Character level should be XP-based, not gear-based.

Am I the only one who hates how leveling up works in Destiny? You hit Level 40, and then the only way to get to a higher level is by equipping Legendary gear with enough Light to boost you up. It's especially irritating when you unlock a new weapon or piece of armor that you want to use, and it brings down your light level when you equip it unless you have something to infuse it up to the same level as the rest of your weapons and armor? Why can't we just level up by gaining XP, just like what we do when getting from Level 1 to 40. Earn experience, your level goes up, and your Attack and Defense values for all weapons and armor are brought up to match your current level. Ergo, if I'm level 320 and I level up to 321, all of my gear that was previously 320 Attack/Defense scales up to 321 Attack/Defense. I'm thinking that for Year 3, they should allow us to level up through earning XP; our level would be determined by our highest-level gear for each character. So, if you're 335 when the 3.0 Update drops, you'd still be 335... and you'd be able to level up to 400 by grinding XP rather than having to buy new gear. What do you think?

  • Bungie isn't the first to use this method FF:XIV uses this ,first 60 levels of XP,then 245 iLvL's which are determined by what gear you have on at the time

I disagree. You've mentioned our XP grind from 1-40. This is our rank that tells us what we've mastered. Our light level is an accumulative of our gear which is basically like a person (130 light) with no armor or weapons compared to someone being geared up and gaining higher armor for defense and weapons for offense (up to 335 light). Take the gear off? You're basically in casual wear or light armor. Level 40 is max rank. It was supposed to allow us to have more gear options but realistically everyone wants to have max light level as well. Everyone always wants to be equipped with their most powerful gear. It's a status symbol to strut the tower in 335 gear. Overall character level determining your damage doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Upgrading a weapon or using a higher powered weapon should be what allows you to deal more damage.

  • Then no one would play end game activities, there would be no point to doing the raid. The weapons are crap so no other incentive.

  • I think there's a lot more problems to worry about then how you level up. It's been this way since day 1.
