As the title suggests, Religion is merely an answer for people that don't know what happens after death, and how we came onto Earth in the first place. I'm willing to bet over half the people who are religious in the world need religion to answer the questions that modern science(s) cannot theoretically tell as of right now. Such as our overall existence, life after death, and any other potential questions someone might have.
Prove me wrong

Edited by The Watcher: 5/1/2016 2:07:42 AMI see an error or two, or three here. This argument isn't even completely logical. You put all who are religious in an either-or situation. Saying that they have to turn to religion for answers that "modern science" has not come to yet. Thus, the whole statement/theory of religion being just an answer to life's question is an either-or fallacy. I don't have to be a Christian just to find out how the universe got here. I could just sit and think, or turn to another religion, or study, or just completely ignore it. You also make the assumption that people turn to religion for just answers. You can speak face to face with many converted people, and it isn't just so they can become rich, or stop smoking drugs, or find the meaning to life. Religion can also be hereditary, or out of 'revelation'. I'm also sick of this identical atheistic contention being used everywhere. Find something new for me to analyze.

I praise the sun? Does the sun exist? Yes it does, it right there in space. Checkmate atheist, christains, Jews and Muslims.

As atheists on this forum have been quick to remind people in the past... You are making the claim. You provide the evidence. This claim also makes a grand total of zero sense. While several commonly held belief systems include nice, happy version of an afterlife, many don't. If you are going to comfort people against a fear of death, you aren't going to make a terrible place that sucks. You aren't alleviating any fear by doing that. For instance: Pagan Greek faiths. While Elysium has been toted as some sort of heaven, if you check several ancient Greek texts (such as the Odyssey- See Achilles' response to Odysseus when Odysseus checks in on the afterlife), the afterlife is seen as an awful place. Judaism also has a similar crappy afterlife (sheol). Very few Jewish figures actually go to a paradise (in the strict confines of Jewish beliefs). On the whole, there is very little teaching in Judaism about an afterlife. Doesn't seem to be a very good assurance against an afterlife. Deism is similarly non-speculative (although Deism is more of a general concept belief than an actual system). Fact is, while the afterlife is an important component of many religions, it is by no means the only reason for religions to exist, and only a fool would claim it is the reason that religion exists.

Edited by LoneBarrel: 5/1/2016 2:07:45 AMMany people are arfraid of the unknown. To calm this fear they join a religion or don't and make thier own explaination of what happens after death. So they can have an idea of what to expect or what will happen when they die. Do you have to join a religion not really. You can belive what ever you want whether that it us in a relgion ot not.

We are so small we cannot fathom our own existence, our cause, or where we'll end up. That's why we creat this father figure (God) to give us the baby answers to life. -dad, where do universes come from? "I make them, son" -wow dad, you're so cool!
-
except many religious people embrace the idea of death and explore the unknown
-
Everyone is scared of death or the unknown. And the Lord can also be considered as the unknown, as we've never seen Him before. So, answer me this; if we're scared of the unknown, why are we followers of Christ?
-
That would be the purpose of religion, yes. Telling people what the meaning of life is. Way to go, you stated the obvious.

I'm only scared of dying before I am ready because I am only 19. Once I have grown and had a family and seen places I've wanted to go and accomplished many things I need to be able to look back on my life like it was a success and I mattered to the people around me. Then I can die and no religion is ever going to help me with that.
-
I'm scared of death because I'm scared to die and no religion is gonna change that. And before you ask, I'm not scared because I don't know what's gonna happen after it, I'm seriously just scared of dying itself.
