I found a very interesting new public event type thing that kinda blew my mind! It was in the Citadel area. My NoNoBot suddenly started telling me he'd detected a strange signal. I had to run around & find areas where the signal strength was at it's clearest. Once found I got an encrypted message.
This happened three times. The first time I had to kill enemies to decrypt the message which told me to kill Vex with precision damage & gave me a completion percentage. Once done I had to hunt the signal again until I got the next encrypted mission parameter. This time killing enemies didn't do anything. I had to open chests & collect materials again with a percentage. The third & final encrypted mission was to kill majors & ultras. Once done NoNoBot announced that he now understood the message but didn't know where it had come from.
It's my belief that this is a treasure hunt, something that was mentioned as being planned for inclusion in the Dark Below DLC. Here's my theory, there is one of these signal hunting missions on each planet & once you have completed them all you will get the coordinates to the source of the signals & obtain a unique item. There may even be some reward for completing each stage once TTK drops but I didn't receive anything on this occasion. I guess we'll find out in a few days time. Please let me know if anyone else has found one of these signal hunting missions anywhere else.
Edit 1:
Looks like my theory was partly right so far & these events have been reported on all the planets. No idea yet if the locations are random or fixed or if there's a reward for completing them all but I'll certainly update as more info becomes available.
Edit 2:
Redacted.
Edit 3:
Huge thanks to everyone who has contributed toward figuring this out. I redacted the second edit because it seemed a bit pointless given the information we've been getting. Namely that it doesn't seem to matter where you are when these signals come through. It's more based on your activities. As long as you're patrolling, doing patrol missions & public events you should trigger one eventually.
I spent over an hour with one of my clan mates yesterday patrolling the Cosmodrome without any luck & I spent about an hour before that patrolling on Mars & nothing happened there either. So far all I've found is that first one on Venus. I just love the randomness of it! It's so much fun & if possible it's got me even more excited for The Taken King to drop. I feel like a kid again counting down the last couple of days before Xmas & I love that Bungie has given us this week to have a really good peek at our presents. I guess this makes tomorrow Destin-Eve! ;)
Edit 4:
I finally got the Cosmodrome one to drop! Huge thanks to SooperSmurph for posting the link to their guide which lists all the different mission parameters along with hints & tips on how to start the mission. You'll find it here:

Just did one on earth, had to dance as the final part lol

Did one on Venus, mine started in the Ishtar cliffs though

Edited by iMoto Bro: 9/13/2015 11:40:48 AMI've done two of them. Mars & the Moon. I did one of those new patrol missions with the blue pillars of light/energy coming from the ground and immediately afterwards the "mystery patrol" mission started so I initially thought they were connected in some way. I guess they're not part of the same event though.

I got mine in the hell mouth. Had just finished a scan and started receiving the message.

Had one yesterday in The Divide area in Cosmodrome. They are little random riddle missions. It was broken down in three parts: 1) Precision kills of enemies 2) Collection of upgrade material 3) Collection of dropped material from enemies My ghost then proceeded to say something among the lines of, "Can this be a message from... No probably not."
-
Similar thing happened to me at The Steppes in the Cosmodrome.
-
I got one on mars
-
"The walking gem is near" I got this in the chat box when I was speeding past the VoG section into the Citadel. Is it the same thing? Didn't do anything about it though.

Edited by MStone02: 9/13/2015 8:12:40 AMHad a fireteam on venus at ishtar cliffs. & we got the same hang-man bounties. First was precision kills, second was to Dance, & 3rd was collecting materials.

My encrypted signal told me to dance as the final stage

I got one of these in the cosmodrome today in the divide. First was kill enemies second was collect materials and third stage was express feelings (dance) pretty cool new quests

I just finished one on earth in the Mothyards. I'm not sure when I obtained the mission. I picked up a patrol for kill any enemies and then I was just jumping around on the wrecked planes at the back closest to the ocean for no other reason than to check out the scenery and then out of nowhere I noticed the patrol mission with a bunch of questions marks. After fooling around a bit I ended up solving the puzzle. It just made me do a few random commands ending with precision kills. Afterwards, ghost said something along the lines of 'wait, is that the signal from...' I didnt notice any rep gains though, may just not have paid attention. Its definitely interesting though and Bungie usually has something up their sleeve and loves riddles. I love secret stuff and I don't think there was enough of it in year 1. Even if it turned out to be noting more than a cool little game, I would still enjoy the hunt.
