Can someone please explain why everyone runs 5 armor? Do you take more damage in gun fights if you're not at 5 armor?
Edit: Does anyone know how much armor chest pieces that have the node "Increased armor when using a (element) based subclass" gives you?
Edit 2: So I am now very confused. I thought armor maxed at 10. Is the middle of the armor bar not 5?
Edit 3: Does the ATS/8 Tarantella hunter chest piece give you more than 1 armor?
Edit 4: http://i.imgur.com/NBhpVVV.jpg
According to this link the difference between 1 armor and 5 armor is 7HP, besides living a trip mine, would this 7HP play a role in gun fights?
Edit 5: Thanks for all the help everyone. This has really opened up my eyes to better builds I can do in the Crucible.

Yes, it does make a difference. Many guns are made to kill with exactly 200 damage (your health is 200 when you have 10 armor) for example: last word 2 head one body/the four body shot 75 75 50 = 200 The medium rof handcannons (Eyasluna, lord high fixer, finellas peril)- one head two bodies 86 86 57 = 200 Hawksaw/Suros pdx 45- the 3 tap 75 75 51 (each shot doing 25 per crit 75 together or 17 body 51) = 201 Mida 3 head one body w max impact 57 57 57 38 (Bungie has stated all numbers that appear as damage are rounded and not perfectly accurate) = 200 Shoulder charge = 200 Flux grenade 122 79 = 199 Tripmines = 188 Basically weapons are balanced damage wise so that they all have a relatively similar time to kill and so the damage output for this is approximately 200. Having 11 or 12 armor stat allows you to survive things like this (with 10 giving you 200, 11 giving 206, and 12 210 hp respectively) all things above are some of the most commonly used weapons/examples why high armor is very useful in pvp :-) hope this helps

psh, max armor is a waste imo you can't tank a snipe to the head from any archetype, a sticky still kills you, you can't tank any supers....it doesn't change the shots to kill of nearly every weapon you get an extra 10 pts of life or some insignificant # like that it's basically 1 extra doctrine bullet to the body lol
-
Depending on whether I'm shooting at you or your shooting at me. Then you have max armour to the max and I'm wearing bullet magnetised tissue paper.
-
There are those times when they are left with a sliver of health that you have to wonder.
-
In Trials I use a Striker with max armor and unstoppable equipped. With those equipped I can survive a direct hit from a nova bomb while mid-fist of havoc.
-
I have survived being stuck with a fusion grenade with medium high armor on my sunsinger without the ram
-
I think the only ones that can make a difference with full armour is striker defender and warlock with ram cose they a can survive shoulder charge and I think u may need an extra shot from an auto rifles for a kill,,
-
It only really matters for the difference between getting killed faster by high impact hand cannons and maybe pulses. It's negligible for everything else.
-
If you don't want to be two shot by first curse..... yeah.
-
Low armors get 2 shotted by the first curse and judith D
-
Mostly in PvE the PvP use is limited.

Well, the max armor you can have is 12, that's if you're a Titan or warlock though. Titan can get 12 armor as the striker with chest piece upgrades and unstoppable and I believe that's it. Warlock must be voidwalker, with angry magic, max armor stats, chest piece and ram. Hunter can get up to I think ten is the max with max armor stat and chest piece. 10 armor equals out to basically 200 health, 11 armor is about 206 health, and 12 armor is 210 health. So 11 armor or better is required to survive a shoulder charge (rip hunters), in most gun fights armor can make a difference. For example at optimal range last word does 50 to the body, usually a four shot kill. Unless you have 11 or 12 armor. Typically MiDA is not affected, 55 to the head, 55x4 is 220. Doctrine is probably affected by a couple shots. Etc. Most hand cannons will always three shot as long as one shot is a headshot, however I have encountered moments where two body one headshot doesn't kill a 12 armor Titan, so that is debatable.

A guardian has 200 health base
-
It did, once, but not anymore. Remember, balance means, aesthetic. 'Looks don't kill' in a war.

Edited by kindaSketch: 8/27/2016 4:32:12 PMIt's minimal. Other day a guy kept one shotting me with trip mines. I raised my armor to max. And was able to survive with a sliver of health. If I'm not mistaken your armor that you wear dictates how much more general base armor you get or against a specific kind of attack. Eg extra armor or extra void splash dmg only. Correct me if I'm wrong.
-
It will mean one less bullet from low impact guns and might make a difference in rare cases with really high damage occasions. (For example, I saw a video of someone stacking weapons of light, crowd control, etc on a max impact handcannon and doing like 196 precision damage.) I do remember playing trials against a low light team once. They were both hunters at 290-ish and 305 light. I could 1-shot body shot (using black spindle) the hunter with 305 but yet not the 290ish one, so I can only assume it was an armor stat difference.

You can survive Shoulder Charge with enough armor
-
I run max recovery, mid agility... low armor. I don't plan on dying
-
Voidwalker+Ram=enough defense to barely survive a Shoulder Charge.
-
I run max armor on my hunter with void armor but that is personal choice
-
Yes. Max armour lets you survive 2 body 1 head from eyasluna or thorn. Also blade dancer stickies. I also think 2 hs bursts from messenger and 3 hs bursts from grasp. Shoulder charge. Helps against shotguns and lets you take more from body shot switch to your primary snipers. There's more but it is very useful.
-
I could be wrong but I understand the stats as follows: Armor - This is your blue bar or shield and how much damage each can take. High armor will take more hits to kill you. Regeneration - This is how quickly your life and armor/shield bar starts to regen. This stat is meaningless if you don't find cover to let it work. Agility - This is your overall movement (acceleration in jumps, how fast you turn, your weapon handling, melee, etc.) I think all stats are only as important as the build you use them in. So a high armor sniper may not see as much benefit as a high armor shotgun rusher. Unless you are the one off guy that stands in the open taking and giving shots lol. Perks/Abilities = Build Build = Strategy Destiny = Warlock Master Race

Armor doesnt make a huge difference unless you are completely stacked. Like a voidwalker with the ram full armor and a void boost it still doesnt make a huge difference but you can tank shoulder charge and tripmine and things like that but 1v1 with primaries it wont make enough difference.
-
To me, no. I can have max armor with 2 pieces of gear that increase it even further and everything still kills me damn near instantly. But I can be shooting at someone who has minimum to hardly any armor and they just soak it up like a cotton shirt at a water park.
-
Armor basically equates to health. The more of it you have the more health you have, and thus the more damage you can take before dying. The differences between numbers is not that great so like as an example if you 5 armor or 8 armor you're still going to going to be 3 shot from a Hand Cannon, so that extra 3 armor is going to waste. As such it's better to give that to a different stat. I don't really know that much about specific numbers but i'm guessing that below 5 you start getting killed in less bursts.

There is a reason max armor on Titan is banned in sweats
