Destiny

Discuss all things Destiny.

What is the appeal of Destiny?

Seriously, let me give you a scenario I'm dealing with. I'm currently in the middle of The Last of Us(which I just got my PS4 and had never played TLOU before), Telltale's Game of Thrones, a bunch of other PS4 games I've never played, and a bunch of stuff in my XB1 library, but for some goddamn reason I only feel like playing Destiny and I don't know why. I mean, Destiny is repetitive(like, really repetitive), it had an awful plot, and there's not a lot of content, but for all that the gameplay is smoother than butter. Why is it that I decide to keep playing Destiny after around 500 hours instead of The Last of Us, Game of Thrones, or anything else? Let's not focus on all of Destiny's problems in this thread, we're all perfectly aware of them and acknowledge them to their fullest effect(On paper, Destiny sucks). Instead, let's take some time to discuss why we keep booting this game up instead of playing something else(unless you don't play Destiny anymore, in which case I imagine this thread would be somewhat irrelevant to you). Personally, I think it's 50/50 on character progression and something akin to gambling. Character progression is pretty simple, whenever I don't play Destiny, I feel like I'm legitimately falling behind on something because of my decision to play something else. There's always something to grind, some seemingly close but attainable goal that I know I can reach with a little bit of time. As for the gambling bit, we all know our good friend RNGesus and his sidekick, Master Rahool. It occasionally throws us a shiny new piece of gear our way, and for some reason the idea that I might get something awesome from the Nightfall or a raid or whatever gets me to log on and roll the dice every week. Also, everyone on my friends list plays Destiny. Destiny is still played by more people on my friends list than anything else, including GTAV, the MCC, COD AW, what have you? This a small minority of people, and it's probably not an accurate sampling for the rest of the community, but why does Destiny hold their attention, and mine, longer than any of those other games do? I can safely say that collectively they play a part in me coming back to Destiny all the time, and that I provide a small contribution to a larger but identical reason that they come back to Destiny as well.

 • For me , honestly, it's paying with my crew. I have a friend that I've played several games with (online) for almost ten years now. Then, about two weeks into playing Destiny, I met several really cool people while playing. I now communicate with these dudes through the smart glass app. And anytime we're on we just have a blast. The good times we have is what keeps me coming back. We all raid together, do the weekly missions together and run bounties together. We've done it all over and over but it's just the connection we all have that makes it enjoyable. We are going to start branching out to other games though (eventually).
