Any reason Super Smash Bros. for Gamecube is so freaking expensive right now?

Seriously, I'm only finding prices $50 and up just to buy a used copy. It's not like it's a rare game like Earthbound or something, nor is it that old of a game as well. Anyone know what the deal is with that?

  • Melee is still a highly demand game due to its continuing popularity at various Smash Bros tournaments and its widely considered the best selling GameCube game in its entire console lifecycle. Lucky for me, I got my copy of Melee for 15 bucks at a local GameStop years ago before they discontinued selling GameCube games.

  • If it was earth bond though. It would be even more expensive. And idk. Maybe because no new copies being made. And it was a really good game. That could be why it's so expensive.

  • I found a friend who didn't play it anymore, got a GameCube, controller, memory card, and about 12 games (including smash bros and double dash) for $40. But basically, it's good and it's old so it's expensive. You're best bet might be finding out if someone you know has a copy and doesn't play it.

  • It's kinda old, and it's so good that nobody wants to sell it. I'm glad I got it 10 years ago.

  • They don't manufacture those discs anymore, and there probably hasn't been any new copies released in over 10 years. Not to mention smash bros has a huge competitive and casual following so most physical copies are hard to come by at a cheap price.

      • Still have my copy and it works. Every few months I pop it in for a minute. Impossible to believe that was over a decade ago.

        • The game is quite popular still, so there's still the demand, but limited supply. I would suggest just getting an ISO. To my knowledge, Nintendo doesn't sell Melee in any format currently, so it's not like they're getting your money one way or another.

        • Gamecube the sometimes under rated console with plenty of amazing games and only system to utilize mini DVDs that were never used again for any other console.

        • Some first party Nintendo games do not lose their value, I don't have a Wii or Wii U but I think you can get a lot of the classic games via Nintendo's virtual store, you might be able to get it that way. If you are after the original for the Gamecube you will have to pay for it. I disagree with ROMs like you and physical is always better.

It's 14 or so years old and people still play it religiously. Smash 64 is still a similar price for a similar reason. Edit: if you're not hell bent on getting Melee, check out Project M. It's a mod of Brawl made to feel like Melee. It'll be cheaper to get a Brawl disc if you have a Wii than it will be to find a Melee disc for your GameCube. I like it because it has a lot more characters than Melee (it even adds Mewtwo and Roy from Melee back in). It also adds some new gamemodes, new costumes, new/better stages, and reworks a lot of Brawl characters' movesets.

            • Because geek is chic, and owners are cashing in on the trend of hipsters ironically playing "retro" consoles. Frankly, you're better off getting a backwards compatible wii and modding it. Not as though downloading an iso is any different than buying second hand.
