Destiny: Legend Untold, Chapter 1

Chapter One: Waking Up All I remember from the instant before waking is pain and darkness, then a light filled my view with a brilliant flash. My vision returned slowly, starting with dark blurs that formed into solid objects. It was desolate; metal crates and the remains of a couple of houses, all broken and covered in rust, bushes and vines coating the ground and walls and creeping through holes, I was currently inside what seemed to be half of a building. But what captured my attention was a little machine floating in front of me. It looked like a metal sphere surrounded by rigid, blocky, and pristine white pieces, a small glowing eye gazing at me from a screen on the sphere. It began to speak, it's voice slowly growing louder, and I realized that my hearing was coming back. "Hello," it said, "I am your Ghost" "My ghost?" I asked. "Okay, I'll explain everything I can but you probably won't understand at first, you've missed a lot." "Where are we? Why can't I remember anything?" "We're in a place called the European Dead Zone. You've been dead for a long time, and now you're a Guardian; my Guardian." "Why is it a dead zone? And what do you mean by guardian?" "You ask a lot of questions, just let me explain, we don't have long so you need to let me tell you what's important." "Okay." "The Traveler is a moon-sized machine that came to your solar system and brought life and innovation to your kind long ago. Awhile after that, the Darkness came and we fought to defend the Traveler and the Light. There is now only one safe place left on Earth, and I will take you there. The Traveler was hurt badly during the fighting and now sleeps. Before she gave her last breath, the Traveler created the Ghosts. There are many like me and we all search around the dead to find the one specific person we were meant to bring back to fight, which we call Guardians. I was made to bring you back; I am your Ghost and you are my Guardian, and you must defend the Light and all those who live under it, thus the name Guardian was given to the first of you when your purpose was realized." "So I was dead... What killed me?" "I don't know, you could have died during the Collapse, the Golden Age, or even further back." "So you don't know who I am?" "No." "Okay, so where's this city you were talking about?" "The Last City, the only place the Traveler can still protect. It's on Earth, but we have a long way to travel and the path is filled with ho-" A distant, inhuman shriek cut off the Ghost. "Hostiles..." The Ghost finished, "We need to move. If you see anything that looks skeletal or has three to four eyes, run or fight." "What the heck are we fighting?" "Fallen and the Hive, you'll find out what they are soon enough. We need to find you a weapon and some mode of transportation." I nodded and headed towards the nearest hole in the wall, peaking out and making sure nothing was waiting outside. After I was sure I ran out and crossed a busted up street and flattened myself against the vine coated wall of an adjacent building. My Ghost floated after me and said, "Wait up, I forgot something. Okay, hold still, I'm going to enter your armor matrix." It flew straight at me but disappeared in a flash right before contact. That's when I looked down and realized I was wearing a full set of armor. The Ghost's voice interrupted my thoughts. "Hey, can you hear me?" "Yeah. You're in my armor then? Connected to my armor? And did I die in this armor?" "Yes, I'm sort of connected to you're gear. And no, I put this armor on you whenever I revived you. And NO, I didn't dress you, I can make armor and weapons in our inventory appear or disappear at will. Speaking of..." A helmet appeared on my head in a flash that resembled the way my Ghost disappeared. "There. Mothers always say never to participate in any sports or extremely dangerous combat situations without a helmet on." His voice now came from the com in my helmet. I'm gonna say he because it has a male voice. I laughed at that and responded with, "Safety first. But why don't you have a gun for me?" "Hey, they're harder to come by, you're lucky I have a complete set of armor for you." I sighed, "Fair enough," then began the run to the next building, keeping to the shadows. • • • For the next few hours I continued the race from building to building, never encountering anything but kept on edge by the sound of objects being sifted through and strange chittering noises. "Ghost," I asked after stopping inside a doorway hidden in shadows, speaking quietly so I couldn't be heard outside my helmet, "What are we dealing with here?" "This area is under Fallen control," my Ghost replied, "They are scavengers and are what have been making all the chatter and such that you've heard. I don't think describing them to you any further will be of any use, seeing them would be better. I'm honestly surprised we've avoided their attention for so long. Oh, and most of the Fallen have four arms, so be careful in close quarters." "Great, now I can't beat them at pattycake." I paused for a moment, wondering how I knew what pattycake was. It wasn't in my memories, the reference to the game and the knowledge of it just appeared there, with no experiences attached. "That is an ancient human game, how do you know about it?" My Ghost asked. "I don't know, I guess I must remember it from before I died." "Interesting... Come on, we need to keep moving." I continued on to the shadow of the next building and changed the subject. "This used to be a city. What happened to it?" "The Collapse. When the forces of Darkness came they destroyed every human colony on every planet we inhabited, killing everyone there. They eventually pushed us back to Earth and soon just to the Last City. We don't even control our own moon..." "How many made it to the safety of the City?" "Barely any, but the population has grown a good deal since the early days of the City. The population isn't nearly as big as the population of the Earth alone during the Golden Age, though." As the Ghost finished I looked around the corner of the building I currently hid behind and stopped dead in my tracks. They had reached what used to be a highway, and it was littered with beat up, rusted cars and the skeletal remains of dozens, maybe even hundreds, of the city's former inhabitants. "So much death..." I whispered, gazing out at the strewn bodies. "Yes, the Collapse took its toll on humanity. Steel yourself Guardian, you will see far more carnage in this new life. The bodies of the Light's children and those of its enemies." I began slinking my way across the wide highway, using cars as cover. "The thought of all this killing sickens me." I told my Ghost. "You will see comrades fall. None of you will die in vain; going down fighting for those you care about seems like the best way to go out to me." He replied. "I agree with tha-" I began to say, but my Ghost cut me off. "I've located a gun," he said, "near that rusty old crate a ways to your right." I turned and walked towards it, and sure enough there was a rifle laying a couple of feet away from it. Picking it up, I weighed it in my hands and checked out the mechanisms and optics. A light shown from my Ghosts eye, scanning the weapon. "That's a scout rifle," he said after a couple seconds, "it's single-fire and meant for mid- to long-range combat. Since you obviously haven't used a gun in awhile I'm gonna help guide your aim using your helmet's display, and I'll even help after you've gotten used to combat." I raised the gun up and pointed it straight ahead of me, and my Ghost formed a crosshair display showing exactly where I was aiming. I turned a bit and moved my aim around to get a feel for how the crosshair moved in my visor screen, but stopped when it fell across something that moved. I lowered my gun slowly and gazed at the creature standing among the cars a ways down the street. It had a small and almost human frame, wore a red helmet, had four beady eyes, and wielded a small gun in one hand and a knife in the other, and it was staring right back at me. ___________________________________ Link to ToC:https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/212710816/0/0 Link to chapter 2: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/209968073/0/0
