What's With the Red Death Love?

So I got this from a raid and it was like, "meh." It's a pulse rifle. It looks super cool, maybe fun for using on ROC or patrol. At this point I could use a slingshot just to mix things up. Using that as my exotic as opposed to the many other superior (?) exotics, doesn't seem likely. So the question is this: Is it actually a good gun or does it simply fill a niche for hard mode raiders? I haven't leveled it, but this seems like another Gjellyhorn gun. A few people that legit need it say they want it. Shortly thereafter, the entire community freaks out because they want it. The. Xur sells it and everyone's heads explode because it was unearned.

As a Red Death owner, I can say that the weapon has high points and low points. The big money is obviously in the guaranteed heals and faster reload speeds when you land a kill. This makes it a very useful tool in Crota's End. However, since Bungie can't balance a seesaw to save their lives, they decided to NERF the Red Death's damage in exchange for a slightly higher RoF, which made absolutely zero sense. In the end, the RD just fails to bring the satisfying stopping power seen in other exotics like the Vex, Suros, Hawkmoon, Thorn, etc. If you use it as a self-healing machine and leave the heavy duty work to your specials/heavies, you'll be satisfied. If you pick up a Red Death expecting it to mercilessly bulldoze through majors and ultras like other exotics, you may be a little disappointed.

  • It turns you into Wolverine. Per kill you get healed so in something like hard mode Crota it's a godsend, that's assuming you can't heal in other ways. Some exotic helmets heal you per orb pick up and if Crota is like VoG the raid gear probably has a chance to spawn orbs perk that's based per precision kill or per melee kill.

  • Because after getting the pulse rifle grimoire with the bad juju, I want to try the red death!! It looks as sounds epic and the only other legendary that gets close to the juju is the Oversoul edict.. Now that gun is brilliant!

    • Basically it helps during Crota since you don't regen health and the perk on it heals you with every kill.
