The original CE suffers from frame rate drop? WTF. Are you sure you're not on Anniversary?
Actually, Halo 1 does suffer from framerate drop on native hardware. Probably more than Anniversary does, though Anniversary drops frames so ungracefully that I prefer the original game's performance as a whole. The only spot which is decidedly in CEA's favour performance-wise is the Maw run, which functions like an absolute joke in a few places on the original Xbox.
I'm always baffled when people claim that the original Halo runs silky smooth. It's commonly claimed, but totally false.
I think maybe people remember it like that because it feels pretty good due to usually running fine and never doing things like going into perpetual judder mode (unlike CEA and Halo 3, ugh).
Well I was under the impression that it only lagged when there were high AI numbers. Plus, I've only played the Xbox version on the Xbox 360 so that could be why.
But yeah, it feels way better than CEA and H3. That could also be why. H3's Sierra 117's dam has 2 big problems.
1. The Pelican. Magic missiles are ungodly assistance, even more so when they fire carelessly.
2. The Phantom that often collides with the bridge. The lag produced is immense.
