a horrifying new era

but alas those days are gone. thown aside like some old toy. they will one day anounce that gaming is trendy, some benifits will arise. like the surplus of /\/00b kills, but the side effects will be that gaming will have lost it's hardcore-ness, it's verry spirit. you can see the beguining of this horrifying transition. the recent popularity of "old school" game t-shirts. when the wearer's of theese t-shirts are barely new school. next time you see a jock walk down the campus with a "old school" t-shirt with a nintendo controler on the front. gaming will no longer be a subculture of the nerds. it will be thrown out of it's home into the bright lights of comersialism (i can't spell). i know i'm ranting but this is what i'm seeing. it makes me sad. but these day wont be totaly horrible. the PC gaming scene will hopefully never lose it's (insert fancy frech word here). i hope.

  • yeah but that's been happening since the release of the PS1. do you remember those commercials? In a way it sucks but in a way it doesn't. It is true that gaming doesn't really feel like it is "ours" anymore, but there are particular games that slip under the radar of the mass public that can create a kind of "sub-identity". Mostly coming to mind right now are Dreamcast games. But for alot of games that are good enough to deserve a loyal following there will always be the element of special interest that separates true appreciation from trendiness. Shenmue is probably the best example i can think of for this. Also think of the way JSRF and Skies of Arcadia: Legends bombed (though Skies of Arcadia bombed on both of its systems, which is a shame) and you'll see what i mean. Wonderful games but they just aren't called Final Fantasy or Tony Hawk. My larger concern with the future of gaming is pushing aside the single-player experience for massive multiplayer games. Not just in a single game, as some people would say was done with Halo 2, but for the gaming world as a whole. Like there would be no quality single-player games being made. Also, hold off on the pessimism until you see what Nintendo is doing with their next system. i really have a good feeling about it. [Edited on 2/23/2005 10:49:16 PM]
