I need somone to clear somthing up for me. I have a Bellsouth Fastaccess DSL internet connection, which SHOULD be at least a 256k connection. I only looked really hard for the first time today, and from what I've gathered, this means that I should receive files to my CPU at least 256kb/s, right?
However, the test file my friend is sending me now over AIM file transfer says 26k/s, and its been coming in steady at that same speed for the past hour. This download rate is worse than a 56k modem users, isn't it? Can somone please tell me how to optimize my connection?

The worst ISP ever. .. .. AOL, they are the biggest piece of -blam!- anyways, your Downloads will never download at your full connection if your on 1mb you should download at aroun 100 - 120kbps aas for your 256kb, get rid its a piece of crap. the reason it doesnt download at your full speed is because your computer may be using other resources which are connected to the internet, although it really depends on what site you can download at, at fileplanet i can download at the full 8mbps

With AIM the download rate is sometimes throttled by the AIM program itself. Dont ask me why!

my DSL is 512kb connection and i cant get cable at my house but it downloads at about 50kb/sec which im sure is slow but to me is quite cool seeing as i just came from dial up.

when it says you're downloading at 26k, its probably in kilobytes. however, 256kps is 256 kiloBITS per second. there are 8 bits in a byte, so logically you should download at 32kilobytes. however, due to various factors, the kilobyte number ends up being closer to 1/10th of the kilobit number. hence my 1500kps downstream, 256kps upstream connection downloads at around 150 kilobytes a second at uploads at around 25kilobytes a second. I only have 1 meg/s, it sucks, because it usually only about 256k/s because its the only internet in NZ with the ability to play XBL.

Nothing I can think of. Call your ISP and ask them about it. You really should get cable though (no matter what it takes). I don't know what I'd do without a 6 meg downstream connection (soon it will be 8 meg connection! :D). [Edited on 9/12/2005]

Tell me about it, I know Bellsouth sucks, Ive put up with them for years. Still, 256k would be the crap if i had even that. I'd love to get cable, I just can't afford it.... :( Anyway, can you tell me if there is a way to boost my download rate at all? Cause I should be getting more than 26k, thats just bull-blam!-.

Bellsouth is a POS. Get cable. 256kb is worthless compared to a good 3 or 4mbps. He can't upload as fast since the connection is asymmetric.
