by DogChamp: 8/30/2016 11:33:15 PMIt's possible that if it is from extraterrestrial life the species that sent it could be extinct.

Please don't let it be the Covenant.

Kang and Kodos are here and are running for President.

We've woken the hive!

This has happened so many times that I didn't even have to read the article to know it'll be disproven.

They are saying the memes are too strong and if you don't stop they will destroy the universe
-
They are trying to tell us to stop pointing our efing loud radios at them

Edited by Lukas: 8/31/2016 9:31:10 AMIsn't SETI a thing in spore?

You have found the Elliksni, guardian... Be ready

Should be titled "SETI needs more funding so......Aliens"

Ayy lmWow!

If it was real the government would have taken this article down and killed everyone who read it
In one out of 39 scans that passed over star showed a signal at about 4.5 times the mean noise power with a profile somewhat like the beam profile. Of course SETI@home has seen millions of potential signals with similar characteristics, but it takes more than that to make a good candidate. Multiple detections are a minimum criterion. Because the receivers used were making broad band measurements, there's really nothing about this "signal" that would distinguish it from a natural radio transient (stellar flare, active galactic nucleus, microlensing of a background source, etc.) There's also nothing that could distinguish it from a satellite passing through the telescope field of view. All in all, it's relatively uninteresting from a SETI standpoint.
They'd cover it up if it was actually aliens

How did you find this article? It's fascinating, man. Do you have an interest in this stuff?
