I personally think that companies should worry less about making a game look really good graphics wise, and instead put more work into gameplay and mechanics, what do you guys think? Are good graphics holding back a games full potential?

  • Graphics aren't killing them, just studios unwilling to take risks to make a game that isn't "Action hero man kills all the bad guys with billions of guns" is.

    • Graphics themselves? No, that's rediculous. Amount of focus on graphics? A little bit. Should go way down.

    • Don't starve or Rocket League are excellent games that use simple graphics. Graphics don't make a game. They can be nice accents, though. Devs shouldn't focus on graphics to the exclusion of gameplay

    • I just want everyone to stop calling games they don't like casual games.. apparently everyone is an MLG gamer now and only has time for what they consider real games lmao. All these posts will revolve around whatever is dropping at the given point in time, and any other games will be shitted on because the community has found another word to use incorrectly.

      • Nah tbh fams. The best looking/performing games of the current gen have plenty of Gameplay, and in the cases where good looking games suck, it's not a case of Graphics being prioritised over Content. Destiny was gutted before launch, and Halo 5's lack of split screen can be blamed solely on the idiot who decided to make the engine have frame-dependent physics.

      • If you want an example of what impact graphics have on games, look no further than the Elder Scrolls series. High end graphics drastically reduce how much can be displayed onscreen at any given time. Just look at how many items you can have equipped at a time in Skyrim then Morrowind. Skyrim: 4 head chest boots gloves Morrowind: 12 head cuirass shirt greaves pants boots left glove right glove left shoulder right shoulder robe belt If the next Elder Scrolls game's graphics is somewhere between Oblivion and Skyrim, We could probably go back to having this many item slots for our characters. To me, that seems like a decent trade off.

            • Devs just shouldn't focus on graphics. 1080P 60FPS isn't an "oh my God" it's an expectation at this point. 2016 man.

            • Depends. It likely takes up a lot more development time and money that could be used elsewhere, but it all depends on the developer.

They are killing RPGs for sure. All these action - RPG hybrids are a mockery of traditional RPGs. Worry more about kewl SFX and less about quality gameplay / story / progression. I think they are going to mess up FF15, and even more importantly FF7 remake.

No. Games end up bad when devs let them become bad, rather through lack of effort, greed or more commonly nowadays both, graphics aren't an exception when we have games like Bloodborne, Fallout 4, Last of Us, Witcher 3, etc

Better graphics ultimately equals less shit. That's why Fallout only has eh graphics and why Halo 5 doesn't have split-screen.

                • IMO it's part of the reason, Better graphics means more time spent creating the world and that means more development costs are dedicated to that, in turn the publisher needs to ensure they recoup the money they invested so they have more say in what goes into the game those decisions will most likely be favouring the business side of things than the gaming side then you have the target audience that has to be as many people as possible that means niche games will be left for indie devs and to be honest I hate that, I hate that our passion has become nothing more than the soullessness that is "business". I'm waiting for the day it's AAA games are no better than the Mobile market hell just look at the money it makes, it's already started with meaningless " in-game currency" added to Games that never had it before, a lot more cosmetics are for sale (ironically these would've been part of a mini game or completing the challenge modes/the game 10 or 15 years ago) I may have gone off topic slightly but I feel the soul of Gaming slipping aware thanks to corporate greed.

                • I'm fine with good graphics as long as they aren't detrimental to gameplay. Such as frame rate drops during boss fights and the like. Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, are near the sweet spot with very nice looking graphics, while preserving gameplay. Both games do suffer from frame rate drops in certain situations. The worst of which can make some areas unplayable, such as a chalice dungeon with 3 witch things, summoning 9 of those unpleasant hints with the scythe hands... The visual effects from all that dipped in the the single digits and left me struggling to move, much less fight. Destiny went with some middle of the road graphics, but has stellar gameplay throughout. Even with all the craziness that can happen on screen, I've rarely ever had a dip in frame rate, not have the graphics ever been unclear. Something like Killzone: Shadow Fall has amazing graphics, pretty good frame rate, but restricts you to ultra narrow corridors with fancy skyboxes. In top of that, it's one of two games that have ever caused my PS4's fans to kick into high gear. I find such corridor gameplay someone detrimental, but it is common for most shooters these days. Metal Gear Solid 5 managed to make us think 60fps at 1080p was possible across all platforms. But most people failed to notice the very plain and sometimes low res textures on almost everything but the character model. It was a game that aimed more at gameplay than graphics. In my opinion, I think it nailed it where it counted though. What bugs me is games that focus on frame rate over everything. Various indies are the biggest offenders lately. I've played a few using the unreal engine that just felt and looked all wrong despite have stellar frame rates. As for the argument about 24-30 (29.95) FPS. We have been watching movies in 24 FPS most of our lives and TV has been 30 FPS for the most part as well. 60+ FPS is almost exclusive to games on PC (and some older generation consoles). The vast majority of casual gamers and non gamers do see 60+ FPS as a sort of oddity. 30 FPS is generally viewed as "live" or looking like a soap opera, which is why most movies have stayed with 24 FPS. People are just accustomed to certain frame rates for certain media. My only real gripe with 60+ FPS games is a weird inconsistency with frame rate vs. what I'm actually seeing. Often times I've noticed that foreground objects and animations are amazingly fluid, yet background objects strobe across the screen when I turn the camera quickly. Which feels entirely disingenuous when it comes to actual frame rate... Or perhaps that's less about frame rate and more about the render rate of objects that are moving further in comparison to closer objects? I dunno though, that's all my personal observation. The only other thing that rubs me the wrong way is retro graphics. Maybe it's because I was there the first time around? All these fancy games coming out that are emulating the 8 and 16-bit style just feel pretty dated to me. Despite many of them having great gameplay. And now that I've ranted and probably gone off topic a few times, I'll stop here.

                • I would settle for 720p at 60fps, I wish we had those options on consoles.
