I don't think people realize what Bungie is working with here. They are a medium-small studio. They make some good games but that takes them YEARS. They don't have the money or staff to make Taken King level DLC every 3-4 months...unless you're okay with Destiny 2 coming out near the next turn of the century. Bungie also likely pays their employees well. Why? Because happy employees churn out better quality work. Also because to get the level of programming skill and graphic/sound/techie prowess that they want (it's a high bar), and then work that individual to the bone (everyone knows the game industry is crunch time, all the time), you should pay them enough to feel their work is valuable. The money to pay them has to come from somewhere. The money to hire more of them has to come from somewhere. The money everyone thinks Bungie has to pay these people (from the Activision deal) has probably already been spent paying the last few years wages, bonuses, and the sinkhole you better believe Destiny 2 is in terms of raw financial investment. So they take a new strategy. Incremental updates as a sub for DLC. Take everything they would release for a year and break it into chunks. They pull some of their Destiny vets to make improvements and additions to the game in small, manageable chunks. They know holding special events is a great perk of gaming, so they do those to: IB, trials, SRL, Crimson Days, Halloween, Christmas, etc. Then they realize the money had to come from somewhere to handle all this production. Enter Sliver; a way for Destiny enthusiasts to get some nice aesthetic perks for their financial contributions to making Destiny work. And as a kickback? They hope selling Silver to these enthusiasts will be enough to fund the production of these events and updates they want to put in. Everyone gets a free ride on the gravy train regardless. Now, don't get me wrong; the system isn't perfect. No one likes RNG purchases, but the fact of the matter is no one can fault them for it: companies have been doing it for years (remember MTG, Pokemon, YuGiOh, HeroClix, etc?), and having only a chance to get something psychologically causes it to have more worth to those who get it as opposed to just buying it. It creates scarcity, which causes desire to grow and business (usually) to flourish. It's a revenue driver--one the makers of this game need to keep up the financial constraints of developing new content for an old game while still developing the next big thing. I think that when you add in the fact that much of this content is now attainable without even spending cash (emotes now drop, a couple sterling packages are free every week for the even mildly motivated), I don't think people should be complaining about not getting all the Silver-related stuff RIGHT NOW, FOR FREE. The game isn't free. The fact that all these people with 1000's of hours sunk in still come here and complain, then proceed to go sink another 8 hours a day into it prove you've already gotten what you paid for. Everyone knows Destiny's dev path wasn't roses, but they pulled it off and at the sacrifice of some of what they wanted to put in but couldn't due to time and financial constraints, they still put out a game that has really gotten better with age. They are a testament to others of how to not abandon a game that flops out of the gate. They had confidence the game was gonna be great, and they've made great strides towards getting it there. Imagine getting everything they've put out since Y1 in a bowtied package now/later this year for $30 bucks instead of for FREE over the course of the year. I've experienced everything this game has to offer in terms of gameplay without spending a dime in Y2. So please, stop complaining about Silver; it's not throwing off your favorite weapon's ttk, or making that Titan eat a whole clip and keep standing, or giving other players access to other game modes because they spent Silver. You just want MORE. But more isn't free.
