Combination of Connections Determines Your Skills and K/D's

I am playing Destiny's PvP for about 30 days now (720 hours). Before i have played CoD for 10 years almost every day. I have put a lot of my time in researching lag/ latency lag and different internet connections. At home, i have 4 different internet connections: 1. 150Mbit download, 30Mbit upload, CAT6 cable, speedtest Ping 11ms, 0 packet loss. (With this connection my average k/d is 0.4 and i am mostly just a practising target, where i see enemies much too late and my bullets not doing any damage. Unbelievable Latency Lag). 2. Wireless from the connection above 20Mbits Dwn, 10 Up, 100% reception. (with this connection sometimes i can play normally and get k/d's above 2) 3. Wireless from the same connection above, but with a Wi-Fi range extender on the first floor of my house. Wi-Fi reception about 70%. 10 Mbit Dwnl, 5 Mbit upl. (with this connection on some days good, on some days bad) 4. My neighbours Wi-Fi (different ISP) 9Mbit download, 3Mbit upload. (with this connection mostly i have k/d's above 2. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The most matches in Crimson Doubles i have played with a friend which i have refered-as-a-friend and he played Destiny's PvP for the first time. We have won like 60% of all matches and i had an average k/d of 1.4 with him. He has the same ISP like me. I have also played Crimson Doubles with the other friends and mostly couldn't get a kill. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yesterday, a friend which has an average k/d of 1.9 has been playing at my house. Not even one match he could get k/d above 0.5. My average k/d was 1.4. At his house i get k/d's above 3, regullary. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My son visited his nephew, which normally plays GTA and has played Destiny for 2 weeks. His skills are very low. They played Iron Banner this weekend. Their average k/d was above 2. My son said it was ridicolous. His nephew without skills, crouching and moving like an old woman got k/d's above 2. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This weekend i have played Trials with German friends. One has 1.5Mbit internet and the other has 5MBit internet. Their ELO is 1650 and 1800. On my best wired internet connection i couldn't get a kill and we lost every third match. Then i changed my internet to my neighbours internet. The first ticket we went flawless and i mostly had very high k/d's. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My conclusion is that Destiny's PvP/ Your Skills/ K/D depend on the combination of internet connections, who you are playing with or against. The Latency Lag Decides your skills on Destiny's PvP. When you are on the good side of this lag, you notice nothing and it seems that you are simply better. These players can improve their skills, because the game lets them. The players on the other side of the connection don't make a chance, no matter how good they are. They simply see you too late on their screen. I think that dedicated servers would solve 90% of these problems. Just make the game fair for everybody.

  • Yo! I thought i was crazy but this is often what i am thinking. Im not the best but their is no way i am as bad as my k/d says i am. I swear, there are times when i thought i was team shot because i died almost instantly but then i can tell that the enemies saw me first and all their shots registered at once. Also, when battling snipers before the recent nerf to mida i would tag them 2-4 times and still get headshot almost instantly on a consistent basis which obviously means they had shot me before i shot them but it didnt register. My connection is wired and i have great speeds and i am never red bar unless for some reason the whole game is lagging. I almost believe they dont allow local multiplayer so that you cant see how the game would feel on an even playing field.

  • I've been keep a fairly consistent 2.0kd, sometimes I do better and sometimes I do worse, but it's not based on my connection. The only time my connection affects me is when I die them the guy that killed me dies, and there's nothing you can do about that

Ive been telling this to people from the beginning. ... Most try hard losers who claim they are DESTINY GODS coz of KD are nothing but SCRUBS ! Thanks for proofing my point partially, give me a week with destiny stats from server play P2P and Ill crack this game up so hard no player will ever dare say they have skill in this game in PVP P2P matchmaking Its a JOKE !

      • Yep. I have gone though this latency thing when I was putting many many hours into the Battlefield franchise. And if you are from another country than Bungievisions ivory skyscraper in the US, where they piggyback upon the P2P connection and supervise (and add lag to) the gameplay via their servers in Washington, than you are shit out of luck with your Crucible experience. I have hours of footage of countless WTF moments within Crucible. Moments that are utterly ridiculous and are nothing short of embarrassing with a $500mil. AAA title such as Destiny. After a while you simply learn it will never get better and you can't help but lose interest in the franchise. Dedicated servers are the single deciding factor on if I spend money with this company with their future releases. I am somewhat confident that I already know the answer.

          • I've always felt something is wrong with PvP, like some games I'm a couple frames ahead and others games the opposite, like every enemy I encounter is pre firing for a head shot before I can even pull my weapon.

              • Sadly there is NOTHING you can do yourself to "improve" your PvP experience because YOUR overall connection to the lobby changes EVERY GAME. I have decent internet (Hardwired through a Gigabit AC router with an average 55/4.5, 0 packet loss and 20ms latency BEFORE connection to Destiny PvP). As soon as I get into a Destiny PvP lobby I look as my indicator sometimes goes from green to red I check to find a 80-120ms latency. Been in matches where no one is green. Usually find a global mishmash of players in the lobby. Well, welcome to P2P networking folks. Because of that, NOTHING in Destiny's PvP is remotely "competitive".

I have pretty poor experiences in destiny which I think is thanks to SBMM so every kill I get is delayed, people shoot me with snipers through walls and they continue to shoot at me for about 4 seconds after they are dead however I can maintain a good kd despite that so I disagree that it dictates your kd however it does make it a lot lower than what it should be, especially when you don't normally die frequently. I've only once received a message telling me I was lagging before as well and that was from someone who was lagging for me before I'm attacked by anyone for being god mode.

Good info! My friends and I have experienced the same when we hop on at each other's houses. I also notice three distinctly different connections between playing at my house, my gf's house, and my parent's house. Luckily my own house isn't the lowest connection, but unfortunately isn't the best of the three. I was playing daily (sometimes quite a few hours), but since I saw how my connection differs so much depending on my location, I'm losing interest. It's just not fun when you really don't know how you compare connection-wise to your opponents. Is a previous 9.0k/d match something to be proud of when (unbeknownst to you) you're in God-mode and all your opponents see you as a lagging asshole? Is it fair to come down so hard on myself because, even though I tried my ass off and am sitting in a pool of sweat, I can't break a 0.6k/d over the course of 5 matches? It's all of this that has made me back away from a game that I absolutely love the feel of as well as the gameplay and visuals. I left for a week or so to play the division with my friends and it was the biggest reality check I've had with this game. In my week away, I realized how BS this p2p laggy mess of a PvP experience is. There is no excitement (for me t least) to play when "skill" takes a back seat to "chance". PvP in this game is essentially a lag gamble every time you connect.
Please don't take any of what I wrote as "hate" or "salt". I've never enjoyed a game so much as Destiny and love how they've captured the gun-play I could only dream about about for years (and I do mean years because I remember getting hooked on fps games back in the years of Quake and Unreal). I'm also not a Dividiot as I enjoy that game only as something to fill the time till they figure out the mess this game is stuck in. This game can only improve as more people know about posts like this one (thx OP!), and more people express their dissatisfaction.
• I'll test this tonight. Instead of connecting via cable, I'll use WiFi. Let's see if there's any difference.

                        • Connection does determine your skill level to an extent. In fact, you will notice that players have the highest stats where the average internet connection is best and where the largest player base exists. Hence you will notice the players with the best stats comes from one of the places : America Canada Europe Are they the best players in the world.. probably not...they may be right up there but they just enjoy the least amount of lag.

                        • So much this. This is the only game I've played where lag is basically a god mode. Most other games you lag everything freezes and you can't do shit. Ask yourself have you in any other game traded kills as much as you have in Destiny?

                          • Connection does play a role in how certain scenarios will play out during a game, without a doubt, but I believe it's an exaggeration to say it determines your skill.

                          • Until this game gets dedicated servers (which will never happen because Activision lives under a rock and doesn't know dedicated servers exist) there will never be any indication of someone's true skill. You have red bar players who are total garbage going around dominating people because they have a poor connection and it benefits them. The "damage referee" seems to work exactly the opposite of how it should. I can't do damage to red bar players but they have no problem killing me. When point blank shotguns, melee attacks and sniper headshots don't register on people, I check the roster and see it's almost always a red bar player or someone who's in a fireteam with a red bar player. All it takes is one guy in a team with a red bar and they ALL lag.

                            • Yep, I would agree with you. On average I'd say that 50% of my games are played with less then optimal connection resulting in more deaths and a lower K/D.

                            • I don't think anyone quite understands how your connection speed and ping actually work. Your speed is how much information it can send at once. Ping is the actual time it takes for each packet of information to leave your system, hit destiny, and then return. So as long as your speed handles the requirements, which is relatively low, then it doesn't matter. 5mbps vs 100mbps means nothing in online gaming. 20 ping vs 120 ping however will absolutely make an impact.
