Why care about light level?

Why do people care about light when doing Raids/Trials etc.. All I see is "301+ light to join". Why? If you have a high enough level (35+) with some exotics and good weaponry; why should your light count as you being a good player? I get that "the more light you have, the better the armor" but why should your light level prevent you from teaming up with people? P.S: Just curious as to why this is a factor when playing. I just returned after almost a year of inactivity. So post seriously please? No flame. READ BEFORE COMMENTING: Since some people have something stupid to say about me being new or being a "noob" or shelfing this game;no. I deployed and have been gone for almost a year. Now that I am stateside, I want to catch up. U.S Army 31B 11th Battalion Military Police EDIT: Thanks for the responses guys. I found out what I needed to know and then some. I thank everyone that took their time to reply with an answer that wasn't negative. Good day guardians!

  • The difference between your Light and your enemy's affects how much damage you deal to each other. If you are lower than your enemy, you deal less damage and take more, and vice versa. The attack value of your weapon also increases damage dealt, so a light 300 character with a Primary attack value of 290 does less damage than a character of the same light with a Primary attack value of 300. Why they think Light correlates to actual skill is beyond me, since Light on equipment drops is randomized, but there you have it. A lot of dumb people doesn't make them right, it just means the status quo is idiocy.

    • The huger light you have the more damage you do and the less you take. It doesn't matter if you have good weapons. Let's say your 300 light. Compare that to a 310 or higher. Their dps is gonna be much higher than the 300's. That's why people prefer to have the hugest light they can get

          • You do realize that your light determines your damage right? And at a certain deficit you won't even be able to damage the enemies. Of course lights important. Light gives you the ability to attempt the endgame.

          • 290 Lock 314 Hunter 312 Titan Pretty much only play pvp, where light doesn't really matter after 300. 4/6 of my usual raid Fireteam left to go play Fallout exclusively. Stopped trying to mash together a bunch of random idiots to raid with a while ago.

          • People are really pissy about raids, they want a quick run with little to no mistakes and get frustrated really easily, because of this the raid host has the fear of a group falling apart so to prevent that he'll try to ensure victory by specifically asking for higher levels and people with experience

If you're level 36 or 35, you have to be atleast level 40 to get into the raid. Also, thanks for your service.

As stated, the higher the level, the higher the damage you can take and dish out. Many also look at the higher level and gauge whether the player will struggle to get through. Since many want to get things done quickly, they ask for higher level and assume they will be the better more experienced player. If you are on ps4 and need someone to run around with, let me know. Have plenty of other friends who could run stuff with you as well. Gmsieb

                • Do you hear yourself? Raids trials have a recommended light for a reason. And ya you could be a great player at 34 wo ttk but it's irrelevant in this case.

It's all about dps my friend.. Putting enough damage on a boss in a certain amount of time.. Doesn't matter how good are, if you are a low light level then you are doing less damage to enemies that are higher than you.. Take oryx hard for example.. The enemies level appears in red.. Once you reach 311, that goes away and it turns to normal color.. I believe the scale is for every 10 light you are lower than an ememy, you are inflicting 15% less damage than any other person who is higher ranked or even with said enemy.. It's not discrimination, it's about proper execution and damage output to finish a boss off in time. Hope this helps you. Edit- Thank you very much for your service to protect our country.

                    • If you've played any MMOs like WoW or FF14 recently, light level is quite similar to item or gear level. It's just an avg of your attack and defense levels across your character. In this case, since we have 10 slots, an increase of ten light across your gear slots will increase your avg by 1. Light level still determines your capabilities against enemies in a given combat scenario. Light level still directly determines ability damage like before but is more specific. 10 light above or below a given recommendation is about right. You must be at most 20 light (I think... Anyone confirm again?) below a requirement to participate.

                      • I don't. Just gotta be 300 or above really. Bungie released a graph awhile ago showing that it took like a 20 light level difference to notice the tiniest difference. This was for pvp..probably still out there archived somewhere..

The only reason your saying this is because you are a level 34.
