Who We Were: The Vault of Glass

(We find ourselves in the middle of a warlock gathering about ten years ago) Five warlocks, four apprentices and the master, gathered at the north side of the Tower. "Dakota, Clara, come on! I think we finally convinced Master Jal!" shouted Isaiah as he shoved Dakota's shoulder running by. Dakota scowled. "Alright! Give us a minute!" He looked back to Clara, a sunsinger and a member of his raid team. "So, once we get back from Venus, want to go get a drink and dinner?" Clara smiled as she pulled her hair behind her ear. "I would love to. I heard the moon is full tonight." She whispered slightly into Dakota's ear. Dakota leaned in for a kiss, but Isaiah grabbed his arm and dragged him back. "Let's go!" Dakota sighed as he followed Isaiah. Clara giggled and caught up. "What do we got?" Dakota looked to his team: Master Jal, himself, Clara, Isaiah, and Brian; two sunsingers, the rest voidwalkers. Brian spoke up as he held a holographic map of a very iconic gate. "Master, I think we all are ready!" No one spoke. "The Vault of Glass? We have lost several guardians to that Vex trap!" Master Jal was wary of how dangerous it was, and he had no plans to take his students down. "With all due respect, we will play smarter. We will play strategic, not carelessness." Brian was known to be a little cocky. "You think the Vault is a game?! A challenge to beat and move on?! Kabr's team was lost to that vault." Master Jal snapped. Brian shied back, but Clara stepped forward. "May the Traveler help us succeed where they failed. And may us succeed in their honor." Dakota stepped up beside her. "Please. There is no telling what the Vex are doing down there. Another day debating about this is one step closer to completing their plan." Master Jal looked to all his eager students. "... For Kabr's team." His pupils cheered. "For Kabr!" "Now, what do we got here?" said a familiar voice walking down the stairs of the hanger. The team of warlocks froze and looked to see who it was. Master Jal sighed. "Cayde! Oh, thank God it isn't Ikora." Master Jal looked to his students, then back to Cayde-6. "An unsanctioned Op that requires breaking into a Vex stronghold?" "Why haven't I used that on Zavala?" Cayde-6 stared into space. "Anyway! Stay safe." He walked off as calmly as he walked in. Master Jal shrugged his shoulders and continued to pack equipment into his ship. The five ships launched into orbit when a call came over the radios. "Guardians! I did not give you authorization for that launch!" shouted Commander Zavala. "Don't worry! I did." stated Cayde-6. "That is more reason to worry! Master Jal, I want a full report when you get back!" demanded Commander Zavala. "Of course, Sir." Master Jal was serious, but the other four warlocks were laughing. The five warlocks landed outside the Vault, but they were beat to the challenge. They walked to the front gate to see a pathetic site of a hunter trying to get in. He was still standing because he was leaning against the gate. "Let.. me.. in! Let.. me.. in!" The hunter repeatedly knifed the gate, maybe he could get in. The warlocks looked at each other. "Would be a hunter." said Dakota jokingly. "Dakota!" Clara slapped his chest, but she laughed too. "Hunter! Do you need some help?" asked Master Jal. The hunter stumbled as he looked to the team. "If.. if you think.. you're smart enough to get it open." Isaiah looked to Dakota. "That's just offensive!" "Come on, we need a sixth." said Dakota as he motioned to come forth. The hunter slowly walked over then collapsed. The warlocks looked at each other for ideas. "We can shoot him, put him out of his misery and revive him in a healthy state." Brian pulled out his hand cannon and aimed. "What!? No!... actually go ahead." Master Jal saw where he was getting at. Bang! After a moment, the hunter stood up. "You shot me!" Brian hid his weapon behind him. "No matter! See this plate, there are two others. We need two people on each spot." Master Jal pointed to the plate behind them. Everyone split up and went to different plates. "What's your name, hunter?" asked Dakota as they, two, shot incoming Vex. "Daniels. People call me Daniels." answered the hunter as he reloaded his scout rifle. Master Jal spoke over the comms. "Check it out! A spire is forming! Keep it up!" All three teams were doing good, but Dakota and Daniels got tossed away from their plate by a minotaur! The spire slowly retracted. "No! No! No!" Dakota helped the hunter up and destroyed the Vex warrior. They got back on the plate and the spire continued to form! The Vex were relentless! Wave after wave after wave! No matter the number, the three sub teams held their plate! The spire had fully formed and a beam of light shot out towards the gate! Dakota and Daniels looked at each other then ran up the slope to the gate. The teams converged and watched the gate open! They were a step closer to killing Atheon. Master Jal, with his pulse rifle, led the way. Brian and Isaiah followed. Daniels put up his knife and patted Dakota on the shoulder. Dakota nodded in respect. Clara started to walk in but Dakota grabbed her arm. "Clara, whatever is down there, be careful. You are not going to be another guardian lost to the Vex." "Oh, honey. I'm a sunsinger, plus I know what I'm doing. You need to make sure you don't have to waste your radiance." Clara rubbed Dakota's visor then walked in. Dakota made sure no one followed and entered. Slowly the gate closed behind them.
Thank you so much for reading! Part two will be out shortly.
